WHAT’S AHEADMOORHEAD, Minn. --The Minnesota State University Moorhead men’s basketball team (16-1, 7-1 NSIC) will compete in its first road game in nearly a month this week when it visits Bismarck and Minot, North Dakota for two Northern Sun Intercollegiate games. Currently atop the NSIC, MSUM will face Mary on Friday night at 8 p.m. and Minot State on Saturday at 6 p.m.

The Dragons continued their winning ways with two home victories over NSIC opponents Upper Iowa and Winona State last week. MSUM is one game ahead of Northern State in the NSIC North Division and tied with Augustana for the best record in the league at 7-1. MSUM moved up one notch to No. 13 in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II poll, announced on Tuesday.

First up, on Friday the Dragons face Mary at 8 p.m. following the completion of the women’s game. In 16 games between the two schools, MSUM holds a 9-7 advantage in the all-time series and has won the last six meetings dating back to Feb. 4, 2012. The Dragons hosted the Marauders earlier this season on Dec. 6, with MSUM posting an 81-63 victory. Senior guard Jordan Riewer scored 24 points to pace the Dragons who shot 40 percent (14-of-35) from the three-point line in the victory.

The Marauders are currently 3-9 this season and 1-7 in the NSIC. The Marauders won their most recent contest with Bemidji State on Jan. 3 86-80. Before that point, Mary lost eight consecutive games. Junior guard Marqueallis Edwards leads the team in scoring, averaging 14.3 points per game.

Next, the Dragons travel to Minot, N.D. to face Minot State on Saturday at 6 p.m.Saturday’s game between the two teams will be the 29th meeting between the two schools, with MSUM holding a 19-9 advantage in the all-time series. The Dragons have won the last six matchups against the Beavers dating back to Dec. 7, 2011 and all five games since Minot State joined the NSIC in the fall of 2012. The Beavers traveled to Moorhead earlier this season on Dec. 5 and the Dragons routed the Beavers 99-64. Six Dragons scored in double digits for the Dragons, led by junior guards Tyler Vaughan and

Ngijol Songolo who each had 15.

This season, the Beavers are currently 9-5 on the season and 4-4 in the NSIC after beginning the year at 5-1. Minot State split road games last week, falling to Bemidji State 84-76 on Friday before defeating Minnesota Crookston 80-73 on Saturday. Senior forward leads the Beavers in scoring, averaging 12.6 points per game.

A LOOK BACK AT LAST WEEKMSUM hosted two NSIC foes last week and came away with two victories, improving to 16-1 on the season and 7-1 in the NSIC. The Dragons stand alone atop the NSIC North Division with a 7-1 conference record.

Senior guard Jordan Riewer surpassed 1,000 points in his career and set a career high in assists with nine in a 106-81 thrashing of Upper Iowa on Friday night. The Dragons shot an incredible 69 percent (40-of-58) from the field and 58.3 percent (14-of-24) from the three-point line in the win. Junior forward Isaac Sevlie scored 18 points, grabbed four rebounds, and blocked two shots to aid the Dragons, while freshman guard Tanner Kretchman tied a career high with 15 points.

In the second half, MSUM scored nine consecutive points to increase its lead from 60-50 to 69-50. Sevlie had the final four points in the run to give the Dragons a 19-point lead with 15:05 left to play. Kretchman hit three straight shots, including two three-pointers for the Dragons to cap a 10-1 run to give MSUM its largest lead of the night at 90-65 with 6:20 to play in the game, as the Dragons cruised to a 106-81 win.

On Saturday night, the Dragons narrowly escaped defeat, ending the game on an 18-5 run to fend off Winona State in a 71-65 win. Sevlie paced the Dragons with 21 points in the game. The 21 points was a career high for Sevile, who also set career highs in rebounds (eight), offensive rebounds (five), minutes (28), field goal attempts (12), free throws made (11), and free throws attempted (13). Riewer notched eight assists to become the school’s all-time leading assist leader.

After trailing 60-53, the Dragons responded with a 10-0, including a three-pointer from junior guard Evan Holt that gave MSUM the lead for good at 61-60 with 3:49 left to play in the game.

•Senior guard Jordan Riewer reached two milestones this past weekend that will cement his place in Dragon history forever. •The Dragon point guard surpassed 1,000 points in his career on Friday night in the win over Upper Iowa. Riewer is the 27th player in Dragon history to reach the 1,000-point club and the first since Alex Novak entered the exclusive club in 2013 with 1,219 points. Through Saturday, Riewer now has 1,020

career points.•The 6-2 guard passed Ralph Western’s school record of 339 assists on Saturday in the win over Winona State. Riewer dished out a career high nine assists on Friday and followed it up with eight on Saturday. Riewer now has 345 career assists.•For the season, Riewer is eighth in the NSIC in scoring at 16.4 points per game, third in three-point field goals made per game at 2.8, and first in assist to turnover ratio at 4.8.

•After an impressive weekend where he set career highs in points, rebounds, offensive rebounds, field goals, and free throws made, junior forward Isaac Sevlie was named the NSIC North Division Player of the Week.•The Dragon big man averaged 19.5 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks per game over the weekend, while shooting 57.1 percent (12-of-29) from the field and 83.3 percent (15-of-18) from the free throw line.

•The Red Wing, Minn. native scored 18 points on a career high seven field goals made in a 106-81 victory over Upper Iowa on Friday night. Sevlie also grabbed six rebounds and two blocks in the game. •Sevlie’s Saturday night was even more impressive in a 71-65 win over Winona State. The 6-foot-9 power forward set career highs in points (21), rebounds (eight), offensive rebounds (five), minutes (28), field goal attempts (12), free throws made (11), and free throw attempts (13). In arguably his best night as a Dragon, Sevlie blocked two shots and grabbed a steal as well.•For the season, Sevlie is averaging 11.8 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. Sevlie ranks eighth in the NSIC in field goal percentage at 57.9 percent and third in blocked shots per game at 1.5.

•The Dragons rank in the top-10 in the na-tion as a team in 10 different categories:•1st in Total Three-Point Field Goals Made: 190. Jordan Riewer leads the team with 48 while Aaron Lien has 36.•1st in Turnovers per game: 8.5. •Freshman guard Tanner Kretchman had his best shooting performance of his young career in Friday night’s win over Upper Iowa. The Fargo, N.D. native tied his career high with 15 points, while also setting or tying career highs in field goals made (five), field goals attempts (seven), and three-point field goals made (three). Kretchman also had three assists and a steal in the game.•The freshman is averaging 14.8 minutes per game off the bench for the Dragons,

a much different role than what he was accustomed to during his high school career a Fargo Davies. Kretchman is averaging 4.8 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game.

•After a nearly a two week break from game action, the Dragons came out firing on all cylinders in their matchup against Upper Iowa. The Dragons shot 69 percent (40-of-58) from the field in the 106-81 win, the fourth best shooting performance as a team in the nation for the 2014-15 season. MSUM also shot 58.3 percent (14-of-24) from the three-point line and 66.7 percent (12-of-18) from

the free throw line.•MSUM shot 66.7 percent (20-of-30) from the field in the first half and 71.4 percent (20-28) in the second half.•No Dragon missed more than four shots, as sophomore guard Aaron Lien went 6-of-6 from the field, junior forward Isaac Sevlie shot 7-of-9, senior guard Jordan Riewer shot 6-of-9, and freshman guard Tanner Kretchman went 5-of-7 for the night.•From beyond the arc, Riewer was 4-of-6, Lien was 3-of-3, Kretchman was 3-of-3, and junior guard Ngijol Songolo was 2-of-3.

Korf is fifth in the NSIC in three-point field goal percentage at 51.8 percent.•Senior guard Everett Robinson is second on the team in scoring, averaging 12.4 point per game while leading the team in rebounds per game at 6.6. Robinson leads the team in field goal percentage at 62.5 percent (fifth in the NSIC) and took home the Dec. 1 NSIC North Divi-sion Player of the Week honor after averaging 15.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game during the week.

COACHING BIOIn his first four seasons as head coach, Chad Walthall has led the Minnesota State University Moorhead men’s basketball team to unparalled heights. Having completed his fourth season in 2013-14, the Dragons are poised to continue as a formidable program in the rugged NSIC and region.That successful run -- one of the biggest turnarounds in all of Division II -- in Walthall’s first four years includes a first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 1965, the most wins by any coach in his first four years at MSUM (76), and the best three-year stretch in the program in more than three decades (61 wins). The stretch also saw MSUM win its first conference title since 1981-82 when the Dragons won the NSIC North Division title in 2013-14.During the past three seasons, MSUM has averaged 20 wins per season and has won five NSIC tournament games during that time span. Prior to Walthall’s arrival, MSUM had won just two NSIC tournament games since 2000.Known for his ability to rebuild collegiate programs, Walthall has done just that at MSUM and has the Dragons poised to be a contender for years to come. Taking over a team that was 10-17 prior to his ar-rival, Walthall, in his second season at MSUM, took the Dragons to the NCAA tournament, recording a first-round win and advancing to the NCAA regional semifinals. In four years, he has compiled a record of 76-41 -- an average of 19 wins per season. In the previous three seasons prior to Walthall’s arrival, MSUM averaged 11 wins.Walthall has never had a losing record in conference play in 11 years as a collegiate head coach.The success continued in 2013-14 as Walthall guided a young Dragon team with just two seniors to the NSIC North Division title and to the program’s second 20-win season in the past three years. The Dragons were the only NSIC team to beat regional qualifiers Minnesota State, Mankato (which was ranked 11th in the nation at the time) and Winona State during the regular season.Senior guard Tarell Clark and junior guard Jordan Riewer earned All-NSIC honors. MSUM was ranked in the top 30 in several statistical categories throughout the season.In 2012-13, MSUM continued its progression under Walthall with a 19-11 mark, reaching the 19-win mark for the second consecutive year. That included a thrilling 78-74 win over No. 11-ranked St. Cloud State and an eight-game winning streak. The Dragons earned a first-round home game in the Northern Sun Intercol-legiate Conference tournament for just the second time in school history -- the first being in Walthall’s second year in 2011-12 -- and earned an 87-78 win over SMSU to advance.Senior Alex Novak also set MSUM career records in blocks (223) and rebounds (1,054) during Walthall’s first three years. Novak also earned Capital One/CoSida Academic All-America first-team honors in 2013, becoming the first Dragon student-athlete to achieve the honor in four years, and the first men’s basketball player since 1996 to do so. Novak was first team All-NSIC, while senior Anthony Tucker earned All-NSIC second-team honors.In 2011-12, Walthall guided MSUM to a 21-10 mark and led the Dragons to the NCAA tournament. Not only did MSUM advance to the NCAA Tournament, but they earned a first-round win, an 82-66 victory over Southwest Minnesota State, to advance to the second round.The Dragons started the year with an 11-0 mark, their best start since 1971. They were ranked as high as 16th in the nation, the first time MSUM has been ranked in program history. The team also beat Division I foe North Dakota State, 90-84 in an exhibition game to start the season.In Walthall’s first season in 2010-11, he proved he was more than capable of rebuilding the Dragon bas-ketball program. In 14 years prior to his arrival, the program had won only 40 percent of its games and posted just two winning conference seasons. Walthall, who has had winning league records in each of his 11 years as a collegiate head coach, led the Dragons to their first overall (15-12) and NSIC (12-10) winning seasons since 2002-2003.Prior to arriving at MSUM, Walthall was an assistant coach at Iowa of the Big Ten from 2007-10. While on the Hawkeye coaching staff, he assisted in recruiting Iowa’s 2010 recruiting class which was ranked 20th in the nation and third in the Big Ten, by Van Coleman. Walthall also served as interim Head Coach for the Hawkeyes for four games, while Head Coach Todd Lickliter was sidelined due to health reasons.Walthall’s head coaching experience has a history of rebuilding basketball programs. In 2000 he was hired as Head Basketball Coach at Loras College. He served seven seasons (2000-07) becoming the third win-ningest coach in school history. He also served as Director of Athletics from 2004-07.Walthall was named 2006-07 Iowa Intercollegiate Conference (IIAC) Coach of the Year while leading the Duhawks to a 15-1 conference record and the IIAC title. Along with achieving regular season success, Walthall led Loras to its first IIAC tournament title and first NCAA tournament berth in school history. His seven-year mark at Loras was 116-69..Walthall took over the Loras program after serving as assistant coach at Eastern Michigan for two years (1998-2000) and St. Olaf College for four years (1994-98). He was head coach at Redwood Valley High School for one season (1993-94) and a graduate assistant coach at St. Cloud State University for two years (1991-93). While at St. Cloud State he also served as head coach for a Collegiate All-Star team that traveled to Europe.Walthall attended Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., earning a bachelor’s degree in Physical Educa-tion and Health in 1991. While at Saint Cloud State he earned his master’s degree in Athletics Administra-tion (1993). As a collegiate athlete at Concordia, Walthall played quarterback and was part of two Min-nesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) football championships. He earned all-conference honors in that sport as a junior and senior. He also served as a student assistant basketball coach.As a high school athlete in Staples, Minn., Walthall was team captain and three-year starter in football, basketball and baseball, earning numerous All-Conference honors.Walthall is a native of Staples, Minn. and currently resides in Moorhead. He and his wife, Jenni, have four children, a daughter Brooke (14), twin sons Brady and Blake (12), and son Beau (eight).
