MSc (Eng) Transport Planning and Engineering

The focus of this programme is on engineering solutions to transport issues, particularly how the design of systemsdetermines the nature of how people and goods are transported. Students learn how to use engineering to meet thechallenges of integrating different modes to make travel safer, greener and more efficient.

Students learn to:• appreciate the needs of different users in transport design and management • use modelling to plan networks and predict demand• plan transport construction and infrastructure projects • apply design standards to roads and junctions • assess advanced traffic control systems• align engineering solutions with transport policy.

The programme is particularly suited to those who wish to extend their engineering capabilities, having studied a civilengineering or related degree. It is approved as ‘further learning’ for holders of accredited degrees seeking Chartered statusvia the Institution of Highways & Transportation (IHT) or the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).

Modules Students are first equipped with core technical skills in engineering design, data collection, modelling and planning before choosing from a range of options, all of which have practical applications:

Principles of Transport Engineering Four optional modules - selected from up to 20Transport Data Collection and Analysis specialist subject areas including:Principles of Transport Modelling - Traffic Management, Network Analysis Models,Transport Planning and Policy - Maintenance of Pavements, Traffic Microsimulation, Dissertation - Road Infrastructure Design, Traffic Control Systems

Entry requirementsApplicants should have a good honours degree in a relevant numerate discipline. Other graduates and holders of professionalqualifications may also be considered. Where applicable, non-UK students need to demonstrate proficiency in Englishlanguage.

ScholarshipsBoth ITS and the University offer a number of scholarships each year for UK, EU and international applicants. These rangefrom partial fee payment to full awards of up to £14,000 tax free.

Careers The transport sector suffers from a skills shortage, meaning that those with a postgraduate qualification are ideally placed foremployment and rapid career progression. Consultancies are the largest employers of ITS graduates, but other destinationsinclude local and central government, operators, logistics, not-for-profit, regulatory bodies and international agencies.
