Night of Champions ceremony in London

Formula 1 legend John Surtees CBE and FIA Deputy President (Sport) Graham Stoker crowned the 2015 MSA British Champions during the Night of Champions ceremony in London on 30 January.

MSA Chairman, Alan Gow, welcomed the winners of UK motor sport’s most prestigious titles for the annual awards evening. They were joined by a series of special award winners, each recognised for outstanding achievement.

FIA President Jean Todt could not attend on this occasion but sent a video message in which he highlighted the strength of grassroots motor sports in the UK and called for a round of applause in recognition of volunteers’ hard work and dedication to the sport.

Before presenting awards, Stoker also praised the UK’s standing within world motor sports and paid tribute to the competitors, clubs, marshals, officials and other award winners whose successes were honoured on the night. Fresh from being made a CBE, Surtees, the only world champion on two wheels and four, returned for a second successive year to entertain the guests and hand out trophies.

Steve Rider returned as Master of Ceremonies and was once again joined by colleague Louise Goodman.

Alan Gow, MSA Chairman, said: “On behalf of the MSA I would like to congratulate all the 2015 MSA British Champions and special award winners who were

crowned during our Night of Champions last Saturday night. Once again this prestigious event underlined the incredible breadth and depth of UK motor sport as well as the matchless calibre of all our volunteers, marshals and officials. Thank you also to John Surtees CBE and Graham Stoker for presenting the silverware. And to all those who attended, our best wishes for a very safe and successful 2016.”

Dare To Be Different launches online communityThe online community underpinning Dare to be Different is now up and running, helping to inspire, connect and celebrate women in motorsport.

The community will allow women in all areas of the sport to connect directly with those who have similar aspirations, and those who will be able to offer practical advice from their own experiences.

Dare to be Different’s ambassadors will also take an active role in the community. They will be online to offer guidance to members and answer questions relating to their particular area of expertise.

The community forms a core part of the Dare to be Different initiative, and will be a platform that allows us to communicate key news and opportunities to members. This will include invitations to our networking events as well as notifications about our competitions.

For more information on the Dare to be Different community, visit: www.daretobedifferent.org

Haas F1 Strategist becomes latest D2BD ambassadorAnother inspirational name has been added to the list of Dare to be Different ambassadors, as Ruth Buscombe becomes the latest role model to help Drive Female Talent!

Recently recruited from Ferrari as Chief Race Strategist at Haas F1 for the coming season, Ruth is undoubtedly a leading talent in her field and someone who will inspire the next generation of female motor sport talent.

“It’s a privilege to be an ambassador for Dare to be Different,” said Ruth. “It’s so important that we fight the archaic stereotype that women and motor sport ‘don’t go together’ to prevent misinformation and dogma prescribe a subset of career choices for girls. I’m proud to be a part of an initiative that will showcase the fantastic opportunities available within Motorsport; where what counts is what you can do- not what gender you are.”

Alongside Susie Wolff and fellow ambassadors Claire Williams, Rachel Brookes and Alice Powell, Ruth is keen to support the next generation at the forthcoming Dare To Be Different events. She will also be heading online to connect with her peers, offer advice and share stories within the D2BD community.

BT Sport to broadcast MSA British Rallycross ChampionshipBT Sport will screen the MSA British Rallycross Championship in association with Odyssey Battery for the first time later this year, with a series of one-hour highlight shows from championship events.

Programmes will be produced by Globecast and screened on BT Sport, whose boss Simon Green said: “BT Sport is delighted to expand its motorsports portfolio, which already includes Moto GP, IndyCar, World Rally Championship, FIM Speedway World Championships and Formula E.”

A team from Globecast, led by Gary Champion, will produce the programmes, with additional online content following events, promoted through the championship’s social media channels to raise the profile of the sport.

British Rallycross Championship manager Tim Whittington believes the introduction of BT Sport to the championship is key for the development of the series. “The focus in 2016 is to deliver successful events and prepare the championship for the future. Having a quality TV product and a broadcaster who’s engaged with the championship is a key part of that,” he said. “Globecast will be providing additional content outside of the TV programme and we’ll use that to help build the profile of the championship as widely as possible.”

MSA seeks nominations for Environmental AwardThe MSA is seeking nominations for the 2016 Environmental Award, created to recognise outstanding achievement in environmental responsibility and the active promotion of sustainability within motor sports. In 2012 Lord Drayson became the inaugural recipient for Drayson Racing Technologies’ excellent B12/69EV electrical prototype racer. The following year Williams Hybrid Power won this award for its ingenious flywheel energy recovery systems. The latest winner is Greenpower, which runs an annual competition for schools, colleges and universities, challenging students to design, build and race their very own electric car.

Michael MacDowel, 1932-2016

The MSA was sad to learn that Michael MacDowel, former Chairman of the Speed Events Committee, has passed away recently following illness. He was 83.

Michael was a successful competitor in both tin-tops and single-seaters, before turning his attention to speed events and achieving great success in the MSA British Hill Climb Championship, with a pair of titles in 1973 and 74. He was also elected to the BRDC in 1955 and went on to become a Director.

After hanging up his helmet, Michael became heavily involved in the governance of motor sports through his roles not only on the Speed Events Committee but also Motor Sports Council.

McLaughlin wins top BWRDC accoladeLorina McLaughlin received the British Women Racing Drivers Club’s Lifetime Achievement Award during the club’s annual awards dinner, hosted by Suzi Perry at Wroxall Abbey Hotel earlier this month.

McLaughlin was recognised for her long and successful involvement in motorsport, both as competitor and as an organiser of F1 demonstration events.

Many other accolades were presented, including the Chairmans’ Cup, which went to Lorraine Gathercole for her commitment to the BWRDC throughout the year in her roles as both Vice-Chair and Press Officer.

Gail Hill, BWRDC Chair, said: “I congratulate this years' trophy winners on their outstanding results, many recorded by some of our youngest members through to our oldest ones. My thanks to our esteemed speaker and guest of honour, Suzi Perry, who has shown great interest in our unique club and entertained us brilliantly with so many fascinating anecdotes from inside F1.”

Loughborough Car ClubLoughborough Car Club has launched the 2016 Disabled Driver Scholarship, an MSA-supported initiative offering two winners a free season of club motorsport.

From all applicants, 12 drivers will be invited to a selection and training day, where their driving aptitude and personal attitude will be assessed. Association of Northern Ireland Car ClubsPat McAleer, a stalwart supporter of club motorsport in Northern Ireland for over 60 years, has received the Association of Northern Ireland Car Clubs (ANICC) Lifetime Achievement Award.

Over the decades McAleer has volunteered – mostly in timekeeping – with clubs all over Ireland. He is always willing to offer hospitality in his camper van, whether for safety car crews and officials or competitors such as Jari-Matti Latvala, who once enjoyed a cup of tea and some home-made soda bread after retiring from an event!

Forresters Car ClubForresters Car Club, from Cwmbran in South Wales, presented the Wales Air Ambulance with a cheque for £2600 at the club’s recent awards evening.

Members raised the money at club nights, quizzes and by raffling a free entry to a Caerwent Stage Rally in 2016. Club Chairman Neil Fuller said: “Each year the Forresters Car Club members choose a charity to support, that has a connection with our sport. Because of the excellent service that the Air Ambulance carries out, our members fully embraced this charity for 2016 and raised a fantastic sum of money.”

FHR / tether / anchor post compatibility

Please refer to the FIA produced diagram above for clarification on compatability.

On the left the diagram shows the compatibility between FHRs and the tethers, with the only unacceptable combination being that you cannot use an 8858-2002 tether with an 8858-2010 FHR. An 8858-2002 FHR is compatible with both the 2002 and 2010 standard tethers.

On the right the diagram shows the compatibility between anchor posts and helmets, demonstrating that an 8858-2010 or 8860-2010 approved helmet can

only be fitted with 8858-2010 anchor posts. And an 8858-2002 or 8860-2004 approved helmet can only be fitted with 8858-2002 anchor posts.

The arrows in the middle then show that any combination of tether and anchor post is compatible, so an 8858-2002 tether is compatible with an 8858-2010 anchor post or an 8858-2002 anchor post. And an 8858-2010 tether is compatible with an 8858-2010 anchor post or an 8858-2002 anchor post.

Note also that FHR tethers are not lifted. Some models will have a date on the label (as shown right), but this only refers

to the date of manufacture and does not mean that it will expire at any time.

Of course the manufacturer’s guidelines will state that the tethers should be replaced following a significant accident.

Cadet driver minimum weight

With effect from the beginning of this year, there is now a minimum driver weight that must be achieved to compete in the Cadet class. This is currently 27kg – including mandatory race wear such as overalls, helmets gloves and boots, but not optional items such as rib protectors or neck braces etc. (see (U)17.29.6).

TRS ‘Lever Latch’ harness

We have received notification from harness manufacturer TRS that they have identified an issue with the latch system on their ‘NASCAR Lever Latch Harness’. The following information has been released to advise customers what to do if they have concerns: http://www.trs-motorsport.com/@@content/pub/rtc/document/75mm%20Lever%20Latch%20Announcement.pdf

Please note that it does only affect this one model of harness, which is not an FIA-homologated harness, however they may be in use in disciplines where a homologated harness is not required.

Rallycross Spaceframe correction

Please note a correction to regulation (N)8.6.2 in the new Rally Cross Spaceframe regulations. It refers to FIA Appendix J, Art.279, Art 3.7, this reference should be FIA Appendix J, Art.279, Art.5.2.3.

Honda Cadet non-return valves

Please note that the 2016 class regulations for the Honda Cadet class require the inclusion of a non-return valve on the fuel tank breather pipe. Early experience has thrown up one small consequence, with the following notice being circulated to those within the class: “It has been noticed that if the kart is brought into a warm or hot environment, the fuel may expand in the tank without release of the air due to the non-return valve operating. This could result in fuel expelling through the carburettor fuel pipe. So it would be advisable to allow for a breather in these circumstances either by taking off the breather pipe to the non-return valve, or by other means. But only when not actually racing on the track of course.”

Dismountable front fairing mounting kit

As previously advised, and as per (U)17.1.6, the CIK-FIA dismountable front fairing mounting kit will become mandatory for all Junior and Senior non-gearbox kart classes as of 01 March 2016. Some clubs have already made it mandatory from the beginning of the year in their own regulations. For guidance the drawings below demonstrate how the mounting block should be correctly fitted, what is an acceptable positon, and what is an unacceptable position at any time.

British rally stars Tom Cave and Steve Perez joined the panel at the second RallyFuture open forum, run by the Association of West Midland Motor Clubs (AWMMC) in Warwick earlier this month.Cave and Perez sat alongside MSA Chief Executive Rob Jones, MSA Director Nicky Moffitt, and rally safety consultant Sue Sanders.

Jones opened with an introductory presentation, describing the journey that the MSA has been on since the 2014 Jim Clark Rally and explaining the reasons behind the governing body’s commitment to implementing the recommendations of the Scottish Government’s Motorsport Event Safety Review.

Moffitt then outlined the role and responsibilities of the Safety Delegate, while Sanders – Event Safety Coordinator for Wales Rally GB – discussed the particular challenges surrounding spectator safety. Cave and Perez offered the competitor’s behind-the-wheel view of safety matters, before compere Phil Pugh opened the floor to a range of questions.

The next RallyFuture forum is scheduled to take place in Chesterfield on 17 March. To register your interest in attending free of charge, email the East Midlands Association of Motor Clubs’ Phil Foster on [email protected]. Special guests will be announced in due course.

GoRally gets revved up in EdinburghOver 50 officials, competitors and rally organisers attended the inaugral GoRally night held at Pentland Land Rover, Newbridge.

Displays from the Scottish Tarmac Rally Championship, Hill Rally Championship, Ecosse C2 Challenge, Junior 1000s, Scottish Rally Championship, Saltire Rally Club, Turner Autosport, Disability Motorsport, Scottish Motorsport Marshals Club and GoMotorsport ensured the event appealed to all newcomers.

Former SRC champions Euan Thorburn and David Bogie, and current champion Jock Armstrong spoke to the crowds, as did ex-BTCC champion and Scottish Association of Car Clubs President John Cleland. Keith Cowan spoke of the importance of marshal recruitment and training, and nearly-qualified scrutineer Lynsey Wallace gave an account of her speedy demolition of the theory that it takes years of mechanical knowledge to become a fully-qualified Scrutineer.

GoMotorsport RDO Alison Clark spent a day leaflet-dropping around the car dealerships, colleges and automotive training schools of Edinburgh. This proved fruitful as trainee mechanics from GTG were enthralled by the machinery on show. Strathclyde University students had made the trip from Glasgow, and made valuable contacts in their quest to buy a grassroots car and hold an Autotest.

Several teenagers, accompanied by enthusiastic parents spoke to J1000 representative Steven Hay in the absence of co-ordinator David Barlow.

After recently suffering a break-in at their lock-up and having several items stolen, Turner Autosport boss Steve Turner generously donated a brand new Koden KSFH-15 helmet and pair of kart gloves to Edinburgh University Motor Sport Club.

The John Clark Group have been hugely supportive in helping to encourage new participants into motorsport, and it is hoped that GoRally will become an annual event.

Moore’s MonthUpdates from South West RDO Kevin Moore

Getting a Taste for Motor Sport“Several of ‘my’ Motor Clubs in the South West have really taken on board the initiative of ‘Taster Events’ and feeling the benefits of them.

“Having embraced the concept early they are now reaping the fruits of their efforts. With several events being in their third year they have honed them in to well organised, slickly run occasions that take little effort to put on but have huge PR and membership boosting possibilities.

“As well as raising community awareness of Motor Club activities and presence, if the right ‘angle’ is put on the event promotional material, the concept of motorsport can be put across to the public in a very positive way (sell the fact that it offers opportunities in many areas – competing, volunteering, journalism, IT, social activities and maybe charity work to name just a few. All of which can work wonders on a CV if appropriate).

“Although ‘Taster’ events are tempting to put on as an easy way of running a small club only event, to get the most out of their efforts clubs should try and get added value from the event by good promotional marketing beforehand and also by making use of a venue in a location that will attract interest.

“Clubs who have successfully taken onboard ‘Taster’ events have seen healthy boosts, not only to membership numbers but also to club moral as a result of the renewed enthusiasm that comes with them. One of my clubs who make the most of ‘Tasters’ have actually seen membership numbers increase by around 100 by organising an event that was well placed in the calendar and suitably promoted!

“If you or your club is unsure how to run a Taster event or want guidance on making the most of a possible ‘Taster’ opportunity, do not hesitate to contact your local GoMotorsport Regional Development Officer. Ballymena’s Northern Regional College Students Get Revved Up with Go Motorsport!Students at Northern Regional College in Ballymena were thrilled last week when a rally car drove into their class, thanks to local rally driver William Carey and ‘Go Motorsport’ Regional Development Officer, Jonathan MacDonald!

Carey, who runs Ballymena based business Carey Cleaning Machines, crossed the finish line of the Donegal Mini Stages Rally with his Ford Escort Mk2 just a couple of days earlier. He brought his pride and joy into the college, giving the Motor Vehicle students an opportunity to identify the multitude of safety and technical enhancements contained within a purpose built competition car.

Meanwhile, MacDonald was on hand to provide additional information about motor sport as well as deliver a strong road safety message. Students were also able to see a variety of motorsport parts, including a Formula 1 race seat and wheel that were used by Formula 1 driver Nico Rosberg.

“There are lots of motorsport events taking place across Northern Ireland every weekend,” MacDonald said, “and they provide a lot of opportunities for students to get involved. Students can get a lot of hands on experience that will stand by them in their studies and future careers.”

“By joining their local motor club, such as Mid-Antrim Motor Club, it can help to open a lot of doors,” he added. “They can get opportunities to compete in motorsport events or help out on events if that’s what they want to do. It’s a lot of fun!”

MacDonald will be visiting schools and colleges across the country in 2016. Visits are free of charge so if your school would be interested in receiving a free Go Motorsport visit, he can be contacted by emailing [email protected].

profile

When and why did you first become interested in motorsport?Motorsport has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember; my early memories are going along to various meetings with my grandparents who both marshalled. There was never really a moment I can pick as the first but it switched from being their hobby to mine when I started to get involved myself.

How did you get involved?I started off marshalling, long before cadet marshals were introduced. Going along to Vintage Sports-Car Club meetings, I used to wander round the venues with friends then we were asked to deliver grid sheets to various people including the Clerk of the Course and Commentator. We got given £3 which felt like a huge sum at the time, especially as we were going to be there all day anyway. It alleviated some of the boredom you get as kids and provided some money for sweets, it seemed like a win-win situation to me!

Did you compete, volunteer or both?I started off as a volunteer, graduating from running grid sheets at race meetings to helping in the assembly areas and start line at sprints, hill climbs and races as I got older. I also helped set out some PWA7C trials with my grandfather. Once I was old enough, I started bouncing in those trials and I now drive or bounce in VSCC trials

and driving tests. I still regularly volunteer, my heart is always in the paddock and assembly areas as I love the banter and camaraderie you get but I am also a probationary Clerk of the Course for both Race and Speed. At some point in the future I would like to have a go at sprints and hill climbs as a competitor.

What made you want to become an RDO?I am passionate about club motorsport and I like talking to people, both seemed like a good fit when I saw the role being advertised. I was inspired by lots of strong women when I was younger and I wanted the opportunity to continue to show that cars aren’t just for boys as well as put something back into this wonderful hobby. Over the years I’ve met all sorts of people, learnt a lot of skills and had some really great experiences, why wouldn’t I want to encourage others to get involved!

How can you describe your role as an RDO?That’s a difficult one when I’m still relatively new to the role but I really see it as helping ‘proper’ motorsport, people who do it purely for the love of it, despite family and work commitments and ploughing in time and money. I’m not belittling the higher echelons of motorsport but, for example, the guys and girls in orange stood out in all weathers, the competitors in a blustery, cold autotest or a damp 12 car on a week night are not there for the

glamour! My role is to help the clubs that organise and support these events develop as well as work with the Regional Associations but also to show people just how much enjoyment these events can provide.

Do you have a favourite motorsport memory?Too many to list in some ways. My proudest moment was being the inaugural recipient of the VSCC Dan England Award. It was set up by a Jim and Rosemary Adams, who were real marshalling stalwarts in the VSCC, in memory of their nephew, as an award to young marshals in recognition of regularity in marshalling, responsibility shown in conduct, tenacity and dedication. To be the first person to receive it was a real honour.

What are your future motorsport plans?I have arranged to attend some upcoming Regional Association meetings and I’m looking forward to meeting more people. I am also now trying to persuade my partner to lend me his Land Rover so I can have a go at some off-road events; it’s not been successful so far! I hope to get out over the next few months to some of the clubs in the East Midlands and East Anglia region so invitations will be welcome – I will also carry on marshalling with over 25 days in my diary already!

“Motorsport has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember; my early memories are going along to various meetings with my grandparents who both marshalled.”

Richard Egger is still part of the team but is taking a step back from the day to day GO Motorsport programme. He has passed this to Tania and Bryn. He will be working over the next year to help with the handover and with a number of events that we will be a part of. Jess would like to take this opportunity to publically thank Richard for his valued contributions to the programme – they are very much appreciated.
