Art I Syllabus

Course description: Art I – a full year studio course meeting 3 times each cycle for 1/2 credit.

Objective: The students will explore the elements of art and the principles of design through numerous projects. An initial focus on basic drawing skills will establish a strong foundation for the students to experiment with new materials in both 2 and 3 dimensional design. Studio projects, journals, discussions and critiques will expand each student’s experience and visual awareness.

1. MaterialsThere is no text for this course. All students are

required to have a journal/sketchbook that will be available for purchase in the art room.

Students should have a drawing tube that will be used to transport their work. This will be available for purchase in the art room. It should be stored in their locker. (18”H)

Three #2 pencils (no mechanicals), two erasers and two black ultra-fine tip Sharpies will be needed for class and should be stored in backpacks. Without these the student is unprepared.

2. Class work Students must arrive to class on time with materials

needed. Students must conduct themselves as deemed appropriate

in the handbook (this includes respect for the teacher and classmates).

All materials and school property are to be carefully maintained.

Students must make up all missed work due to absence. An excused/unexcused slip from the office must accompany the student when returning to class. At this time a date for any missed work will be given. Absence due to truancy reflects a “0” for that day’s assignment as well as consequences determined by the Dean of Students.

All projects must be turned in on time. Students need to recognize the importance of participation

and consistent effort in class.

back for the next class session.Any work that is transported must return in excellent

condition.Students need to recognize the importance of

homework/journal as it does determine 10% of the quarter grade.

Homework and any other course related information can be found in Net Classroom.
