MSc Advanced Clinical Practice

Guidance on applying for Recognition of Prior Learning

1. Introduction Thank you for your interest in studying with the Open University.

This guidance document is for recognition of prior learning applications towards modules on the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice (MSc ACP).

Recognition of prior learning (RPL) encompasses both Recognition of prior certificated learning (RPCL) and Recognition of prior experiential learning (RPEL)

DefinitionsRecognition of Prior Learning (RPL): any form of recognition of any kind of prior learning and/or assessment and covers both certificated prior learning (RPCL) and experiential prior learning (RPEL).

Recognition of Prior Certificated Learning (RPCL): the identification, assessment and formal acknowledgement of learning and achievement that occurred at some time in the past prior to entry to a course of study, and for which the learner was awarded credit. This may include CPD and vendor courses, for example.

Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning (RPEL): the identification, assessment and formal acknowledgement of learning and achievement that occurred at some time in the past prior to entry to a course of study, but not in the context of formal education or training. This may include work experience, voluntary activity or other occupational learning and is not usually certificated.

Please ensure you read all the information within this guide very carefully because it contains important information to support you with your application.

The MSc ACP requires learners to demonstrate successful achievement of the programme and module learning outcomes that have been developed from the knowledge and capabilities for ACP set out in the national frameworks.

MSc ACP Level RPCL RPELK 803 Non-Medical Prescribing (NMP) 60 credits PG* Yes YesK 804 Developing Advanced Clinical Practice 60 credits PG Yes YesK 805 Advancing Professional practice 60 credits PG Yes Yes

*PG refers to postgraduate study. This is level 7 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and Level 11 in Scotland.

Throughout the guidance RPL will be used to refer to both RPCL & RPEL unless otherwise specified.

RPL can only be considered for a maximum of 120 credits of the programme.

The guidance will highlight:

The knowledge and skills you will need to demonstrate that you have gained through your previous certificated learning and learning experience.

The types of evidence you could use to demonstrate your prior learning. The practical steps to take if you decide you want to apply for RPL against either or both

modules.

2. Overview of academic credits and level of study

RPL enables learners to gain credit for previous academic study and /or experiential learning that fully meet the learning outcomes of specific modules on the programme they are applying for, thus ensuring that learners are not repeating learning.

2.1 Prior credits and level of study

It is anticipated that learners wishing to complete the MSc ACP may have successfully completed courses that meet the learning outcomes of modules on the programme, but their previous study may not be at post graduate level or may be less than the required 60 academic credits per module.

If you have completed a postgraduate level 60 credit NMP programme, you can apply for direct recognition, with no requirement for RPEL, of K 803. This may also apply to K 804 and K 805 if you have postgraduate certificated learning that maps to the all the learning outcomes for the module/s you are considering for RPL. Please contact the Credit Transfer Team to see more information on this process.

If you have completed NMP at undergraduate level or, at post graduate level but with less than 60 credits, you will need to complete the Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning (RPEL) Application Form.

K 803 NMP you must be able to demonstrate:o successful achievement of an accredited Non-Medical Prescribing (NMP) module at

undergraduate or postgraduate level o recorded qualification as an Independent and supplementary prescriber with your

professional governing body (NMC, HCPC or GPHC)o Evidence of prior post graduate level learning, accredited and/or experiential, that

supports your application for RPL

K 804 you can apply for RPL by evidencing postgraduate level learning, accredited and/or experiential, equivalent to 60 credits that is mapped to the learning outcomes for that module.

K 805 you can apply for RPL by evidencing postgraduate level learning, accredited and/or experiential, equivalent to 60 credits that is mapped to the learning outcomes for that module.

2.2 Calculation of the RPL evidence required

Academic learning credit is calculated based on the learner ‘effort’, measured in hours, and the assessment of learning, measured in ‘words’ or equivalent, of assessment tasks.

Learning can take a myriad of different forms including reading, listening to presentations, engaging in discussion, attending meetings, taking part in learning events, planning, preparing and delivering learning to others for example.

You will be applying for RPL to demonstrate that you have undertaken learning that is equivalent to that of a 60 credit module. Learning that is certificated has been assessed but for experiential learning you will need to provide ‘written’ evidence of your learning that equates to the credits that you are seeking recognition for.

In order to calculate the expected level of learner hours and the assessment work you will need to undertake you will need to:

Detail all certificated study - level and number of credits Identify the gaps in credit Calculate the amount of study you will need to undertake Calculate the amount of evidence of learning required Provide evidence of learning at the required academic level that equates to the required

amount of learner effort.

3. Application process

The major part of your application for RPL requires you to provide evidence of your prior learning and work experience against the relevant learning outcomes of the programme modules.

Once you have collated the evidence, you will be expected to complete the ‘Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning (RPEL) Application Form’. You will be required to complete a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate how your previous learning and work experience enables you to meet the learning outcomes of the modules you are seeking RPL for. Appendix 1 provides full details of the learning outcomes for K 803, K 804 and K 805.

The portfolio will require you to provide evidence of your learning through successful study on an accredited learning programme and/or through experiential learning within your professional role.

We would recommend that, prior to requesting the application form, you ensure you have copies of all certificates and professional documents as you will have 4 weeks from receipt of the RPL application form to complete the portfolio and submit it to the Open University.

4.2 Guidance on demonstrating postgraduate level learning

The information here is to help you complete your portfolio in the most appropriate way so that your application for RPL is successful. It will also give you some guidance on how to make sure your evidence reflects postgraduate level learning.

The academic credit level descriptors, for Higher Education (SEEC, 2016) state, at postgraduate level learners can:

Display mastery of a complex and specialised area of knowledge and skills Employ advanced skills to conduct research, or advanced technical or professional activity Accept accountability for related decision making, including use of supervision Operate in complex and unpredictable and/or specialised contexts Has a deep and systematic understanding within a specialised field of study and its

interrelationship with other relevant disciplines. Demonstrates an understanding of current theoretical and methodological approaches and

how these affect the way the knowledge base is interpreted The Open University Post graduate level descriptors are detailed in Appendix 2

We know that learning and skills can also be demonstrated through professional experience. You need to demonstrate to us that you have achieved learning from your clinical practice, through the evidence you provide in your portfolio.

Ways you might consider doing this are by demonstrating how you have used research within your work environment. For example, sharing with us how you have reviewed, and utilised evidence and research in practice. Have you undertaken or engaged in research in your clinical area? Have you written any evidence-based guidelines or protocols? Have you undertaken any systematic reviews for clinical projects?

If you did, what did you learn through the process, what skills did you need to be effective at this, how did you critically analyse the information and research?

8

Page 9: MSc Advanced Clinical Practice - Distance Learning Courses and Adult Education …  · Web view2021. 3. 18. · MSc Advanced Clinical Practice . Guidance on applyi. ng for . R. ecognition

You also need to demonstrate your ability to communicate ideas and information, demonstrating that you understand what critical thinking is and how you have used critical thinking skills in your clinical practice. This is vital as it is a key skill required for postgraduate level study. The University of Edinburgh have a really clear explanation of what Critical thinking is if you are not sure

There is a fantastic range of Open University ‘open learn’ free courses which you can access. You could then apply what you have learned from these courses in your portfolio to demonstrate your evidence meets the required post graduate level.

Here are a few suggested Open Learn courses:

Are you ready for postgraduate study?

Developing good academic practice

Succeeding in postgraduate study

Understanding different research perspectives

Making decisions

5. Assessment of the portfolioFrom receipt of the RPL application form you will have 4 weeks to complete the portfolio and submit it to the Open University. The portfolio will be assessed by an academic within the School of Health, Wellbeing and Social Work. Feedback on the portfolio will be provided, ACP RPL guidance Appendix 3, however the portfolio will not be graded. Portfolios will be reviewed in line with the Open University standards for External Examination of assessed work. The outcome of the assessment of the portfolio will be communicated to you by the Programme Lead. Successful application for RPL will result in accreditation for the module as part of the completion of the MSc ACP.

6. Next steps

Once you have read through this guidance document, you may wish to talk to one of our Staff Tutors for the ACP programme as they can help you decide on your next steps. If you decide to apply for RPL against either of the modules detailed above, we will then provide you with the application form and information on what to do once it has been completed. We will also inform you of the cut-off date for the full application to be completed.
