D F ,

Peace and all Good!

The Gospels are filled with stories that should give us sinners consola on and hope. Jesus forgave Peter even a er he denied Christ. Jesus did not condemn the adulterous woman. He forgave the repentant thief. Jesus told powerful parables about a prodigal son, one lost sheep and a widow’s lost coin. He ate with sinners and preached of God’s love. Once again, in today’s Gospel, Jesus seeks out the tree climbing, tax collec ng Zacchaeus—and announces that he will be having dinner with him! Zacchaeus is forgiven and then reforms his life. Through the sacraments of bap-

sm and reconcilia on, our sins are forgiven. How are we changed? What resolu ons do we make to avoid the near occasions of sin? How can we improve our prayer lives, our spending habits, our words or ac ons to live in harmony with the Gospel? We have been forgiven; are we forgiving? I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have given a planned, prayerful and pro-por onate offering to this parish. You are appreciat-ed! Your consistent and loyal financial support helps us to con nue all the good works of the Gospel in this community. If you have not decided what you will offer this parish, I invite you to prayerfully consider increasing your weekly offering. It is primarily in the Sunday offering that we find the means to con nue the ministry and upkeep of our beloved parish. Thank you so much! Finally, the upcoming elec ons call us to vote based on moral convic ons focused on the “dignity of every human being, the pursuit of the common good and the protec on of the weak and the vulnera-ble.” (USCCB) All of us should become informed of the key issues and vote. One of the issues facing us in this elec on deals with capital punishment. Ever since St. John Paul II, we have been urged to end the death penalty in our na on. Please see the back of today’s bulle n about this issue and the strong recommenda-

ons of the California Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Have a great week! Love,

S T E W A R D S H I P T H O U G H T

The Gospel story of Jesus’ en-counter with Zacchaeus makes for an ideal stewardship reflec on. So does today’s first reading from the

Book of Wisdom. Good stewards have faith in, and give thanks for, an almighty and powerful God who trans-cends the universe, but who gives personal a en on to every human being. God loves his crea on, his people. He lives in them, and through his Holy Spirit, ins lls a fundamental goodness in them. Good stewards recog-nize this movement of the Spirit as a gi , and make efforts to cul vate this gi and grow in their faith. Take

me this week to stop and look around you, be aware of God’s awe-inspiring crea on, and give thanks for God’s loving care and concern for each of us.

When God blesses you financially, don’t raise your standard of living. Raise your standard of giving.

Say AMEN if you agree.

COLLECTION — OCTOBER 16-22

Be er...... but s ll not mee ng our budgeted needs for October. This week we were $400.00 short. As men-

oned before, our budget is based on last year's collec-ons and the current needs/expenses of the Parish. Are

you giving in propor on to all of your blessings? Have you established and kept your stewardship commit-ments to your parish family? Our goal is to con nue to provide a faith and spirit filled community of worship, mee ng the needs of all of our parishioners. To do that we need your consistent financial par cipa on. Thank you and have a good week!

8 | PARROQUIA MISION SAN LUIS REY, Oceanside, California - 30 de Octubre de 2016

QUERIDOS AMIGOS,

¡Paz y Bien!

End the Use of the Death Penalty in

California Yes on Prop 62 No on Prop 66

Pope Francis "This convic on has led me, from the beginning of my ministry, to advocate at different levels for the global aboli on of the death penalty. I am convinced that this way is the best, since every life is sacred, every human person is endowed with an inalienable dignity, and society can only benefit from the rehabilita on of those convicted of crimes. Recently my brother bishops here in the United States renewed their call for the aboli on of the death penalty. Not only do I support them, but I also offer en-couragement to all those who are convinced that a just and necessary punishment must never exclude the dimension of hope and the goal of rehabilita on."

Pope Francis, Speech to the U.S, Congress, September 24, 2015

California Catholic Conference of Bishops "All life is sacred- innocent or flawed- just as Jesus Christ taught us and demonstrated repeatedly throughout His minis-try. This focus on the preciousness of human life is fundamen-tal to Chris anity and most eloquently expressed in the two great commandments: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart … love your neighbor as yourself." (Mk. 12.30-31) Jesus makes clear that to love God we must love our neigh-bor. Each of us holds an inherent worth derived from being created in God's own image. Each of us has a duty to love this divine image imprinted on every person. "Whoever does not love a brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen." (I Jn. 4.20)"

"In November- the concluding month of the Year of Mercy- Californians have the opportunity to embrace both jus ce and mercy (cf. Ps. 85.11) in their vo ng. We strongly urge all voters to prayerfully consider support for Proposi on 62 and opposi-

on to Proposi on 66."

• The death penalty perpetuates the culture of death in a world reeling from too much violence

• Death Row inmates are dispropor onally three mes more likely to be poor, poorly educated, and people of color than the general popula on

• Sta s cs show the Death Penalty does not reduce the inci-dence of crime

come do algún delito.
