Intrigue, Bandits, Cobras AddSpice to Orient's Golf Story

By BOB BALDOCKFresno, Calif., golf architect Bob Baldock

recently toured the Orient where he in-spected a "wild West" site for a new 36hole course in the Philippines which hehas designed and will build for the ManilaG&CC. Here is his report:

Maintenance practices on courses in thePhilippines, Hong Kong and Japan are 30years behind ours, but the game is on sucha bullmarket boom in the Orient that thegap is being closed.

Their courses, thanks to such an abun-dance of cheap labor, are doing wellenough maintenance-wise. It is, however, interesting to note some contrasts with ourmodern courses.

The greens, particularly in Manila, areprimitive by our standards. They werehaphazardly constructed, apparently withlittle thought as to the length of the ap-

Rakes, carts and eight women to do the topdressingis a daily ritual for Tokyo g,olf courses.

proach shot and, for purposes of easydrainage, are built in the manner of in-verted saucers.

Frosting on TopThey are constantly topdressed with

soil heavy on decomposed granite but lighton fertilizer. Thus, over the years, a layerseveral inches thick has been built up -frosting on the saucer tops. This top dress-ing results in a hard packed surface andit's easy to imagine the problems connect-ed with a pitch and run shot.

Some of the Tokyo area courses are so

62

busy the holes have two greens each. Onerecuperates while the other handles thetraffic. Our modern greens practices, par-tieularly the heavier use of fertilizer, would go a long way to correct this situa-tion.

There is quite a story of intrigue in thedurable, heat resistant grasses now usedon the greens in Hong Kong and Manila.Similar to a cross of our bent and Ber-mudas, the grass originally was developedin Cairo, Egypt.

Smuggled StolonThe story goes that a golf minded Eng-

lishman, before World War II, smuggleda single stolon of the Cairo grass into Sing-apore for a golf course there. After it waspropagated there, the same procedure wasrepeated in Hong Kong. In the land wheresmuggling is a fine art, the next step wasto take another stolon of the originalCairo grass to Manila.

So, most of the better greens in theOrient today, outside of Japan, come froma single stolon, spirited half way aroundthe world under the noses of agriculturalauthorities.

Golf in the Manila area has some pe-culiar hazards beyond the control of thedesigner. Banditry is common in the areaof Das Marines where poverty and wealthexist side by side. During our inspectiontour of the property where the course willbe built we were accompanied by guardsfrom the local constabulary, armed withrifles and pistols.

Fight 'Em OffWe didn't see any of the reputed Wild

West element but Allyson Gibbs, the pres.of the club, assured me it was a wise pre-caution since the week before I arrived theDas Marines guards had a pitched gunbattle with two thugs on the site of thecourse.

The solution to some of the Orientalcourses' maintenance problems seems to bein building the courses with long, easycurves, thus reducing the hand mowing.Gang mowers are a rare and expensiveitem. One five unit gang was pointed outto me in Manila, an English made job, which reputedly cost $10,000 - doublebecause of the levying of 100 per centimport duty.

Golfers in the Philippines may not belong hitters, but they have the reputationof being straight down the middle. There'sa good reason they hate to get into therough: Cobras consider the mice, ratsand men their personal delicacies, parti-cularly the latter.

BOOK REVIEWSecrets of Winning Golf Matches, 38

pp, illustrated with drawings. $2. By LonRamsey. Published by Pilot Industries,New York 1, N. Y.

Highly recommended in lieu of a visitto a psychiatrist - its cheaper and youget the same results. Ramsey outlines allthe reasons why you haven't been win-ning golf matches in the past and ex-plains, logically enough, that you shouldconquer your weaknesses and take ad-vantage of inherent weaknesses of youropponents in defeating them on the course. However, he disdains to consider whatevery golf professional has learned throughpainful, although profitable, experience:golf and logic are like oil and water -they do not mix!

Unlike the psychiatrist, Ramsey doesnot attempt to remove the mental blocksinfesting the confused mental makeup ofthe average duffer. He gives the golfercredit for realizing that this must be done

- but how is up to the golfer.Actually, the book is well done as a

compendium of all the mistakes ever com-mitted on the course in losing matches. The average duffer will spend a pleasanthalf hour using the book as a checklistin recalling the horrors of his golfing past, and as a ready made set of New Yearresolutions for his golfing future. Andthen he'll promptly forget the whole thingand sally forth to lose again in his usualexcruciatingly painful style. But now, atleast, he will know why he lost.

New Hole-in-One FinancingPlan at Los Coyotes

Somewhat in self defense, Los CoyotesCC, Buena Park, Calif., has had to puta new rule into effect on Holes-in-One.Present members of the club number 160.When they became certified for member-ship, they had to pay $2.00 into the clubfund. This indemnified them against pay-ing for drinks out of their own pocketwhen they scored the ace, the cost of do-ing this being taken out of the clubtreasury. But where 160 holes-in-one havebeen scored, the odds are that the treasurycan easily and quickly become insolvent.

So, now at Los Coyotes, any time any-one scores an ace, all 160 members ofthe club are going to be assessed $1 tokeep the treasury solvent. What officialsreally are afraid of is that one of thesedays two or even three players may scoreaces on the same day. If that were tohappen and three drinks, for example, doled out to everyone within holleringdistance, the treasury would have to goin for heavier deficit financing than theone in Washington, D. C.

California, Utah Lag inProviding Golf Courses

To keep pace with the populationgrowth in the next 10 years it is estimatedthat the seven Western states will have tohave at least 210 more courses. Even ifthat many are built this area won't beoverwhelmed with golf sites. Nevada andIdaho now have one course for every 19,-000 persons; Arizona, Washington andOregon have one course for about 25,000but Utah and California have only onelayout per 42,000 persons. Nevada andIdaho rank 11th and 12th statewise butUtah and California are near the bottomof the list.

The No.1 state from a golf standpointis Vermont with one course for every 9,750inhabitants. .

One ExplanationGeorge W. Murphy, supt., Tavistock

CC, Haddonfield, N.J., says Jersey greensare slower than those in Philadelphia dis-trict, for example, because Jersey's sandysoil calls for heavier watering.

Watering System(Continued from page 29)

cause wilt, or increase susceptibility todisease.

Heart of the SystemThe pump is the heart of the watering

system. The type of pump you use de-pends entirely on your needs. Pump per-formance characteristics are usually ex-pressed in a curve-graph showing howmuch water can be handled by the pumpwhen it is operating at a given pressure.

What you need to determine about thepump for your system depends on how youintend to use your system. For instance, ifyou intend to operate small sections of thesystem one at a time, the pump you useshould be able to handle varying amountsof water without big jumps in operatingpressure.

Pipe MaterialsThere is a variety of pipe materials for

golf-course watering: plastics, cementasbestos, steel and cast iron. Each has itsown advantages and its own limitations.Your decision on pipe material will bebased on a combination of initial cost, operating costs and economical pipe sizes.By economical pipe sizes is meant the one

pipe size that offers the best overalloperating economy for a prescribed capa-city than any other size pipe, larger orsmaller.

For example, if you select a too small-size pipe to get a low initial cost, you auto-matically increase operating costs becausethe system will require longer to applythe recommended amount of water. Largerpipe, on the other hand, may save operat-ing cost but will probably increase initialcost.

Golfing GrandmothersAn unusual golf group recently was

formed at Tam O'Shanter CC, OrchardLake, Mich., where Warren Orlick is pro.Qualification for membership? The golfermust be a grandmother.

Considering the average youthful ageof the Tam membership, it took some con-triving to find 16 golf playing grandmas.

These pert golfers meet on the firstTuesday of the month for coffee and notematching on their grandchildren and thenrepair to the course where they play 18holes. There is a prize for low net and an-other prize for a gimmick tournament.Points are accumulated toward a season'sgrand prize.

How did your greens come through the winter of 1958-59?Admittedly, the toughest winter for bent greens was the winter of 1958-59. Hundreds of golfcourses had some, if not practically all, of their greens heavily damaged- by so-called"winter kill."

With over 400 golf courses having from one, to all greens, planted to Old Orchard C-52, wewere trying to find out if any of these greens were damaged. We invite any golf coursesuperintendents with Old Orchard C-52 greens that suffered damage during the 1958-59winter to write us.

Visual Merchandising'(Continued from page 36)

tant appear, is every leading make of golfclubs. All clubs are shown in matched setsof woods and irons at eye level on openracks which invite members to step up tothe display, take a club and examine itand possibly even swing it. Individualclubs such as putters and wedges areshown below. Notice the lighting on thiswall - flourescent strip lighting that ishidden behind the cornice.

Can Be Converted. Immediately in front of the wall is a

floor unit which augments the golf equip-ment. The floor unit holds bags, caps, gloves, umbrellas and carts on one side, while the other side has staggered shelvesfor boxed goods, a register counter andstorage space below for wrapping materi-als. This unit may at any time be convert-ed to display any other merchandise of-fered in the shop.

As Visual Merchandising (see JulyGOLFDOM, p. 47) means exactly whatit says, we design shops almost entirelywith open units. We suggested just oneshowcase to Tom to house the many smallitems such as balls, head covers, socks

that should be kept under lock when theshop is closed.

The shoe department (see photo) ismade up of adjustable wall-suspendedshelves. The basic wall fixtures which sus-pend these shelves are the same as thoseholding the glass shelves in the miscel-laneous section (same photo).

The display of shoes permits merchan-dising according to seasons. Additionalshelves may be added or removed, there-by keeping a neat and concise inventoryat all times. Immediately in front of theshoe section is a fitting chair, stool, andmirror. These three accessory pieces reallyput you in the shoe business. They impressmembers with the idea that you are in-terested in giving them not only quality, but a good fit which you can do if youhave all the necessary fixtures.

Selling CoordinatesThe miscellaneous section is a special

promotional area for shorts, skirts andcoordinates pieces. In many shops thesales of coordinates have become solarge that in planning a new shop manypros will, like Tom Ely, ask for a specialarea just for these lines. All of the glassshelves and hangrails are adjustable andinterchangeable and the wall is again light-

The center merchandising section (seephoto) is unique, "something different"that gives Tom the wall space he so urgent-ly needs. Although the section is onlyabout 10 ft. long it gives him the equiva-lent of 20 ft. of wall space because it uti-lizes two sides. This 20 ft. is ample for allof his soft goods. Too, Tom has a dividerbetween his lounge area, (see photo) andthe balance of his shop. He displays hismerchandise around the lounge area there-by capitalizing on "impulse buying".

The center merchandising section iscompletely open and a look-through unit. All its, shelves and hangrails are adjust-able and interchangeable. Notice how oneof each shirt and jacket is displayed on ahanger with the surplus stock alongside. That display platform is the showpiece ofthe shop. This platform is now used forshoe display but it will also hold neatlytrimmed mannequins, forms, etc. Thetropical planter box across the top adds agreat deal of color to the shop.

Ely's shop is paneled from the floorto the beamed ceiling. Color is providedby drapes, floor covering and the planterbox. Yet these colors are minimal as Tom'sshop was designed to let the merchandisesupply the color. There are no large floor

fixtures other than the center merchandis-ing unit at Columbia Edgewater. Thusthere is a free flow of traffic. From anypart of the shop, there is complete visibil-ity both of the inside and outdoors.

This is what Visual Merchandising hasdone for Tom Ely's operation. The shopis about average or slightly above averagein size of the new shops being built. Nu-merous Visual Merchandising methods canbe adapted to older shops. In every in-stance where a pro has used some of thesenew ideas his sales have increased.

Henry Leopold, the apostle of Visualmerchandising, has been close to the re-tail sales field since he was a youngster of15 and worked for a department storewhile going to high school. After com-pleting his schooling he became a manu-facturers' representative and later, withtwo others, opened a retail shoe store.Thereafter he gravitated to store designwork, servicing both retail stores as wellas Midwest pro shops. Two years ago Leo-pold's Display Creations became associat-ed with Ernie Sabayrac, Inc., Hialeah,Fla., in a merchandising and design tieup. The two firms have collaborated on a"Merchandising Manual" that is availableonly to professionals.
