With great joy, it is my honor to welcome you to the first ever Biomedical Engineering Western Regional Conference (Biomedical West Conference). This is an exciting time for biomedical engineering and every attendee at this conference represents the wonderful opportunity we have to help our fellow man through improving human health. It has been a long journey to prepare this conference with the goal to inspire creativity and innovate together. The research shared at this conference will change lives and lay the ground work to improve healthcare in the coming months, years, and decades. It is a great privilege, and responsibility, to improve human lives, and even save them. I sincerely hope that every member of this conference will take this great opportunity to learn and then go out to improve the world in their own respective sphere. We are very pleased that we will have over 50 technical abstracts from 11 different institutions across 5 states presented over the next 2 days. Our intent has been to make this a truly student-focused event and to encourage cross-pollination of the exciting research that has been taking place in the West over the last several decades.

We hope that you will feel very welcome at this year’s host institution, Brigham Young University, and that you find an opportunity to enjoy the beautiful surrounding terrain. DISTINGUISHED KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Ken Monson received BS and MS degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Brigham Young University in 1995 and 1997, respectively, and a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2001, also in Mechanical Engineering. He worked first as a post-doc and ultimately as a research professor in Neurological Surgery at the Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Center at the University of California, San Francisco, between 2001 and 2008. In 2008, he joined the Mechanical Engineering department at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. Monson has been involved in research on traumatic brain injury (TBI), with particular consideration for the cerebrovasculature, for nearly 20 years. His training and research have focused primarily on experimental approaches to studying the problem. This has included extensive characterization of the mechanical and failure properties of human cerebral blood vessels and has extended into developing a better understanding of vessel damage resulting from TBI. Most of this work is accomplished through in vitro study of isolated blood vessels and using a variety of animal models. Computational modeling and immunohistochemistry are also utilized to interpret and evaluate results from experiments.

Buddy Ratner is a professor of chemical engineering and bioengineering. He is the director of the Research Center for Biomaterials at the University of Washington Ratner. He earned a BS degree in Chemistry from Brooklyn College. Five years later, he earned his PhD from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn with a thesis in the field of polymer chemistry. He became an Associate Professor in 1984. From 1985 to 1996 he was director of the National ESCA and Surface Analysis Center for Biomedical Problems (NESAC / BIO), a research and service facility for surface analysis at the University of Washington. His research interests include the synthesis, modification and characterization of material surfaces for medical applications, Tissue Engineering and its application in the field of regenerative medicine. He is co-author of over 300 scientific publications. The International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering, the World Federation of Societies for biomaterial science, awarded him the title of 1996 Fellow of Biomaterials Science and Engineering. In 2002 he was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering.

Ben Noe is an R&D program manager in Medtronic’s MITG, Advanced Energy business in Boulder, CO. In his role, Ben leads a collection of R&D projects and commercialization efforts for the Valleylab FT10 electrosurgical energy platform. He is also an involved member of the Biomedical Engineering Society at the national level, serving terms on the Board of Directors as well as Chairmanships of both the Industry Committee and Medical Devices Special Interest Group. Ben also is a member of seven additional national BMES committees, including the Finance Committee, Long Range Strategic Planning Committee, National Meetings Committee, 50th Anniversary Committee, Coulter College Committee, the Development Committee, and the Membership Committee. In addition to BMES, Ben serves as a member of Wichita State University’s Biomedical Engineering Advisory Board and as Chairman of the Young Professionals Board for Project C.U.R.E. Ben holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Colorado-Boulder and is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP).

Shankar Subramaniam is a Professor of Bioengineering, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Medicine and Nano Engineering. He is currently the Chair of the Bioengineering Department at the University of California at San Diego. He holds the inaugural Joan and Irwin Jacobs Endowed Chair in Bioengineering and Systems Biology. He was the Founding Director of the Bioinformatics Graduate Program at the University of California at San Diego. He also has adjunct Professorships at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies and the San Diego Supercomputer Center. He is also a Guest Professor at the Center for Molecular Biology and Neuroscience at the University of Oslo in Norway and Professor at the Center for Cardiovascular Bioinformatics and Modeling at Johns Hopkins University. Prior to moving to UC San Diego, Dr. Subramaniam was a Professor of Biophysics, Biochemistry, Molecular and Integrative Physiology, Chemical Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). He is a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) and is a recipient of Smithsonian Foundation and Association of Laboratory Automation Awards. His research spans several areas of bioinformatics and systems biology.

Professor William G. Pitt joined the Chemical Engineering faculty at BYU in 1987 after receiving a PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Since then he has supervised $4.3 million in research funds, serving as advisor to 36 graduate students. Dr. Pitt is noted for research in the areas of polymeric biomedical materials and drug delivery, ultrasonically triggered drug delivery, which may permit delivery of chemotherapeutic drugs to the sites of cancerous tumor without affecting the rest of the body. His recent activity is in separating bacteria from blood. His creativity is evidenced by his 8 patents and 141 peer-reviewed journal articles, which have been cited over 3,100 times.

17 years working in the Medical Device Industry. Dr. Cook graduated from BYU with BS and MS degrees in Chemical Engineering, and later received his PhD from MIT, also in Chemical Engineering, with an emphasis on engineering applications in medicine. His industry experience was in business development and research and development of Tissue Engineering and Medical Devices, primarily in the fields of Cardiovascular, Ophthalmic and Orthopedic Products. His previous employers include Semprus BioSciences (Teleflex), Johnson & Johnson and W.L. Gore & Associates. He is also an author on numerous peer-reviewed publications and an inventor on 4 issued patents. His current research focuses on tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

Marc Hansen earned a PhD in Cancer Biology from Stanford University in 2002. He is currently Associate Professor of Physiology and Developmental Biology at Brigham Young University, where he built and directs the Bio-Innovation and Bio-Entrepreneurship Program. He founded Frost Biologic, Inc, which is advancing a novel gastric cancer treatment to the clinic. He consults for private biotech companies developing novel therapeutics, devices, and diagnostics, as well as with state and local government to develop a fertile environment for the creation and growth of new biotech firms.

Dr. E. David Bell is a New Product Development Quality Engineer at Bard Access Systems, a market leader is vascular access devices. He received his PhD in Bioengineering from the University of Utah in 2015, following a BS in Bioengineering from Lehigh University. His graduate research focused on the mechanics and function of the cerebrovascular and how they are affected by traumatic brain injury. As a NPD QE at Bard, his primary role is to ensure the safety and efficacy of medical devices in development. This is accomplished through mitigation of risks inherent to product design and production, as well as risks inherent to user interaction with said devices.

Anton Bowden’s background and research interests are in spinal biomechanics, biomedical device design, computational biomechanics, and engineering leadership education. He directs the BYU Applied Biomechanics Engineering Laboratory. He received his PhD in Bioengineering from University of Utah and his BS in Mechanical Engineering from Utah State University. He is a licensed professional engineer and a recipient of a National Science Foundation CAREER Award. He is grateful to have been awarded the Weidman Professorship in Leadership and enjoys serving in the Orthopaedic Research Society.

Matthew Rickard, PhDProfessor of BioengineeringCalifornia Baptist University

Dr. Rickard joined California Baptist University in 2010 where he is currently a Professor and Chair of Bioengineering. Previously, he worked as a research engineer for a variety of companies. At Alcon Laboratories, he developed advanced vitreoretinal surgical products and lead research programs for state-of-the-art glaucoma devices. His research current interests include Ocular Engineering, Experimental Research, Teaching / Engineering Education, Fluid Mechanics, Microsystems / MEMS, Glaucoma, Medical Devices, and Electronically-Active Implants. He has published several peer-reviewed journal articles and has also served as a journal referee. He currently holds eleven patents and has three other applications under review.
