    Theft at landscaping companyPolice are appealing for witnesses following the theft of equipment from a landscaping company in Norton Drive, Melton. The premises were entered between Friday night and early Saturday morning of November 14-15. Anyone with information can call CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.

    Two arrested for assaultPolice have arrested two people following an alleged assault on a 25-year-old man at his West Melton address. Police say a 27-year-old Kingsville man and a 32-year-old Sunshine man allegedly attacked the man before taking him to an ATM and forcing him to withdraw cash. The two men have been remanded in custody and will appear at Sunshine Magistrates Court at a later date.

    Lock up or lose itPolice are urging all drivers to lock up or lose it following continuing thefts from cars. On Friday, November 14, offenders smashed windows of parked cars at the Diggers Rest railway station before stealing low-value items. In an unrelated incident, offenders targeted cars parked in driveways in Melton.

    Primary teacher pledgeA re-elected Coalition government will train 200 primary school teachers to become specialists in maths and science. Premier Denis Napthine announced a $26 million package to cover specialist training and staffing costs last week.

    School is almost over for the year, but thats no reason to put down the books.

    Avid readers are being encouraged by Moorabool Shire Council to keep reading and take part in a Summer Reading Club challenge these school holidays.

    The national challenge encourages students of all ages to read through the summer holidays and win prizes along the way.

    The theme for this summers challenge is adventure, with young readers gearing up for adventure through the pages of their books.

    Students need to read 10 books to go into the draw for the major prize of a Nintendo 3DS XL, with a maximum of 10 entries per person.

    The preschool prize is a Leapfrog Leap Pad Ultra: the primary prize is a $100 National Geographic gift pack and the secondary prize a

    $150 Collins Book Store voucher. Registrations will open on December 1 and readers can register for the challenge for free through any of the Moorabool libraries.

    The program will end on Friday, January 16.Participants who register at a Moorabool

    library will receive a Summer Reading Club pack that includes stickers, temporary tattoos, wrist bands and bookmarks.

    Registrations can also be done online at www.summerreadingclub.org.au.

    More prizes are also up for grabs for those who take part in the online writing activities.

    The burnt out remains of the Diggers Rest hotel will continue to crumble, following the withdrawal of an application to demolish it.

    The hotel, which was destroyed by fire on October 30, 2008, has been the subject of debate for the past six years.

    A planning application to demolish the remains was lodged back in December 2008 and a decision was expected at last weeks council meeting.

    But the applicant, hotel owner Diggers Rest Properties Pty. Ltd, withdrew the application.

    The council had received three objections and 64 joint letters supporting the demolition of the hotel.

    Diggers Rest resident Kim Davis said a decision needed to be made immediately.

    Within six years, a decision should have been made, Ms Davis said.

    It should ultimately be demolished and [the land] put to better use.

    Mel Tyquin, also a Diggers Rest resident, said shed like to see a pub re-established on the site but the ruins must go immediately.

    You cant just leave it like this, she said. You look at [the ruins] and you feel sad; you dont feel any pride. Its not serving a purpose and its one of the first things people see when they enter our town.

    Diggers Rest Properties Pty Ltd owner Roger Smith was not available for comment.

    The 24-year-old witnessed first-hand the devastating effects of financial hardship and vowed to help others in desperate need.

    struggles when he was a child, Mr Wong quickly grasped the value and importance of money. He is now a wealth manager in Melton for money management company Yellow Brick Road and has just won the companys rising star award.

    I appreciated the value of money because of my parents. Knowing when to spend and when to save was the key part, he said.

    Mr Wong said the biggest mistake people made was spending as they go.

    He encouraged everyone to dedicate 30 minutes a week to sorting out their finances.

    Its really just making minor tweaks and understanding how much youre spending, he said. Were not here to tell people what they can and cant spend money on. But we can figure out whether its worthwhile spending on.

    Construction of a $125 million private hospital in St Albans is tipped to start in the new year.

    Sunshine Private Hospital, to be located directly across the road from the Sunshine Hospital on Furlong Road, will include 150 beds on seven levels and is expected to treat 12,000 patients a year.

    Dr Laurie Williams, one of the developers of the project and owner of Western Day Surgery, the existing day procedure centre on site, said the hospital would be operating fully within 18 to 24 months of construction starting.

    Services offered are likely to include gynaecology, maternity, IVF, ophthalmology, endoscopy, urology and cardiac surgery.

    Western Day Surgery will be demolished to make way for the new hospital which will offer an expansion of existing specialist consulting services, a general practice, a dental clinic, radiology services, a pharmacy and cafe.

    The hospital will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, but it is yet to be decided whether it will have an emergency department.

    Dr Williams said the hospital would complement the services provided by Western Day Surgery.

    A private hospital will provide greater access to specialist and general medical services to local people who would otherwise have to travel to the other side of Melbourne for treatment, he said.

    Our site is across the road from one of the states busiest public hospitals and

    will make a significant contribution to what is fast becoming the most important community health precinct in the west of Melbourne.

    The private hospital will be in addition to a proposed $200 million hospital for women and children at the Sunshine Hospital site as promised by Labor as part of its election campaign earlier this month.

    Brimbank council city development director Stuart Menzies said Sunshine Private Hospital had the potential to influence the increasing health-related training and employment opportunities in the Sunshine National Employment Cluster, as designated in Plan Melbourne.

    The Sunshine area already accommodates a significant level of investment in existing social and physical infrastructure, such as the Sunshine Hospital, the Western Centre for Health Research and Education, and two campuses of Victoria University, Mr Menzies said.

    A high-profile double-fronted freehold building in Meltons main street has sold for $1.15 million at auction.

    The property at 285-287 High Street was owned by the Commonwealth Bank which has moved to the new Woodgrove Shopping precinct.

    The buyer is a local accountant, who intends to occupy the premises.

    Agents James Gregson and Adam Lester, from Fitzroys, handled the campaign on behalf of the bank.

    Mr Gregson said more than 30 parties showed interest in the property, which helped drive up the sale price.

    He said the $1.15 million sale price was quite large and a strong result for the area.

    Its a good price, Mr Gregson said. [High Street] is a good solid strip and it

    should continue to be a strong strip.Mr Gregson said the property appealed to

    many different buyer profiles ranging from developers to local businesses, because of its central position on High Street and the opportunity for development.

    The property offered opportunity to occupy, invest or develop, with excellent development and subdivision potential, allowing a purchaser to make their mark in a prime retail location in a major western growth corridor, he said.

    Mr Gregson said the sale last week showed there was confidence in the local market and Melton was an area of growth that continued to offer opportunity to local businesses.

    Commuters on the Ballarat line have been promised an extra 40 weekly train trips between Ballarat and Melbourne if the Napthine government is re-elected.

    The extra services will mean trains will run between Ballarat and the city every 40 minutes during off-peak times. The new services will start in January, 2017.

    Liberal candidate for Buninyong Ben Taylor said the move would benefit neighbouring towns as much as it would Ballarat.

    All these extra trains will stop at Ballan, Bacchus Marsh and Melton as well as commence or terminate at Ballarat, Mr Taylor said. So its about improving access to jobs in Melton or Ballarat for all residents along the line.

    Liberal candidate for Wendouree Craig Coltman was thrilled by the announcement.

    The Napthine government has promised at least one extra week-day service for Albury, Ararat, Echuca, Warrnambool, Sale, Maryborough, Traralgon and Shepparton. Swan Hill and Bairnsdale will get an extra return Sunday train.

    Scoring an upgrade to the presidential suite of a luxury hotel is the stuff travellers dreams are made of.

    That dream became a reality recently when I checked in to the Park Hyatt Melbourne for a girls night to find we had been upgraded from a club deluxe room to the presidential suite. From the moment we opened the 17th-floor door, it was clear wed hit the jackpot.

    There are not enough words to describe how large and lavish everything in the 240-square-metre suite is.

    Starting out in the circular entrance hall, we were greeted by a large open-plan lounge and dining room complete with fireplace, baby grand piano and stunning views of St Patricks Cathedral and the Fitzroy Gardens.

    From there, double doors lead to a study and library and follow through to the master bedroom, with two king-size beds, a fireplace, TV and his-and-hers chaise lounges.

    The massive marble bathroom was my favourite, with a gargantuan jetted spa with built-in TV; extra-large shower with a standard showerhead, hand-held showerhead and jets set into the walls you know, just in case you missed a spot.

    The bathroom also sported his-and-hers vanities stocked with luxurious Aesop amenities and an exercise bike. This lead into a walk-in wardrobe and dressing room larger than some hotel rooms, which then lead to a kitchenette.

    The whole suite features rosewood and silk walls, plus original paintings.

    As part of our package, we had access to the Park Lounge on the 19th floor, which offered two hours of evening drinks and canapes, and a continental breakfast the

    next morning. The Park Lounge is available to guests staying in Park Hyatt suites, or those who have paid that bit extra for club privileges and it is definitely worth the extra money.

    Enjoying even more stunning views of Melbourne, we washed down our canapes with champagne and questioned hotel staff about celebrities who had also stayed in the presidential suite unfortunately, discretion

    is key at the Park Hyatt and our lovely waiters would not give any names. However, a quick Google search revealed we were in the same company as the Rolling Stones, George Bush senior, Matt Damon and Morgan Freeman.

    After our evening drinks, we headed back down to the 17th floor to make the most of our suite, trying out the piano and spa before retiring to the very comfortable beds to watch a movie. My only complaint is that

    we only had a night to indulge in our lucky upgrade. The Park Hyatt Melbourne, located on Parliament Square, is tucked away behind Parliament House and offers that rare mix of being secluded and yet within walking distance of restaurants, shops and everything else Melbournes CBD has to offer.

    The hotel also features a 23-metre indoor swimming pool and spa, fitness centre, The Lounge, and Radii restaurant and bar.
