In reading, we will complete our unit of study titled, “Bigger Books Mean Amping Up Reading Power.” We will also read various biographies about important people from the past. A biography is a true story of a person’s life. It gives facts about what the person did. It tells about events that happened to the person. In writing, we will complete our unit of study titled, “Writing about Reading.” Students will write letters to share their ideas and opinions about the characters they read about in their ‘just right’ books and teacher read alouds. In math, we will continue with Topic 12 - Measuring Length. Students will learn how to estimate and measure length using different customary units. We will continue to measure length using inches, feet, and yards, as well as centimeters and meters. Good Citizen Celebration Spelling This week’s spelling list consists of 10 spelling words that review previously learned spelling patterns, plus 3 word wall words. Your child should be able to pronounce, spell, and use each spelling word in a complete sentence. Students will learn that there are three states of matter (solids, liquids,gases). In social studies, we will discuss goods and services. Goods are made or grown, in which people use or consume. Services are activities provided by other people, such as doctors and waiters. We will discuss how goods and services meet people’s needs. Students will learn how people earn money by working, and how people exchange money to purchase goods and services. Music Program First and second graders will have a music program on Tuesday, March 20th at 6:00 pm in the gym. The theme of the program is based on the book Not a Stick. Students should wear tennis shoes, dark pants, and a blue, yellow, or Fairview t-shirt. The students look forward to showing you their musical skills and talent at the program. PARCC Testing Students in grades 3,4, and 5 will be testing all next week. They will take the PARCC Test, which aligns to the Illinois State Learning Standards. Students will be assessed on English/language arts and math. We will have a pep assembly this Friday afternoon to help build excitement about the upcoming testing week!
