What is a procedure?

A procedure is something we “do”.

This is not a rule. It is a routine.

Page 5: MS. WILE’S CLASSROOM PROCEDURES MATER LAKES: ENGLISH I August 2014

Why do we have procedures?

Examples:

Page 6: MS. WILE’S CLASSROOM PROCEDURES MATER LAKES: ENGLISH I August 2014

Answer:

Procedures help us stay orderly and efficient in our environment so that we are not wasting time or causing chaos.

We will be rehearsing our procedures.

Each student will be quizzed on our procedures.

Procedures in detail

This information will appear on your quizzes in one week. Use your handouts as study guides.

Social time is for the hallway. If you do not enter silently, you will be asked to leave the classroom and re-enter in the appropriate manner.

Entering Ms. Wile’s Classroom

I AM NOT AVAILABLE FOR QUESTIONS WHEN YOU FIRST WALK INTO THE CLASSROOM. All homework questions should be asked when the

work is assigned or over email. If you need to go to the restroom, it is your

responsibility to judge how much time you have. Do not ask me if you have time. You are old enough. Use a watch.

IF YOU ARE TARDY, THERE ARE NO EXCUSES THAT WILL BE ACCEPTED. This includes teacher notes. I will not be keeping you after class, and I expect your other teachers to give me the same courtesy. Meet them on your time. Not mine.

The Start of Class

Take out your English 1 folder. Place completed HW in the box

representing your class. This will always be next to the door.

Place your folder back in your backpack. If your folder is not in the box within the

first 5 minutes of class (after the bell rings), it will be considered late.

The Start of Class

Pull out a #2 pencil. I expect you to have your own. If you do not have

a pencil, grab a golf pencil from the box next to the homework bin. I expect my pencils returned at the end of class.

Sharpen your pencils at the beginning of class. You will not sharpen during class.

Pull out your composition Mead journal. Open to the “bell ringer” section. Complete the “bell ringer” prompt written on

the board.

Classroom Behavior

When I or a classmate is speaking, you are to be silent and respectful towards the speaker.

When the class is focused and taking notes, you are to be focused on the task at hand. You will NEVER be allowed to go to the restroom

during notes. If you have a question or comment raise

your hand. If I hold up one finger to you, write your question down. I’ll get to you when I can.

Page 14: MS. WILE’S CLASSROOM PROCEDURES MATER LAKES: ENGLISH I August 2014

Pencil Only

I will NOT accept work done in pen. You will be asked to redo the assignment in pencil if you completed it in pen.

Page 15: MS. WILE’S CLASSROOM PROCEDURES MATER LAKES: ENGLISH I August 2014

Getting your attention…

When I need your attention, I’ll count down from 5.

You are to be SILENT by the time I reach 1.

I will take up classwork each week. You are responsible for keeping copies of

your work until I ask for them. You will staple together all classwork

Dismissal

We will ALWAYS work until the bell. Before you leave, you must complete the LEQ

(Lesson Essential Question) on the board. This will be a grade.

Stay seated until I dismiss you. You DO NOT pack your belongings until Ms.

Wile gives the instructions to. If you pack up early, you will spend extra time

with me during your lunch cleaning my desks and doing my filing. You waste my time, and I’ll waste yours.

Day 2

Page 23: MS. WILE’S CLASSROOM PROCEDURES MATER LAKES: ENGLISH I August 2014

Bellringers

Each day you will be given 10 minutes to complete a bellringer. You will find the bellringer on the section of the board labeled “bellringer”.

Bellringers must be a minimum of 10 sentences. Bellringers will be completed in the first section of

your Mead notebooks. Bellringers must ALWAYS be written in complete

sentences. NO EXCEPTIONS. You are in English class. Prove to me you can use

English. If bellringers are not in complete sentences, you will

receive a 50% on the assignment. 50% work deserves a 50% grade.

Page 24: MS. WILE’S CLASSROOM PROCEDURES MATER LAKES: ENGLISH I August 2014

Bellringers

I will grade one bellringer each week. You will not know which bellringer will be

graded. You are expected to try your hardest on each

bellringer. If you don’t finish in class, FINISH AT HOME. If I cannot find a bellringer in your notebook, I

will not grade it. Bellringers are graded for the following

components: Grammar: Complete sentences, spelling Accuracy of content

Page 25: MS. WILE’S CLASSROOM PROCEDURES MATER LAKES: ENGLISH I August 2014

Bellringer:

Make a list from memory of all the procedures learned yesterday.

Homework and Attendance

Everyday, you will have some homework in order to keep your mind fresh.

Homework must be turned in within the first 5 minutes of class each day.

Use the header that will always be on the board.

If you do not have your homework, you will come during lunch to do it. We will not discuss why you don’t have

your homework in class. That will be done on your time.

Page 27: MS. WILE’S CLASSROOM PROCEDURES MATER LAKES: ENGLISH I August 2014

Homework and Attendance

Homework will ALWAYS be on the website.

If homework is not on the website, I will not be collecting it.

If you are absent the day homework is assigned, you will have only 48 hours to complete AND turn it in following the day of your return.

You will find extra copies of homework assignments next to the homework bin each week.

Page 28: MS. WILE’S CLASSROOM PROCEDURES MATER LAKES: ENGLISH I August 2014

Exit Slips- LEQs

An LEQ is a “lesson essential question”. You will ALWAYS hear the answer in the lesson

of the day. You must write both the question and the

answer. LEQs go in section 2 of your notebooks. Each LEQ will be numbered. Write the # in the top right corner of your LEQ. If I cannot find an LEQ answer, I will not grade

it. I will grade LEQs at the end of each 10 entries.

Page 29: MS. WILE’S CLASSROOM PROCEDURES MATER LAKES: ENGLISH I August 2014

Finishing work early:

If you finish work early, follow these steps: Check your work. Raise your hand and ask me to grade it. I will grade it on the spot. You will be given “challenge work”. This is a

more difficult assignment that can later be credited to you as extra credit when finished.

Each completed challenge assignment can replace your lowest classwork grade.

Turn in challenge work to the challenge work bin.

Bathroom

Go before/after school, during lunch, or between classes.

IF you have to go during class, you may only go during independent work time.

If you need to go to the bathroom, raise your hand to ask. I’ll let you know when you can go.

You will be given 4 bathroom passes each quarter.

Before going to the bathroom, fill out the pass with your name, the date, and the time you are leaving.

Page 32: MS. WILE’S CLASSROOM PROCEDURES MATER LAKES: ENGLISH I August 2014

Bathroom

Upon return, DO NOT THROW AWAY THE PASS!

Give me the pass. I will fill out the time of your return. I will put the pass in your folder. I will not allow you to go to the bathroom if

you’ve used all four passes. If you run out of passes, ask a classmate if

you can use one of theirs. It is your responsibility to pay them back or not.

Page 33: MS. WILE’S CLASSROOM PROCEDURES MATER LAKES: ENGLISH I August 2014

Food and Drink

No food or sugary drinks are allowed in the classroom.

Water is allowed. If I see food (wrapped or unwrapped), it

will go into the trash. I hate roaches. You will kill all insects that

your food attracts.
