Boston’s Sports Nut, Ken

Through the years, Boston sport fans have been able

to enjoy a tremendous success by our beloved local

sport teams. With the success of the Red Sox (two

championships), Celtics (2008 Champion), Bruins

(Division Champion three times in the past ten years),

Revolutions (reached five Cup title matches in the past

ten years), New England fans can proudly say that “we

got it good.” We have grown not to accept a loss from

either one of our teams; even after a loss, we expect

them to get back up and fight hard for the victory.

This is where the Pats come in. Since November 5

(vs. the Colts) and November 12, 2006 vs. NY Jets),

the Pats have yet to lose two straight games; they are

38-8 in the regular season including going 16-0 in

2007. Please do not tell Head Coach Bill Belichick

about this record; he only cares about their next oppo-

nent, not what the team has accomplished the past

three years. In continuation to coach’s strategy, let me

remind you of the Pats’ four opponents in November:

Miami Dolphins (11/08), Indianapolis Colts (11/15),

NY Jets (11/22), New Orleans Saints (11/30).

Ironically, the Colts and Jets follow each other on the

schedule again for the first time since they both hand-

ed the Pats their last losing streak. What can we, New

England sports fans, be thankful for this thanksgiving?

Great football. To make the playoffs this year, the Pats

need to take at least three out of four in November in

order to remain in contention in the AFC.

Happy Thanksgiving to all, and enjoy football season!

till a budding band, Hannah & The Bloodlines have already proven themselves to be an asset to the New England music scene. A band that has excelled in the studio, and have taken it to a whole other level live can easily accomplish this toilsome task. Com-bining the catchiness and marketability of pop, the control and intricacy of a jazz group, and the edge and attitude of a rock band, The Bloodlines are in a class of their own. Each member is so remarkable and unique in his or her own right, Hannah Sumner, Ste-phen Gaspar, Jeremy Vovcsko, Ryan Broderick, and Cory Sterling set this band miles apart from their competition. If bets were being taken on bands that will define our generation, put your money on Han-nah & The Bloodlines, because it is only a matter of time before The Bloodlines change music forever.

A band that is unique from just about all genres, and at the same time manages to encompass every genre, has an easy time appealing to a large audience. However, their style took time to perfect, and the band wasn’t always pushing the boundaries, as Hannah Sum-ner the front-woman of Hannah & The Bloodlines re-calls, “When I put The Bloodlines together my main influences were John Mayer and Norah Jones. Then I went to The Police’s last show ever at Madison Square Garden last year, and after seeing them play I wanted to create something with that immense energy and passion. When I saw that show it was like no concert I had ever seen – it was like I found my musical parents!” Hannah did all she wanted and then some writing songs that em-body dense harmonies, complicated rhythms, and strange melodies, all while still keeping the sensibilities of pop-rock music that can be catchy and easy to listen to. “I always begin writing a melody first. Then if I re-member it after some time, I know it’s catchy enough to develop... I really enjoy writing intricate music that still feels fluid and that you can move to it without thinking about it.” Raised in San Diego and vocally educated in Los Angeles, Hannah is trained to be able to sing in any style. She began her career singing with chops, but soon gained an aspiration to sing like nobody else, inspired by vocal revolutionaries that are undeniably themselves such as Sting and Bono “When I saw The Police I had already written ‘Zim Ba Du Wei Um.’ I think that’s why I was so strongly drawn to them. I was like: ‘hey I have a song that sounds like it could fit into this style,’ and with a bit of tweaking one of our first, and one of our strongest songs was born.

The band is breaking through in a time when teen-pop and hip-hop still rule the airways, however The Bloodlines are taking an old approach to a very new style of music – putting the emphasis on their live per-formances. “As important as an album is and always has been” Steve Gaspar the guitarist and co-writer for The Bloodlines says, “people today have a hard time buying a record from a band that they don’t know – especially with the era of free downloads and streaming music. Why spend the money on a CD when you can listen to two thirds of the album for free on Myspace? However, when you hear a band live at a venue, and you can’t get that one or two songs out of your head…then you HAVE to buy the CD and discover the album as one cohesive piece of art.” Stephen grew up in arguably the most musical family in the history of musical families. His dad is a Grammy nominated songwriter and Ham-mond organ player who has shared the stage with artists such as B.B. King, James Brown, and Edgar Winter to just name a few of his accomplishments. His grandfa-

ther was a classical trombonist, who gave the “gift” of music to his dad. “When I was young, my dad told me to become a plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills, and for a while I was going to listen to him. It’s a weird feeling when you get bitten with this bug that is the desire to do nothing but play live original music for people, even if it means sleeping on Ryan’s shoulder in the back of Cory’s car after eating a Big Mac.” However, Stephen has a self-professed addiction to fast food – maybe his life isn’t so bad after all. Once he set his mind on play-ing guitar for the rest of his life, the rest came naturally, he earned a scholarship to Berklee College of Music to study guitar, and while at the most prestigious music school in the world he was given the honor of playing in many of the house bands at the Berklee Performance Center – a privilege only given to some of the best play-ers at the college. He was also selected by members of the staff to play as one of only two graduating guitar students in the 2009 Commencement Concert featuring Smokey Robinson and Linda Ronstadt.

Go ahead and try to imagine the combination of catchy pop music with the pure energy and imaginative-ness of experimental rock music, then throw in the im-provisation of jazz music, and you are starting to understand the ideals that The Bloodlines possess. Each member has their own opinion on how to define their style of music, one of the three founding members of The Bloodlines – Ryan Broderick on drums sums it up remarkably: “I like to have the song create itself. If you’re trying to figure out what style of music we’re playing, then you’re missing the point of what we’re trying to create… The music we play is up to the inter-pretation of the musicians playing it; with that ideology our music always has an element of improvisation.” Growing up in Long Island under the guidance of re-nowned drummer and instructor Dom Famularo is not a bad way to get your feet wet as a young drummer, but if there is one thing that Ryan has made clear it is that he has never wanted to do anything but play drums for a living, and was a “professional musician” before he could drive – he was playing with the blues legend Sam Taylor all over New York while his parents were still taking him to the gigs. The endless practicing and gig-ging soon turned into an obsession that could only pro-duce one of the most educated and experienced drummers for his age. His desire to never stop learning is what keeps him striving to not only evolve for the music of The Bloodlines, but also to evolve the art of drumming as a whole. Not to mention the fact that Ryan is co-writer for The Bloodline’s first single “Raven.” Maybe you shouldn’t consider him to only be the drum-mer in the band.

Page 11: MSM November 2009

11 MASSACHUSETTS' SINGLES MAGAZINE - www.singlesmag.net

“Far From The Tree” the band’s self produced debut album has already made its way into the hands of some very important people, and has gained the band some national and international acclaim includ-ing airplay all over the country and overseas – even in places as exotic as Macedonia, a few top 10 singles on the website reverb-nation, and TV appearances includ-ing an unforgettable outdoor beach performance on Martha’s Vineyard for Plum TV’s Morning show. Touring in an “up-and-coming” band is everything you could imagine, and sometimes things you couldn’t “You never know what’s going to happen next, one night you’re driving through pitch-black the middle of nowhere to get to the hotel from a gig, and then you wake up and re-alize you’re to-tally surrounded by one of the most beautiful places in the country” bassist Cory Sterling says. Getting to travel to exotic places like Nan-tucket Island, and Vermont can have their plus sides, however, its not exactly life on a private jet “Your never know what’s living on those cheap motel sheets anyway!” Growing up in New Mexico, playing all sorts of music from straight ahead jazz, to hard rock, Cory could have the most di-verse ears in the band “Trent Reznor is one of my fa-vorite musicians of all time,” Sterling says as he scratches his shoulder that bears a Jaco Pastorius tat-too. With the addition of Jeremy Vovcsko on alto saxophone The Bloodlines took a turn that no one saw coming – not even the band. Educated as a jazz saxo-phonist, Jeremy soon gained the attention of many of his peers. He has played with so many jazz greats (including Joe Maneri, George Garzone, John Medeski of Medeski Martin & Wood, and Joe Lovano just to name a few), and after joining Hannah & The Blood-lines, he made the crossover into more mainstream music. “For one reason or another there has always been a discrepancy between what the musician wants to hear and what the audience wants to hear; whenever they collide it results in some form of popular or ‘pop’

music. However, when I first heard The Bloodlines, I realized that it satisfied both the musician’s need to express themselves, as well as the audience’s need for immersion in the music through careful repletion and hooks they can remember and latch onto.” It says something about Jeremy’s abilities that he was chosen to share the stage with bass legend/experimental futur-ist Me’Shell Ndegeocello – just to drop one of the many names that consider Jeremy to be one of the best. “My style (if you will) is a collection I take from what I hear around me: other players, city sounds, and noises in my head. So in effect you could say I’m a bigger thief than Carlos Mencia!”

Even though they have only existed for just over a year and a half, The Bloodlines contribution to mu-sic can already be considered to be rebellious, extreme, and even seditious. “We’re playing what comes naturally to us. I have orchestrated parts for each song, but its always up to our (The Bloodlines) interpre-tation” Ryan says. Their fans might not number into the mil-lions just yet, but make no mistake, there are fans, and they consider The Bloodlines to be their musical outlet, and they will fight for them. They

are a band that takes no prisoners at their live show, and that you can listen to over and over again at home – and you’ll want to! That’s something you can’t al-ways find in today’s music scene. The album reveals secrets that can only be noticed with numerous listens, but you won’t mind spending time to discover them. Seeing The Bloodlines live is an unforgettable experi-ence that brings people back to the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s where live music mattered most - when a band had to put up or shut up, otherwise they were either “one hit wonders,” or never heard of in the first place. Take it from us; The Bloodlines do more than their share of putting up. As Steve says “I already know we’re the best, it just might take everyone else a little while to figure it out as well – and if they never do, screw it… We’re are having a great time anyway!”

Written by a woman, for women

Online dating versus

Other dating servicesBy Janelle Powers

There are many ways to meet a man but one

of the most popular techniques today is online dat-

ing. People often feel more comfortable and less

vulnerable looking for a mate over a computer

screen and a keyboard than they do in person. Many

fail to take into account there are major drawbacks

involved when using this popular method.

There are pros and cons involved in the

ways we look for love either online or through a

personal dating service. Let’s start with the cons of

Internet dating. With online dating, it is fairly easy

to lie on a profile page. Many dating sites only care

about whether someone has a valid email address

and a valid credit card than whether the person is

being truthful or not. An important factor to take

into account is that the Internet has a portal in

which anyone, bad or good can access it. When us-

ing the Internet to find love, you open yourself up

to all kinds of people. People who know what to

look for and what questions to ask to make them-

selves seem harmless. They also know what to say

and write about themselves to attract vulnerable

women. With online dating, you never know what

you are getting.

Pros of online dating are as followed; With

the Internet being so vast, dating on the worldwide

web means that there is a bigger pool to fish in. At

any given time, there can be a large number of peo-

ple online looking at your profile. Finding a date on

the Internet is as easy as popping up online and

writing a quick blurb about yourself. Anonymity is

very easy to maintain online which is what attracts

many people.

Though newspaper personals are not as pop-

ular anymore, many other types of matchmaking

services have managed to stay in business. The cons

of personal matchmaking services are the fact that

success mostly depends on the number of members

the dating service have that they can match you up

with. Also, matchmaking services can at times be

too expensive for the general population.

One of the reasons why matchmaking ser-

vices are still prominent is because of the following

pros; most matchmaking services screen daters’

background, marital status and criminal records.

People who pay for personal matchmaking services,

often are serious about finding a mate. Many

matchmaking services specialize in a niche that ca-

ters solely to one group of people. With this type of

medium there are also a lot of advantages that

makes it easier for you to find your ideal mate.

After examining both routes, my best advice

is to use the medium that you feel the most com-

fortable with. In the end, all anyone is really look-

ing for is connection with the right person.

Cause and Effect

Every now and then an event or series of events,

whether fortunate or not occur in our lives and changes us

for the better. Whether we experience trauma that improves

our ability to make better decisions in the future, or we

learn from past mistakes to fix a not so pleasant present, we

tend to reinvent ourselves. With that said, is it possible for a

single cause to create a drastic effect?

It was a slow start to a fast approaching fall when it

came to dating and socializing. I had let my own insecuri-

ties take control of enjoying current educational and person-

al accomplishments. I found myself obsessing over what

my life was lacking and foolishly mocking my downfalls

and setbacks especially after being approached by a poten-

tial prospect. Realizing change was necessary, I became fed

up portraying the role of the sulking graduate having trou-

ble with the jumpstart of his professional career and found

myself back in the classroom. I was given a chance to influ-

ence the young minds of the next generation in hopes to en-

courage the following of dreams, however once in the

classroom I felt more like preparing for future nightmares.

Then one random weeknight, with a slight case of writer's

block and a slight headache from blocking out ill mannered

10th graders, I found myself at an Irish pub chugging cheap

beer and dwelling on misfortunes. Suddenly, while barely

listening to an old roommate who was surprisingly shocked

to find that her first date with an Irish bartender resulted in

too much drinking, promiscuity and no call two days later, I

locked eyes with the one that would change everything.

One street over, Helen was feeling the wrath of un-

expected change herself. Her first love had been forced to

move away to pursue a professional goal and after numer-

ous years of patiently waiting for the love of her life to re-

turn; when he did he seemed almost unreachable. Years of

separation and unsure expectations for the future had Helen

awkwardly waiting for signs that the wait was worth it. Un-

fortunately they had both changed so much that they barely

recognized each other inside and out. It had been three days

and two official dates since his return and the only affec-

tionate gestures made were the few tears that Helen pro-

duced while cutting onions for dinner. Half way through

the recipe, Helen’s now slightly reachable lover shared a

story that involved an allergy to garlic and an emergency

room visit. As Helen glanced down towards mixed veggies

sautéing in butter and garlic, she realized she knew nothing

about the one she hoped to know best and started to com-

pulsively sob. Attempting to blame her tears on onions,

Helen started towards the bathroom. Fortunately on the way

there, Helen’s reachable lover reached for her arm, turned

her around and kissed her. For the next ten minutes, while

garlic burned on the stove, one long drawn out kiss changed

everything for the awkwardly almost unreachable couple.

That same night, locked eyes opened the door to

conversation and before I knew I was hitting it off with

someone who was this time poorly hitting on me. About

two beers into the conversation, just as personal insecurities

had my game hitting an all time low, one confession made

my whole perspective on status turn upside down. After in-

forming me that as a graduate from law school, living in his

parent’s basement and substitute teaching were the last

things he expected to be doing, I realized my current status

wasn’t all that bad. That night, as I headed home, I started

to harp once again on what my life was missing, a lover, a

raise and even maybe some real estate, but I quickly revert-

ed back to my conversation with the soon to be lawyer I

locked eyes with. With that single comment I changed from

self conscious to consciously aware of myself and all I had

accomplished.

SCORPIOOctober 23 - November 21If life's got you down, why not indulge in a little casu-al sex? But, before the skin play heats up, set some ground rules first. That way, nobody gets hurt and all parties have been forewarned. Don't have a booty call? It's time to find one!

SAGITTARIUSNovember 22-December 21Your momentum is positively progressive today. You see beauty everywhere and it shows -- your aura is brighter than ever. So put one foot in front of the other and move forward. This rare energy comes without consequences.

CAPRICORNDecember 22-January 19Yes, you're on a mission from the stars -- just don't miss a step along the way. Pay close attention to what you're doing. After all, a misplaced detail or a miscon-

strued email could put you in hot water with someone

special

AQUARIUSJanuary 20-February 18The momentum is in your favor right now, and you can't lose. Phew! You're finally at a great place in your life. Before you get hooked up for good again, do some traveling -- by yourself. Get out and explore the world. It's time to take advantage of your enviable marital status!

PISCESFebruary 19-March 20When it comes to dating, nothing's really going your way. Why? Because you're taking everything so darn seriously. Lighten up and loosen up! It's not as if you're going to marry this guy or gal -- it's just dinner and a movie. What's so hard about that?

ARIESMarch 21-April 19

Your ability to deflect awkwardness with humor is refreshing. So don't try to monitor your words so much -- let the conversation flow naturally. If you call your date by the wrong name, just laugh it off. It's not the first time and it won't be the last!

TAURUSApril 20-May 20Late-night calls only mean a couple of things: either some-one's died or someone's horny. Chances are it's the latter. Whether you go on that booty call is your choice. Just know this: things haven't changed, so don't fall for the rhetoric. If you do this, know full well what you're getting into.

GEMINIMay 21-June 21Today calls for appropriate communication. So don't text

or email when a face-to-face conversation is the call. It's really all about treating people the way you'd want to be treated. So if you're doing the dumping, have a little re-spect and let them down lightly.

CANCERJune 22-July 22You're not being authentic lately. Is it fear? Ego? If you're tossing out lots of bait but getting few bites, it's time to reveal more of yourself. After all, if you're not genuine with the people you meet, how can you expect any sort of real progress?

LEOJuly 23-August 22You're in hog heaven. That date left you feeling some-where on the edge of the solar system. The problem is, he or she hasn't called, and it's been days. Instead of playing

silly juvenile mind games, be an adult. You make the call

and ask what's up. After all, you deserve to know where you stand.

VIRGOAugust 23-September 22A little desperation is no excuse to skimp on your morals or requirements. Don't compromise just because it's been awhile since you've had a little nooky. Get to know this person before you hop into bed -- it's called psycho screen-ing, and you'd be smart to pay heed. and believe in your heart.

LIBRASeptember 23-October 22

It's not exactly procrastination, but you don't want to see too available either. When responding to that first or second date, it's all about timing. So don't immediately pick up the phone. Let the mystery grow -- a little tension and intrigue never hurt anyone.
