Medallists were Peter J. Wyllie (Roebling Medal), Peter C. Burns (MSA Award), and Jeffrey E. Post (Distinguished Public Service Medal). Peter J. Wyllie was awarded the Roebling Medal, the Society’s highest honor, in rec- ognition of lifetime scientific achievement. Peter Wyllie graduated from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland with degrees in geology and phys- ics. He was awarded the Polar Medal for his work as assistant geologist and dogsled driver with the British North Greenland expedition in 1952–1954. A research assis- tantship with O.F. Tuttle at Penn State followed. He has taught at Leeds University (1959–1961), Penn State (1961–1965), the University of Chicago (1965–1983) and the California Institute of Technol- ogy (1983–1999), with terms as chairman at Chicago and Caltech. The focus of his re- search program has been the experimental petrology of magmas and volatile compo- nents, using whole rocks and parallel mineral systems to elu- cidate and constrain processes, which has led to the publica- tion of more than 300 scien- tific articles. The rock types investigated include granites, andesites, kimberlites, and carbonatites. Dr. Wyllie’s hon- ors include the MSA Award and election as fellow or for- eign member to seven national science academies. The eighty-second annual awards luncheonof the Mineralogical

Society of America was heldon November 6, 2001, duringthe 2001 Geological Society ofAmerica meeting in Boston,Massachusetts. Medallistswere Peter J. Wyllie (RoeblingMedal), Peter C. Burns (MSAAward), and Jeffrey E. Post(Distinguished Public ServiceMedal).

Peter J. Wyllie was awardedthe Roebling Medal, theSociety’s highest honor, in rec-ognition of lifetime scientificachievement. Peter Wylliegraduated from the Universityof St. Andrews, Scotland withdegrees in geology and phys-ics. He was awarded the PolarMedal for his work as assistantgeologist and dogsled driverwith the British NorthGreenland expedition in1952–1954. A research assis-tantship with O.F. Letter from the President

As I begin my year as presi-dent of the Mineralogical So-ciety of America, I can reportthat the Society has an activeand distinguished member-ship that is involved in awide variety of importantactivities. These efforts havea solid financial base. Ourglass does not runneth over,but it is more than half full.

The greatest asset of theSociety is its people. The af-fairs of the Society and itsheadquarters staff are guidedby an Executive Director,Alex Speer, who has a re-markable knowledge of thehistory and details of theSociety’s programs and aManaging Editor, RachelRussell, who supervises the

increasingly efficient pro-duction of the AmericanMineralogist. Bob Dymekand Lee Groat bring expe-rience and enthusiasm totheir job as Editors of theAmerican Mineralogist. Dur-ing 2002, two special themeissue issues will honorMichael Holdaway andRobert C. Reynolds. PaulRibbe continues as the se-ries editor for the Reviews inMineralogy & Geochemis-try. At least five RIMG vol-umes are anticipated forpublication during 2002.The new vice-president,Doug Rumble, will also as-sume the position of Publi-cations Director and specialattention will be focused on

issues related to electronicpublications. The Secretary,Dave Jenkins, and Trea-surer, Jim Blencoe, willcontinue to serve the Soci-ety. The Council, with itstwo new members, PeterHeaney and Nancy Ross, isoperating efficiently and isfocusing its attention on themajor issues confronting theSociety. The Financial Advi-sory Committee, chaired byStephen Huebner, has de-veloped an explicit state-ment of the responsibilitiesof the Committee that shouldinsure both the growth andstability of the endowedfunds. The Society’s web-site continues to expand anddevelop, in October there

were 138,000 hits, thanks tothe constant attention ofGordon Nord. The web-siteincludes important new ad-ditions for outreach, fundedin part by the NSF. An im-portant addition has been theaddition of “Mineralogy 4-Kids” developed by the K-12 Outreach Coordinator,Nancy McMillan. The web-site also includes the CrystalStructure Database managedby Bob Downs and PaulHeese. Check out theCollector’s Corner maintainedby David Von Bargen withselected articles from the past85 years in the AmericanMineralogist or the on-lineversion of the Handbook ofMinerals Vol. II – Silicates,

The Lattice is published quarterly (February, May, Au-gust, November) by the Mineralogical Society of America.It is distributed to MSA members and subscribers as aservice. Articles and letters are welcome.

The Mineralogical Society of America is composed ofindividuals interested in mineralogy, crystallography, andpetrology. Founded in 1919, the Society promotes, througheducation and research, the understanding and applica-tion of mineralogy by industry, universities, governmentand the public.

made available by Dick Bideaux. The MSA Lecture Pro-gram, coordinated by Helen Lang, has been expanded toinclude tours outside of North America. The reviews of thisprogram by the lecturers and hosts were unanimously posi-tive, and during the next year three lecturers, Bob Bodnar,Roberta Rudnick and Catherine McCammon, will visit35 institutions. In summary, the Society is benefiting fromthe efforts of its dedicated members who serve at every level.We have superb people at every skill position many of whomI have not named. The efforts of our members account forthe quality and number of our publications, the solid finan-cial base, and an extensive array of services to the mineral-ogical and geoscience communities. Finally, the membershiphas increased to just over 2100 members, still less than 1995levels, but reversing the trend of recent declines.

All of this said, I think that it is my responsibility to focusduring the next year on that part of the glass that is remainsempty—the unrealized potential. During the next few yearsthe Society will be faced with important challenges that willdetermine our long-term success. These challenges include:

1. What will be the impact of electronic media on our pub-lications? How will the Society preserve the quality of it pub-lications and produce them in a competitive market?

2. What are the long-term prospects for increased member-ship? The recent increase by several hundred members is en-couraging; however, over half of the increase is from studentmemberships. In addition, most of the growth in membershipover the last decade has come from outside of North America.In North America, there has been a substantial decrease (ap-proximately 500) in the number of regular members.

3. How will we interact with other Societies in arrangingmeetings and related publications? The recent GoldschmidtConference that was co-sponsored with the Geochemical So-ciety was a tremendous success. In the future we will continueto have our joint meetings with the GSA and AGU, and we arealso planning our Spring 2003 meeting with the Clay MineralsSociety. Are there other societies in materials and environmen-tal science communities that should be included? We need toinsure that the combinations of cosponsored meetings satisfythe needs and interests of our members.

4. Finally, there is increasing concern that the disciplineof “mineralogy” is perceived as less relevant to rapidlychanging curricula in geoscience departments. We com-monly bemoan the loss of familiar courses and old skills,such as optical mineralogy. Can we, as mineralogists, growand expand with these inevitable changes?

On the last point, I want to simply declare that mineral-ogy is an increasingly relevant field, destined to grow inimportance. However, we will have to broaden the defini-tion of what mineralogists do. We need to realize that min-eralogists are making important contributions in materialsscience, environmental science, and the life sciences. Weneed to get this message to our colleagues and, most impor-tantly, to students. During the past twenty-five years we havebeen the seed of new sub-disciplines, such clay mineralogy,geochemistry and mineral physics. I believe that we mustfind mechanisms to reclaim these sub-disciplines as part ofthe broader discipline of mineral sciences. ■

Notes from Washington

• MSA 2002 membership renewals were mailed in lateOctober 2001. If you have not renewed your MSA member-ship, and not received a paper notice by time you read this,please contact the Business Office. MSA sent a notice aboutonline membership renewal on the afternoon of 9/10/2001to 1562 e-mail addresses (about 73% of MSA membership).Members were asked to renew online before 10/01/2001 ifthey wished to use this method. It was not the most auspi-cious of timing. A reminder was sent on 9/21/2001. By 09/28/2001 about 310 members had renewed online. The lownumber is attributed to the timing of the first notice, but it isa bit better than last year for the same time frame. We ex-pect to receive more online renewals once members beginreceiving their paper notices. Senior and life members andfellows were also sent renewal notices. They need not re-new. They were sent notices because this seems the bestway to prompt an update of their membership information,particularly mailing addresses. You can save your Societymoney by renewing early, whether you chose to do so onlineor with the traditional paper version mailed to you, and bytelling us about changes in your mail or e-mail address.

At least in the first group of 310 renewals, most mem-bers subscribed to the paper American Mineralogist thatcomes with electronic access (213), and many fewer justthe electronic access (45). Preliminary indications are thatmany of those signing up for electronic access only previ-ously did not subscribe to the journal. At least among thisearly group there are a higher percentage of members re-ceiving the journal in some form than last year.

There were a few problems reported to us with the elec-tronic renewal. The largest problem was members identify-ing themselves to the database. These were solved bysearching on just their last name, or city alone. This sametrick applies to MSA online searchable database, in caseyou encounter the same problem there. Most simply askedthe Business Office for their member ID number. Othershad problems with their browser or server set-up. These werethe most difficult problems to solve, if they could be. Sev-eral members wrote to say that they do not trust electroniccommerce or that their institutions require original hardcopydues invoices. There is also a problem of timing. Memberswho renewed online between the time we printed the paperrenewal notices and the time they received it in the mailoften felt we had made a mistake in their renewal. This is aproblem inherent in using two renewal formats.

• You have read or heard about anthrax-bearing letters atthe Brentwood Post Office in Washington. It is MSA’s PostOffice. There were several days of mail interruption afterOctober 19, but within the week our normal mail serviceresumed. Since then there has been much more security sur-

rounding all shippers, with the expectation that higher costswill be inevitable. However, mail that was in the BrentwoodPost Office on October 20-21 has been sequestered and, asfar as we know, is still there with plans for decontaminationor destruction. Given the timing, little MSA mail should beaffected. But it will be some time before we will discoverwhat, if anything, was sequestered.

• In this issue of The Lattice there is an announcement ofthe 2003 Grant for Research in Crystallography from theEdward H. Kraus Crystallographic Research Fund and the2003 MSA Grant for Student Research in Mineralogy andPetrology Research from an endowment created by contri-butions from the MSA membership. Council had increasedthe amount of the grants to $5000 starting in 2002. Thisought to be a more attractive sum than the earlier $3500,and enough to make an impact on some research. This waspossible because of the continued generous contributionsfrom MSA members and the healthy investment climate ofthe last three to four years. For the 2002 grants there were38 applicants. Only three could be funded, though manymore were deserving.

• MSA generally does its membership figures for the yearjust before renewal notices for the next year are received.There was a pleasant surprise this year. MSA had moremembers than last, and the highest number since 1996. Thereappears to be a halt in declining membership figures thatbegan in the early 1980s, and perhaps an increase. Worri-some is the continuing decline in institutional subscriptionsto the journal. Much of the loss here is in non-US addressinstitutions, most likely the result of the strong US dollar.

Secretary’s report to the 82nd MSA Business meeting

The 82nd annual business meeting of the Mineralogi-cal Society of America was held on November 6,2001, at 5:00 PM in the Hynes Convention Center,

Boston, Massachusetts. What follows is a brief overview ofthe main actions taken by the council and executive commit-tee, society election results, and other actions since the lastbusiness meeting.

MEMBERSHIP

As of Sept 10th the total membership of the society stands at2137. This represents a significant increase (nearly 10%) inmembership and contrasts sharply with the steady decline thathas been occurring in recent years. Society membership in-creased in almost all catego-ries but the largest was instudent members (50% in-crease). This may be the re-sult of the $5 (no-journal)student membership categorythat was instigated last year,but it is also the result of theefforts of at least one councilmember who gives new stu-dents no excuse not to joinMSA. I encourage all of us toextend an invitation to stu-dents to join in the activitiesof our society. On-line mem-bership renewal appears to bean option that is used by an increasing number of members.Early renewals not only save the business office time and ef-fort by not having to send out renewal notices, but you aregiven a $5 discount on your renew before December 31.

The total number of institutional subscriptions continues todecline each year, with equal losses in both the domestic andforeign categories this year.

Details on nomi-nating undergraduates can be found on the MSA website.

SHORT COURSES

This is a banner year for short courses.Molecular Modeling Theory and Applications in the Geo-

sciences which was co-sponsored with the Geochemical Soci-ety, was held on May 18-20 at Roanoke, Virginia, prior to theGoldschmidt Conference held in Hot Springs, Virginia. Theconveners were Randy Cygan and Jim Kubicki. There were75 participants (17 students and 58 professionals). The ac-companying book is RiMG Vol. 42.

Stable Isotope Geochemistry was just held on Nov. 2–4 priorto this GSA meeting in the Colonnade Hotel, in Boston, Mas-sachusetts. The conveners were John W. Valley and David R.Cole. At total of 80 participants attended the short course andthe accompanying book, RiMG Vol 43 is now available forsale by the MSA business office.

The big news forAmerican Mineralo-gist, from this year’s

November 4 MSA Councilmeeting, is the approval ofAllenTrack, a web-basedsubmission and peer reviewsystem. With such a system,manuscripts can be submit-ted by uploading them viathe World Wide Web. Then,the associate editors (AEs)and reviewers access the pa-per via the web, and the edi-tors and staff have a muchgreater ability to keep trackof the status of papers. AEs,editors, and reviewers can allwork wherever they havecomputer access. The com-puter tracks the dates re-ceived, so the AEs will nolonger need to, and the com-puter can even send variousreminders out automatically!An advantage for the authorsis that once they have loggedin one paper, the computerwill remember their addressand other data for subse-quent submissions.

I spent considerable timethis year investigating web-based submission and re-view systems, both by usingdemos, and by talking to cur-rent users and vendors. In theend, AllenTrack is the soft-ware I recommended formany reasons. One reason isbecause Allen Press, whomwe know and trust as ourprinter, will be the applica-tion service provider. An-other is that AllenTrack isvery easy to use and learn,while at the same time be-ing very flexible. It can becustomized for MSA’s spe-cific needs. In addition, theGeological Society ofAmerica is already leadingthe way. They have been us-ing AllenTrack for several

months for Geology and theBulletin. AGU is using thesame program, created by e-Science Journals, for theirpublications. Thus it makessense for earth scientists tobe able to learn one basicinterface (although eachjournal is obviously a littledifferent). It also makessense that each journal canlearn from one another andimprovements for one couldbe improvements for all.

Planning, personalizing,and testing of this systemshall start early next year,with the target for going“live” – that is, open to au-thors to actually submit pa-pers via the web – beingearly April 2002.

The most common ques-tion I heard from AssociateEditors at the annual AELuncheon was how wouldreviewers indicate specificedits to sentences when themanuscript is distributed bya web-based system? Thesimplest answer is afterprinting and reviewing themanuscript, the reviewerwill then fax or mail thiscopy to the associate editoras always. The reviewer’sofficial form will be on theweb site and can be directlyfilled out while on line. Afurther possibility is that ofscanning in the version withthe line edits and then up-loading it to AllenTrack.This option might be best forany line edits the associateeditors do for the editors’ at-tention. We can do this scan-ning at the editorial office,but several of the associateeditors at the luncheon feltthey could use the Acrobatprogram to do this them-selves.

Another concern was re-

garding the artwork. To re-view certain halftones, suchas micrographs, the qualityneeds to be fairly high. Aphotocopy is often inad-equate, and a common PDFscan can be inadequate. Withthe web-based system theauthor’s actual file can beuploaded so the qualityshould be represented ex-actly as the author sees it.Related to this concern is theexperience of GSA, which is

The 2001 GoldschmidtConference was a superbmeeting for those interestedin all aspects of mineralstructures research. The ses-sions on mineral structuresand on gem materials spon-sored by our special interestgroup included a range ofexcellent presentations froma healthy mix of students, se-nior researchers, and every-one in between. Thanks toDavid Veblen, Nancy Ross,Peter Heaney and GeorgeHarlow for helping to orga-nize the sessions! Therewere also related sessions onenvironmental mineralogy

and structure modeling, andrelated topics.

At the Goldschmidt Con-ference, approximately 50people attended the meetingof the special interest group,clearly an indication of thehigh level of interest and ac-tivity in mineral structuresresearch. Some items thatcame out of the meetingwere:

(1) MSiG will sponsor amineral structures session atthe 2002 Spring AGU meet-ing in Washington, DC. Pe-ter Burns offered to helporganize the session.

(2) We discussed spon-

soring another workshop ateither the fall GSA or SpringAGU meeting. Possible top-ics include an introduction tothe crystallographic soft-ware on the CCP-14 websiteby Dr. Lachlan Cranswick,or structure solution frompowder diffraction data. Atthe present it appears thatthis might be more feasiblefor the Spring AGU meeting.Please feel free to suggestother topics for workshops,and/or express your thoughtsabout the topics listed. agreed to co-chair our spe-cial interest group.

The information for au-thors on the web site shallcontinue to provide updatesand information about sub-missions. Right now we areaccepting submissions via e-mail at [email protected], especially if the authoruses PDF format. Check outthe specifics on the web!

A final note is that uponacceptance of a paper, aWord (or rtf) version of thetext and tables is still re-quired, as well as print qual-ity artwork files, and weshall still work with authorsto obtain these materials aswe do now. ■

It should be mentioned thatthe US Department of Energyhas graciously directed fund-ing to both MSA and theGeochemical Society to helpdefray the cost of running sixof the short courses (Molecu-lar Modeling, Stable IsotopeGeochemistry, Nanoparticles,Synchrotron Radiation, Phos-phates, and Biominerali-zation). MSA is grateful toDOE for its financial supportof these short courses.

In addition to the shortcourses mentioned above,

there was a Workshop on“Practical Applications ofXRF Techniques to the Analy-sis of Geological Materials”that was held Nov. 5th and 6that the Philips Analytical appli-cation facility in Natick, Mass.The convenors were DaveColer and James Willis. Thesetypes of practical “hands-on”workshops are quite success-ful and appear destined to be-come a regular feature atfuture annual meetings ofGSA, AGU, etc.

PUBLICATIONS

Volume 45 of the Reviewsin Mineralogy and Geochem-istry series titled Natural Zeo-lites edited by Dave Bish andDoug Ming, is nearly com-plete. There is no accompany-ing short-course.

The MSA Website oper-ated during the year 2001with only two hours ofdowntime running on twoApple Macintosh 120 MHz8550 machines. The webserver is Webstar, the cgi isLasso and the database isFileMaker. The current sys-tem is incredibly stable.Even the nimda probes(code-red) have no effect.

The front page has beenredesigned as a portal to fea-ture current events and newfeatures as well as easy linksto all MSA activities as re-quested by Council. Thewebsite has minimal graph-ics to load quickly.

During the year the num-ber of hits has increasedfrom about 100,000 hits permonth to nearly 150,000 hitsper month. The system isnearing its limit and will bereplaced by two AppleMacintosh 867 MHz G4’sthis winter.

Additions to the websitethis year include the “Collec-tors Corner” and “Mineral-ogy 4Kids” along with thepopular “Ask-a-Mineralo-gist”.

About 30% of the activ-ity on the website is due to

spiders and robots. These arethe digital data searchers forthe search engines. Theycome and extract pdfs,htmls, and everything thesite has to offer. They are ourfriends because they indexthe site for inquiring minds.Google.com is at the top ofthe list, usually visiting ev-eryday to update its data-base. In fact Google has suchan intensive scientific data-base that we decided to adda Google presence to thehome page. Google also in-dexes pdfs and does a morecomplete job than our owninternal search engine.

MSA now has the years1997 to 2001 online as ab-stracts and most of the years1998 to 2001 online as Ar-ticles. The remaining monthsof 1998 and the year 1997will be online soon. This willfinish the existing pdf ar-ticles available for access.The most requested pdf isNew Minerals. There is alarge audience out there fornew mineral information.

A log of the month of Oc-tober indicates that∑ 138,000 hits occurred.∑ Mon, Tues and Wed are the

busy days.∑ 9 a.m. to noon EST are thebusy times.∑ Computers from 81 differ-ent countries have accessedthe website.

This is particularly inter-esting because .com is wayahead of .edu. Perhaps MSAis not as academically cen-tered as we think.

Of the search engines“Google” has visited themost times: 11,000 hits.

Of the types of filesdownloaded, 35% werehtml, 28% were gifs, and17% pdfs. This indicates thatpdfs are very popular.

The most requested pagewas the home page, followedby the American Mineralo-

gist pages, followed by Ask-A-Mineralogist, followed byCollectors Corner and fol-lowed by Mineralogy 4Kids. Note that Mineralogy4Kids has recently under-gone considerable changesand it should be the mostpopular area in the futurewith a bit of advertising.

The top browsers visitingour website are various ver-sions of Internet Explorerand various versions of Win-dows. Macs and Netscapeare only a few percent of thevisiting browsers and oper-ating systems. I try to designfor all browsers and cur-rently design for 15" moni-tors.

The top referrers areGoogle, Yahoo, Altavista,and MSN.

Last year the Councilvoted to place the AmericanMineralogist articles online.There were approximately680 articles available fordownload from the years1998 to 2001. The report onthis activity follows.

During the year article-downloads were identifiedby member ID. 430 uniquemembers used the electronicdownload. This is about 20%of the membership. Approxi-mately 3000 attempts weremade to download articlesbut only 1500 of these were

successful for a variety ofreasons. If a member hadtrouble and contacted thebusiness office we workedwith them to resolve theproblem. All known problemswere corrected. Usually it was

a browser problem but occa-sionally it was a path problem.In any case all problems wereresolved. I am guessing therest of the problems were con-nection problems, brokenlinks, and such. Commonly

the next attempt was suc-cessful.

In summary the member-only download of articleshas been successful and willbe continued into the nextyear with the following

change. Articles from 2000back will be available free-to-download on Jan.2002and the articles from 2001back would be availablefree-to-download onJan.2003 and so forth. ■

to Jeffrey E. Post for his work as lead curator of the Smithsonian’snew permanent exhibition “Geology, Gems and Minerals.”This beautiful exhibit is also one of the museum’s most popu-lar, visited by 7 to 8 million people annually. Jeffrey Postattended the University of Wisconsin–Platteville and ob-tained a B.S. in Geology and Chemistry in 1976. He earnedhis Ph.D. in chemistry, with a specialty in geochemistry,with Peter Buseck at Arizona State University in 1981. Hewas a post-doctoral fellow at Harvard from 1982 to 1984,where he studied theoretical modeling of mineral structureswith Charles Burnham. He joined the Department of Min-eral Sciences at the Museum of Natural History, SmithsonianInstitution in 1984 and was department chair from 1989 to1994. He has served as the Curator of the National Gem andMineral Collection since 1991. Dr. Post’s current researchinterests include single-crystal and synchrotron-powder X-ray diffraction studies of the structures, dehydration, and ex-change behaviors of manganese and iron oxide and clayminerals. Peter Heaney, as citationist, highlighted the posi-tive reviews of the Smithsonian exhibit and the influence ofthis exhibit in conveying the wonders of minerals and thenatural world to millions of people.

Peter C. Burns received the Mineralogical Society ofAmerica Award for outstanding research early in one’s re-search career. Peter C. Burns was born in 1966 in NewBrunswick, Canada. He graduated from the University of

Synchrotron Radiation: Earth, Environmental and MaterialsSciences Applications

THE short course will present what synchrotron radiation is, what the latesttechniques are, what types of Earth, environmental and materials scienceproblems can be investigated using synchrotron techniques, what the

Canadian Light Source can do, how one gains access to the CLS and othersources, and how data are reduced and analyzed for specific techniques.

Most of the material will be at a level of understanding for most upper undergrad-uate and graduate students although recent results and ideas presented through-out the lectures will appeal to both pure andapplied researchers working on Earth, envi-ronmental and materials sciences. The pre-sentations of the first day (90-minutelectures) will be broad overviews ofvarious aspects of synchrotronresearch. The second day will bededicated to more specific applica-

tions, and some of the lecturers will gothrough the reduction and analysis of real rawdata with the audience (where appropriate).On the afternoon of the second day, there will be atour of the Canadian Light Source. A symposium onAPPLICATIONS OF SYNCHROTRON LIGHT SOURCES TOTHE EARTH SCIENCES will also be held during the GAC-MAC meet-ing. Both oral and poster presentations are welcome.

New Brunswick with a B.Sc. (first class honors) in geologyin 1988 and from the University of Western Ontario with aM.Sc. in geology in 1990. He continued his graduate workat the University of Manitoba, and received a Ph.D. in 1994.His dissertation concerned theoretical aspects of the crystalchemistry of copper oxysalt minerals, and he was advisedby Frank C. Hawthorne. In 1994 he was awarded a NationalSciences and Engineering Council of Canada PostdoctoralFellowship, which he used to conduct research in mineralphase transitions at Cambridge University from 1994 to1995, and then in the mineralogy of uranium at the Univer-sity of New Mexico from 1995 to 1996. He was a visitingassistant professor at the University of Illinois-Urbana from1996 to 1997. He became an assistant professor of geologyat the University of Notre Dame in 1997, was promoted toAssociate Professor in 1999, and became the Henry Masman

A special gift was awarded to Anne Hofmeister for herservice as co-editor of the American Mineralogist.

A special guest at the 2001 luncheon was RobertReynolds, the 2000 Roebling Medallist, who was not ableto attend last year. He expressed his thanks for this honorvia Kase Klein but did not wish to speak. Dr. Reynolds’citation is published in Volume 16, no. 4 of The Lattice.

Finally, Kase Klein passed the gavel of the MSA presi-dency to Rod Ewing, who then closed the 2001 MSA Awardsluncheon. ■

WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT

The MSA website has undergone a number of importantdevelopments this year. First, the K-12 Outreach Committeehas developed the “Mineralogy 4 Kids” link which has infor-mation on the rock cycle, mineral properties, and other grade-specific information about minerals. Many thanks go to NancyMcMillan for heading up this effort. Nancy is currently askingpeople to send photos and descriptions of field localities toestablish “virtual” field trips on the web. Second, the “Collec-tors Corner” has been developed by David Von Bargen spe-cifically for mineral collectors. The Grant for Research in Crystallography is a US$5000 grant. There are no restrictions on how thegrant funds may be spent, as long as they are used in support of research. The only restrictions on eligibility for thegrant are that the applicant must have reached his or her 25th birthday but not yet have reached his or her 36thbirthday on the date the grant is given, and that the person is not a MSA Counselor.

MSA Grants for Student Research in Mineralogy and Petrology comprise two US$5000 grants.Students, including graduate and undergraduate students, are encouraged to apply. There are no restrictions on how thegrant funds may be spent, as long as they are used in support of research.

Selection will be based on the qualifications of the applicant, the quality,innovativeness, and scientific significance of the research, and the likelihood of successof the project. Grants will be made in January 2003. There are no restrictions on howthe grant funds may be spent, as long as they are used in support of research. The 2001 short courses were Stable Isotope Geochemistryshort course (organized at GSA by John W. Valley and DavidR. Cole) with 80 participants and Nanoparticles in the Envi-ronment and Technology (organized by Jill Banfield and AlexNavrotsky before Fall AGU) with 89 participants as of mid-November. MSA’s third workshop on Practical Application ofXRF Techniques to the Analysis of Geological Materials (atGSA) had 24 participants. This was a sufficiently large turnoutso that an additional session had to be organized. Dave Coler(Philips) and James Willis (retired, University of Capetown)were the organizers. There will likely be a fourth Workshopsponsored by MSA’s Mineral Structures Interest Group at theSpring AGU meeting.

• MSA Council will have its Spring 2002 Council Meetingand the presentation of the 2002 Dana Medal to MichaelHochella at the 2002 Spring AGU Meeting in Washington, DC.Presently the technical sessions will run from Tuesday May28, 2002 through Saturday, June 1, 2002. You will be receivingmore information from AGU about this meeting in the imme-diate future.

• MSA received the American Mineralogist collections ofClifford Frondel, Barbara Ransom, and W.J. Croft. These con-tained a fair number of unbound copies of the earliest issues.Unbound sets are easier to copy for MSA’s document deliveryservice, and, more importantly, unbound originals may beneeded to produce an electronic version of the entire run ofAmerican Mineralogist. MSA now has unbound copies of allissues starting with volume 7 (1922), though some show thetell-tale signs of chemical blowpipe analysis stains and a slightodor of immersion oils and need to be replaced if better copiessurface. We have only a scattering of issues in volumes 1–6. Ifyou have any of these earliest issues, even single issues, andwould like to find them a home, let us know.

Banfield and A. Navrotsky, and Volume 45 Natu-ral Zeolites: occurrence, properties, application edited by D.Bish and D. Ming. The RIMG volume accompanied the Trans-formation Processes in Minerals short course in Cambridge,England was reviewed by Mark D. Welch in Canadian Miner-alogist 39, 215. • MSA is an Associated Society of GSA. Starting in 2000,GSA has attempted to strengthen its relationships with its as-sociated societies. The Associated Societies are an integral partof GSA’s overall scientific and disciplinary breadth and ac-tively participate in the Annual Meeting program or collabo-rate with GSA in other substantial ways such as in co-publishing.Associated Societies are entitled to equivalent participation,rights, and privileges as a GSA Division. MSA is representedon several GSA Working Groups of the Associated Societies(Publications, Global, Outreach) newly established to identifycommon concerns. More recently, GSA asked MSA to be partof a task force that is considering the possibility of a consor-tium of geoscience societies that would aggregate to electroni-cally publish and market their journals, books, etc.

• The Mineralogical Society of America Dana Medal wasnamed in honor of James Dwight Dana (1813–1895) and Ed-ward Salisbury Dana (1849–1935). E.S. Dana was HonoraryMSA President from 1926–1935, and MSA has a picture ofhim from the journal that we use in descriptions of the award.We do not have a picture of J.D. Dana and would appreciateinformation about a source of a non-copyrighted portrait ofhim. ■
