and how to use field-tested, time-proven and science-based methodologies to perform strategic sustainable development in any context, at any scale.

CORE THEME 2: LEADERSHIP IN COMPLEXITYLeadership in complexity means to handle respectfully the complexity of our current world and effectively facilitate change in this context. You are invited to explore the meaning and implications of complexity for social change and your own leadership. You will learn and practise methodologies and develop skills for facilitating the change needed to build a vibrant, sustainable future together with others. On the path to becoming a change maker, you will learn to recognize and work with many ways of seeing the world.

“The programme illustrated the interconnected regenerative landscape that we are all a part of, very effectively. This has helped me look at problems by asking the right questions. I have learnt to ask 'why', and I see that a simple 'why' can really open up possibilities that I wasn't even aware existed.”

- Rumy Narayan, India, Class of 2013,

Sustainability Consultant

THE CORE ELEMENTSThe MSLS learning journey combines several elements to help you learn about, respond to and create change in complex systems.

WHY FOCUS ON COMPLEXITY?Nature itself, as a living system, is complex. Human society, a system nested within nature, is complex as well. As a result, most of the social and environmental challenges we face today are also complex - meaning they are highly ‘entangled’.

To create a resilient social fabric, including a robust global economy supported by a healthy environment, we need to learn what it means to work and lead effectively in complexity and build our capacity to engage others in navigating change towards sustainability, together.

A SYSTEMS THINKING APPROACHTo address complex challenges effectively, you will learn ‘whole-systems’ ways of thinking, planning and problem solving. This approach is the background to both of the main themes in the programme.

CORE THEME 1: STRATEGIC SUSTAIN-ABLE DEVELOPMENTStrategic sustainable development means to create and execute economically viable programs for evolving products, systems, organisations, communities and everything else in a way that supports global society's transition towards sustainability. You will learn about the sustainability challenge and related opportunities,

DIVERSITY AND CROSS-SYSTEM CONNECTIONAs we study complex systems, we live and work in one together - your peer collaborators will be from dozens of countries and many professional fields, bringing a great diversity of knowledge, experience and perspectives together in one learning community. PROGRAMME DESIGNyour leadership capacity. In addition to giving you practical strategic tools, you will be challenged to question, stretch and grow as an individual. A great deal of care is put into the design of the programme’s environment, in order to create the conditions that will best support and challenge you to engage with the learning experience.

Taken individually, each of the core elements of the MSLS programme would be powerful in its own right. But the transformational nature of the programme comes from the way we integrate them together.

The delivery of the programme follows a spiral learning approach, beginning with an overview of the two themes, followed by progressively deeper exploration, practice and reflection. As the year progresses, learning also becomes increasingly self-directed, with solid support from the staff - your learning facilitators.

The MSLS programme is designed to take you on a transformational learning journey to increase

CURRICULUM CONTENT: CORE THEME 1- STRATEGIC SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENTThe MSLS Programme approaches sustainability through the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development (FSSD).

coordinated use of supplementary concepts, methods and tools for sustainable development.

The FSSD opens up the possibility for creative solutions uniquely suited to any context and has the power to bring together the seemingly incompatible (e.g. ethics with profitability, short-term with long-term, the small organization with the whole world, and stakeholders with apparently divergent interests).

A SUCCESSFUL STORYThe FSSD has been developed over the past 25 years through an ongoing, comprehensive, peer-reviewed scientific process, including application and testing in the field. Over the course of its history, the FSSD has successfully contributed to advancing sustainability in hundreds of organisations around the world, including through the advisory work of The Natural Step . Examples include businesses such as IKEA, Interface, Starbucks, Nike, Scandic Hotels, Hydro Polymers and Rohm and Hass, as well as municipalities such as Whistler BC in Canada, Madison, Wisconsin in the United States, and many more around the world. In Sweden a network of more than ninety ‘eco-municipalities’ has signed on to implement the FSSD in their operations.

1. An international NGO promoting the use of the FSSD and a key contributor to its development.

WHAT IS THE FSSD?Based on systems thinking, the FSSD is a science-based, structured approach to working systematically and strategically with the complex sustainability challenge society faces. It is designed to facilitate analysis, planning, decision-making and strategic collaborative action towards sustainability across disciplines and sectors at any scale, in any context.

At its core, the FSSD has basic principles that define social and ecological sustainability, and guidelines for how to strategically support society’s fulfilment of those principles. It is a non-prescriptive framework supporting any person or organization to create a vision of their own sustainable future within their specific context. It stimulates ideas for what steps might be taken to move towards that vision, and supports prioritization of these possible steps into an economically viable change plan. The FSSD also guides selection, development and a

At the same time, other researchers and practitioners around the world integrate the FSSD with still more fields and apply it in numerous contexts.

CURRICULUM CONTENT: CORE THEME 2- LEADERSHIP IN COMPLEXITYHaving a framework to develop effective, strategic approaches towards sustainability is critical. But this alone is not enough to produce results. In order to create and implement these strategic approaches with others (in the ‘real world’), a particular set of leadership skills and capacities is also needed.

In MSLS, you will examine learning and change processes in individuals, organisations and society through systems thinking approaches. You will also explore the role of the individual, including yourself, in creating a sustainable society. The overall aim is for you to develop the skills and capacities to understand, engage, co-learn, lead and energize change.

DIFFERENT APPROACHES FOR DIFFERENT SOLUTIONSMany traditional leadership approaches are not designed for dealing with complexity. By learning about various types of leadership, you will discover which are most effective in different situations - especially which are best for intervening in complex systems to create movement towards a sustainable society. You will also learn how participatory processes can achieve innovative solutions no single individual is likely to develop alone.

BE, THINK AND DO DIFFERENTLYThrough the Leadership in Complexity theme, you will develop personal capacities, examining your

You will develop various ways of thinking, from critical and strategic to systems and futures-oriented. You will gain both theoretical knowledge and practical skills for working effectively with others to achieve better results.

“My participation in MSLS helped me refine and build confidence in my entrepreneurial muscles. The program encouraged me to take chances, to prioritize finding a tribe of like-minded people to work with, and to dream boldly of what is possi-ble in the world, then go do it.”

CEO and Chief Catalyst of the co.space, Co-Founder: New Leaf Initiative, Education 20/20, PURE

“The complex challenges of our time demand us to learn, reflect and come out of our silos to find common solutions together. Through on-the-ground experience, MSLS allows you to immediately apply the leadership approaches and strategic framework you learn, to work through complex issues.”

expected to develop their own intellect. Group work, personal initiative and critical thinking are all important. The relationship between staff and students is informal.

A DIVERSE, GLOBAL, LEARNING COMMUNITYWith over 500 people spread across more than 75 countries, the MSLS alumni community is as diverse as it is tight-knit. The unique learning journey of the programme results in a shared experience that fosters friendship, loyalty and mutual support, regardless of which year you attended. Alumni members support one another’s professional queries while sharing resources and work opportunities. “Mini-reunions” pop up spon-taneously across the globe whenever alumni hear another “MSLSer” is in town.

THE EXPERIENCEWithin MSLS, a unique micro-culture exists. The intensity of the programme, its design as a transformational learning journey and its highly international character (typically 40-60 students attend from over 20 countries each year) make it unique - on the BTH campus and in the world.

WELCOME TO THE COMMUNITYThe environment is intimate, supportive and chal-lenging. Expect peer learning and a collegial coaching relationship between instructors and learners. You will be challenged to stretch, grow and expand your ways of looking at the world. Personal reflection and a willingness to engage fully with a variety of learning approaches are as important to success in the programme as academic achievement.

Inside MSLS, alongside the academic content, you will find thought-provoking conversations, cross-cultural learning, potluck dinners and student-organised events ranging from camping trips and picnics to professional skill-sharing workshops. The environment is rich with laughter, growth, comradeship and learning. In addition to valuable professional network development, each year many deep friendships result from the MSLS experience.

STUDENT LIFE IN SWEDENStudying in Sweden may be quite different from what you are used to. While the Swedish educational system emphasises academic quality, it is also permeated with an open and informal atmosphere where students are

THE SETTINGWhat better place to study sustainability than in Sweden, consistently ranked in the top 3 most sustainable countries in the world?

THE PERFECT CONTEXT FOR LEARNINGThe MSLS programme makes its home at the Blekinge Institute of Technology (Blekinge Teknis-ka Högskola, or BTH ) located in Karlskrona, a city of 64,000 inhabitants and the capital of the Blekinge Region in southern Sweden. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its unique naval heritage, the city is situated at the end of the train line, on a Baltic Sea archipelago. Karlskrona abounds with classic Swedish architecture. Its beautiful natural setting makes it a tourist destination in the summer, with regular ferries visiting surrounding islands. Beaches, sailing, kayaking and canoeing are popular. In the winter it can be windy and wet and there is some snowfall, though Karlskrona’s climate is considered mild compared with more northerly parts of Sweden.

“The MSLS experience strength-ened my belief that it is worth-while and possible to find your passion, bring it to the world and make a living of it.”
