Mt Stapylton at 0343UTCshowing what appears to be extremely vigorous rotationin the mid levels (~5.5 km ASL, gate to gate shear ~ 75 m/s).This storm produced 6-8cm hail near Esk (shown to the SW) and a "100m wide swathe of destruction through Woodforde" ("WOO" to the NE).

ABC news Thursday 9/11/2006 - SE Qld cleans up after stormsA major clean-up is under way this morning after the severe storms that battered south-east Queensland yesterday afternoon. State Emergency Service (SES) crews worked .through the night to repair damage to homes on the Gold Coast, Caboolture, the .Sunshine Coast and at Esk, north-west of Brisbane. Last night another line of storms moved through an area between Rockhampton and the Town of 1770.At the Gold Coast a woman was treated in hospital after an apparent lightning strike. At the height of the storms, power was cut to around 40,000 homes, mainly on the Gold and Sunshine coasts. The SES says the extent of the damage should become clearer this morning.Sarah Oppenheim from the SES says despite the property damage there have been few injuries."As far as I know there haven't been too many injuries, aside from the woman who was hit by lightning on the Gold Coast," she said."Hopefully that will remain as it is, with no other injuries sustained by people."

Courier Mail Thursday 9/11/2006A GOLD Coast woman was struck by lightning, more than 22,000 homes were blacked out and afternoon traffic thrown into chaos as two bands of storms swept across southeast Queensland yesterday.Apart from scattered showers, the storms bypassed Brisbane, which only received 3.6mm of rain as fronts battered the south and north coasts. Darling Downs farmers were leaping for joy as heavy rain soaked their paddocks for a second day in a row, although dams in the Brisbane region again largely missed out.In the most serious incident, a Gold Coast woman, 35, was rushed to hospital after apparently being hit by lightning at her Carrara home at 3.30pm.Hail hammered Springbrook in the Gold Coast Hinterland, farm communities west of Toowoomba, Esk in the Brisbane Valley and parts of the Sunshine Coast.Severe thunderstorms, strong winds and hail also caused damage across the Woodford-Kilcoy area, unroofing at least one home and bringing down power lines and trees. Energex and Ergon said more than 63,000 customers lost power from Roma to the coastal strip, most for less than an hour, triggering chaos on the Gold Coast after traffic lights went out at eight major intersections. About half of the outages were in the Hervey Bay area, which lost power at 6pm.The State Emergency Service reported more than 30 calls from residents.A storm cell ripped a 100m-wide swathe of destruction through Woodford, north of Brisbane, early in the afternoon. It shredded the roof of Woodford couple Jessica and John Hallinan's partly renovated home, tossing furniture around like toys. When it was over, a couch and other furniture which once graced the living room were resting on the verandah, debris was scattered across the garden and almost everything they had worked for was ruined by heavy rain. "I was in town when the storm hit . . . and when I got home it was all gone," a distraught Mrs Hallinan said.

DEVASTATED ... Woodford couple Jessica and John Hallinan lost the roof off their home in Stoney Creek Road.
