History of Glencoe

1692 Massacre– King William (3rd) ordered all clans to

sign an oath of allegiance by Jan. 1 1692. The MacDonald clan chief, Maclain, of Glencoe had gone to the Inverlochy to sign the oath instead of Inveraray. When he did arrive Inverraray to sign the oath, it was Jan. 6th.

– Maclain had returned believing that his signature was accepted. It was not.

– Campbell of Glenlyon took a group of soldiers who were hosted by the MacDonald clan, not knowing they were there to kill them. On February 12th, they attached after being hosted for over 10 days.
