The students will complete the Summer Reading Bingo grid. Please have a parent initial the square
as you complete the assignment. Don’t forget you need to complete the task in each square to black-
out your bingo card! I would also like for you to take a fun picture of yourself reading over the
sumer. We will display these photos in our classroom so be creative!

Your book must consist of 12 symbols. In addition to illustrating the symbol, include a paragraph for
each explaining its importance in the novel and why you chose it. The paragraph may be typed or
neatly hand written. Your book should consist of 12 individual pages or 6 pages front and back.
Dimensions of your book should be no larger than 8" x 11".
Create an attractive cover that includes your full name, grade level, and title and author of the
novel.
Required symbols: At least one symbol must represent the setting (time and place); at least
one symbol must represent the main character; at least one symbol must represent the conflict or
problem; other symbols are your choice.

Summer Reading for 2016
8th Grade - Due the 1st day of school
Choose TWO from the list to read. At least one of your choices must be #1, #2, or #3:
1. The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank
2. Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass by Frederick Douglass
3. Night by Elie Wiesel
4. My Brother Sam is Dead by Christopher Collier and James Lincoln Collier

subject of the autobiography. Answer the questions (in first person) based on the personality of the
main character/subject. Questions and answers must be well-written sentences that illustrate an un-
derstanding of character. Please type your questions/answers using Times New Roman, 12 pt.
font. Place the title and author at the top of the page. You must include a MINIMUM of 10 ques-
tions/answers for each book. Grades will be based on how well the character/subject is represented
in the questions and answers.
*NOTES:
--If you read Little Women, choose one of the main characters
--The main character of The Call of the Wild is a dog, so you will need to be creative with your
questions and how you answer.
Assignment #2: Complete the assigned discussion questions and/or worksheets for each book.
Please type your responses on a separate document. Be sure that you are thorough in your re-
sponses and cite passages from the text as evidence for your answers. Your grade will be based on
