American Legion Post 72 has been on a wild rideHello world!Coming at you again in this month’s

Montgomery/Sagamore report. This month I want to talk about the American Legion Byron Cox Post 72 baseball team. And it’spretty fitting to do so because their squadis mostly made up of player from Mont-gomery County and the Sagamore AthleticConference.

As I’m writing this, the team is three wins away from a repeat trip to the Amer-ican Legion State Finals. You can check inside today’s edition of The Paper to seeif they won, and if they did check back Monday to see if they locked up the title.

But for now I’ll just talk about the team and the ride they’ve been on this sea-son. They’ve certainly had their ups anddowns, but they’ve stuck it out and hadfun all the way. They’ve had a lot of fun.No matter what they’re doing, they finda way to make it an enjoyable experiencefor themselves and those around them.They’re just really a loose bunch.

Five of the players are from Crawfordsville High School. Of those,Brian Boehm is the only one that willreturn next year. He’ll be a senior and has

come on as quite therelief pitcher in thepostseason for theByron Cox boys. Garrett Phelps and Connor Smith each graduated from Crawfordsville this year. They’re both pitchers, but they’vegotten the opportu-nity to hit and play other positions in the field when Post 72was ahead in somegames this year. Phelps even caught for acouple innings Thursday at the regional.Logan Meadows and Jordan Jackson grad-uated from Crawfordsville in 2013. Jack-son, who will play at Marian Universitynext year, always seems to bring the fun out of any situation he’s in and Meadowscan do plenty of clowning around himself.

The North Montgomery contingent consists of 2014 graduates Mitch Riceand Chase Mahoy and scoreboard opera-tor Cory Hallas. If Mahoy doesn’t find aspot coaching in his future my mind will

be blown. The kidknows the game and is as smart asanyone on the field.Rice is an unrealathlete that can stealany base at any time . . . and usuallydoes. They are both constantly working to get better and never get down on themselves regard-less of what happens on the field. Hallas

brings fun to any situation he’s in, and theguys love having him around.

Southmont will certainly benefit from the experience next season. Both of theirrepresentatives on Post 72 will return asseniors next season. Devin Miller and Mitch Dehne have cut their teeth against great competition not only across the diamond, but for a spot on the field aswell. Watching these two, it’s obviousthat they’re picking up on a lot of what theother guys are doing and learning a ton about the game. It shows when they get

their reps and produce for Post 72.Out of the county, Lebanon has a strong

presence on the team. They have the twoyoungest players on the team in Bryce Fortner and Bryce Shearer. They’re both ahead of their peers in a lot of ways andare incredibly smart. Brantley Fortner,who was an all-state honorable mention se-lection this year, has a knack for the game and can’t be found without a smile and a joke. Nathan Kincaid , who will return fora senior season, is a solid infielder and aheck of a hitter.

Outside of the Sagamore, Cole Snyder and Tyler DePugh represent Fountain Central. Kaleb Belcher, Jake Haste andMichael Herrmann are all from North Putnam. Haste, who seems to get bigger,taller and stronger every day, is usually at the forefront of the laughs – always findingsomething to turn into a joke.

So that’s the team. They’re a great group of guys and it’s been really fun tocover them this summer. Hopefully they’llpick up three more wins and I’ll be making some trips to Plymouth for the state finalsnext week.

NEW MARKET-South-mont fans likely remember Pat Myers as a bruisingfullback and linebacker on the 2012 squad. He wasentertaining to watch and always delivered big hits, no matter whether it wason offense or defense.Since his graduation from Southmont in 2012, Myershas stumbled upon adifferent way to entertain Mountie fans. Through calling the action from the press box.

“I enjoy being aroundsports and as a player I knew that the more excit-ing it was and the more thecrowd got into it, the more it helps you as an athlete,” Myers said in an interviewwith The Paper. “It helpsyou take your mind off of the pressure when youhave a good backing.”

Myers certainly has a

way about him that getsthe home crowd fired up. His thunderous introduc-tions help set the stagefor the Mounties to takethe court or diamond (heannounces basketball andbaseball).

“It’s exciting for me too,” Myers admitted. “Iget into it.”

Myers said that he got into announcing when Southmont athletic director Aaron Charles approachedhim and asked him to dobasketball. Myers said that he hopes to continue doingit, but will be unable to do spring sports next season.

Myers, who is entering his sophomore year at Wabash College, plans on throwing for the Wabash track and field team duringthe fall and won’t be ableto call baseball games. He has also started as an

assistant coach this season for the Mountiefootball program, focusing on wide receivers andcornerbacks.

“Taking a year off from playing was reallyweird,” Myers said. “There was a void almost.The biggest thing is seeing (sports) from a differ-ent perspective. I remember playing and gettingpumped up when they announced my name orannounced Devon (Burton’s) name or any of theguys. It fires you up and that’s what I try to do forthe athletes when I’m announcing.”

It wasn’t long into his rookie campaign as an announcer that Myers was put on a big stage.Burton, his friend and teammate, was not in hissenior season and going to achieve the milestoneof scoring 1,000 career points for the Southmont basketball team. In the same week, Cali Wetliachieved the same feat for the Lady Mounties.

“It was nice to see them get it and be able to callit,” Myers said. “I had to be a little more subduedwhen Cali got hers because it was during the sec-tional. But I will remember calling those games.

“It was exciting to see Devon turn his season around. He was the quarterback when I was thefullback. It was tough to see him not play and not know if he would get a chance to come back.”

Burton was injured during the football season and missed half of his senior basketball season.

As for the future, Myers said that he will stayinvolved in sports in whatever capacity may ariseand noted that he hoped announcing was in hisfuture.
