DAILY CLASS ROUTINE

CELLS

Cells are the basic units of function in all living things.

Cells in animals and plants have unique forms that allow each to take part in processes that are necessary for the cell and or/living thing to survive.

“Small organ”

Carry out tasks for cell Brings in food suppliesGet rid of wasteRepair the cell

WHAT IS AN ORGANELLE?

ANIMAL CELL ORGANELLES

Function: Holds the cell together and lets substances in and out (Semi-permeable)

Outer Layer of cell

CELL MEMBRANE “The Bouncer”

Function: Holds organelles in place

Jellylike substance in the cell

Made mostly of water

CYTOPLASM

Function: DNA is stored or held

Directs cell’s activities

Nucleolus: dark spot in the middle of the nucleus that help make ribosomes

NUCLEUS “The Brain or the Boss”

Function: Energy formation Breaks down food to make ATP

ATP: major fuel for all cell activities that require energy

MITOCHONDRION “The Power House”

Function: Makes protein

Can be on Endoplasmic Reticulum or free in cytoplasm

RIBOSOMES “Builders/Workers”

Function: Processing and packaging center

Packages macromolecules, like protein and lipids as they are made in the cell To be packaged & storedUsed to send them out of the cell

GOLGI APPARATUS “UPS”

ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM “Roads”

Function: A membrane system of canals and tunnels that transport materials

Rough ER: covered with ribosomesSmooth ER: pathway for molecules to move throughout the cell

Functions:

1. breaks down food

2. destroys old or worn out cell parts

3. Engulfs viruses or bacteria

LYSOSOME “Garbage Can”

So, what’s different about plant and animal cells?

PLANT CELL ORGANELLES

Function: Gives the cell a rigid shape (Structure and Support)

Outer layer of plant cells

CELL WALL “Protector”

Contain chlorophyll, a green chemical needed for photosynthesis. Turns energy from the sun into nutrients

(food)

CHLOROPLASTS

Function: Stores waste, water, and food

Plant cell Vacuoles are bigger than those in animal cells!

Vacuole “Storage Tank”
