Chipmakersarepushedtodevelopnewandreliableprocessesthatallowtheintegrationofhundredsofmillionsoftransistorsontoasinglemicrochip.Analoguedesignersarechallengedtobuildaccuratecircuitsfromclearlynonidealtransistors.•Digitaldesignersfaceproblemswithregardtothedesign,layoutandtestingofhighlycomplexcircuits.Systemdesignersmustmeettherequirementsofapplicationenvironmentsthatareoftenmultidisciplinary.
TheMSctrackinMicroelectronicsprovideselectricalengineerswiththehighlyspecialisedknowledgeandexperiencetodesign,fabricateandtestdevices,
circuitsandsystems.Thedepartmentisinternationallyrenownedforitsresearchonsmartsensors,microsystems,semiconductorfabrication,solarcells,signalprocessing,RFtransceiversandRFcomponents.ThisMScprogrammeinMicroelectronicsprovidesyouwiththeopportunitytotransformyourownideasfromtheorytoapplicationinthedepartment’sowncleanroomand,quiteoften,givesyouaplatformtopresentyourworkatinternationalconferences.Therangeoffacilitiesalsoencouragesfruitfuldiscussionsbetweendesignorientedandtechnology-orientedstudents.
TheMasterofScienceprogrammeinElectricalEngineeringatTUDelftoffersthetrackMicroelectronics.ThistrackisdesignedforstudentswithaBachelor’sdegreeinElectricalEngineering.Theprogramme,coverstheentirespectrumofmicroelectronics,rangingfromtechnologyanddevicestoanalogueanddigitalcircuits,sensors,systemsandmicrosystems.

IamarecentgraduateoftheMicroelectronicstrackatTUDelft.WhendecidingtoattendTUDelft,Ihopedtodevelopmyprofessionalskillsinallareasofcircuitdesignandtolearnaboutthemostadvancedtechnologiesavailableintheindustrytoday.Thiswishhasbeencertainlyfulfilled,asthecurriculumatTUDelftisup-to-datewiththerecentdevelopmentsinthefieldandprovidesstudentswithseveralwaystodeepentheirknowledgeofelectronics.Ithinkthebestpartaboutthistrackisthefactthatstudentsareencouragedtopursuearesearchdirectionfromthebeginningoftheprogram;thecoursestheychoosehavetobealignedwiththetopicofthethesisprojecttheywilleventuallychoose,whichensuresthattheresearchworkissupportedbyadequatepriorknowledge.IparticularlyenjoyedmyownthesisprojectatNXPSemiconductors,whereIwas
responsiblefordesigningahigh-speedanalog-to-digitalconverter(ADC)fromarchitecturestudydowntothetransistor-levelimplementation.Thethesiswasagreatopportunityformetoexperiencethesemiconductorindustryfirst-handandtobetterunderstandthebusinessworldIwasenteringupongraduation.Owingtothelengthoftheproject,Iwasexposedtomultiplepartsofthedesignflowandthisallowedmetobetteridentifymypreferences,aswellasthepointswhereIneededtoimprove.ThefactthatupongraduationIwouldhaveayearofworkexperienceundermybeltisjustanaddedbenefit.AfterbeingexposedtovariousdisciplineswithinthefieldofMicroelectronics,Ibelieveajobinanalog/mixed-signalcircuitdesignwouldmakemethehappiestandallowmetousealltheknowledgeIhavegainedatTUDelft.

Microsystems&Technologyfocussesonallaspectsofintegratedmicrosystemdevelopment.Itcomprisesdesignandtechnologyforsensors,actuators,MEMScomponentsandaddressesdeviceandsystemintegrationandapplicationspecificpackaging.
RFCircuitDesignpreparesyoutobecomeaskilledRFdesigner.Focusisplacedontheanalogue,microwave,digitalandmixed-signaltechniquesthatcharacterizetheRF/wirelesssystemsoftodayandtomorrow.AnalogCircuitDesignfocusesonthedesignofprecisionanalogandmixedsignalcircuits.Itconcentratesonlow-power,lowvoltageamplifierandADconverterdesignforsensorinterfaceelectronics.BiomedicalElectronicsconcentratesonthedesignanddevelopmentofcircuitsand(micro-)systemsforbiomedicalapplications.DigitalSystemscoverstheoryanddesignmethodologiesfordigitalcircuitsandsystems,withapplicationareasinwirelesscommunication,biomedicalimaging,quantumcomputingand3DICdesign.

IamaprofessorofMicro/nanoelectronics,SystemIntegrationandReliability(MSI&R).Mymainresearchinterestsincludeheterogeneous,multi-levelandmulti-functionalmicro/nanoelectronics,systemintegrationandreliability.ThefieldofMSI&Risinteresting,becauseofitseconomicandsocialimportanceandthescientificchallengesthatitpresents.Throughtechnology,wecreatehigh-value,industrialisedandreliablesmartsystems,includingwafer,packagingandassemblyprocesses.Intermsofscience,wedevelopcross-disciplinaryknowledgeaimedatexplainingandpredictingthebehaviourof
