Due --------------------------The year is 2092, and intergalactic space travel is now possible, except it is tremendously expensive. With a huge population boost, which occurred during the beginning of the 21st century, the Earth is slowly being diminished of important natural resources. People on Earth are now going to have to search outer space for resources. A belt of asteroids exists directly outside of our solar system which contains all the elements known to us, and in great abundances. The United Nations has created a commission to investigate possible elements which could be mined. As a member of the commission, your job is to persuade your fellow commission members to decide to mine the element you researched. Cost is an issue, and only one mining operation can be organized. Hopefully it is yours.

Include in your presentation an advertisement that has the element's name, symbol, atomic number, atomic mass, cost and an advertising slogan that describes one or more of its important uses. Advertisement must be neat, colorful, and contain all the information above. You may add pictures that relate to your advertisement theme.

Criteria: Create a Powerpoint presentation (that includes an advertisement) or POSTER, giving all the important scientific characteristics of your element. Your project must include, but not limited to the following:

CHECK CHARACTERISTICS OF ELEMENT/ADVERTISEMENT 1. When, by whom and how the element was discovered. 2. Does it occur naturally as a solid, liquid, or a gas? 3. What is its appearance? 4. Name and symbol for the element and it's origin (Greek, Latin etc., include meaning). 5. Basic information about the element: atomic number and atomic mass ;

atomic structure - number of protons, neutrons, electrons 6. The electron configuration; number of valence electrons 7. Name of element's group and/or famiJy; common isotopes. 8. What are the elements physical and chemical properties (such as color, phase at room

temperature, melting point, boiling point, density, is it flammable, ex_Q_Iosive, radioactive? 9. What substances (compounds) is your element found in; How is your element used.

(eg. Na is found in the compound NaCI, which is table salt.) 10. Uses and importances of the element (industrial, health etc.). positive or negative 11. Where the element can be found in nature (ores, minerals etc.). How is your element

mined, or purified if it is extracted from other substances? Man-made in the lab? 12. Economic impact of element. 13. Your choice: Something you found interesting about your element. 14. advertisement see back of sheet for template

IPC PowerPoint Evaluation Rubric Name " It's Elementary , My Dear" PROJECT Date Per.

This analytic rubric is used to verify specific tasks performed when producing a PowerPoint presentation. If the task has been successfully completed, all points are awarded. No points are awarded if the task is not complete.

CHEMISTRY: When, whom, how element discovered; occur naturally as solid, liquid, or gas? appearance? Name, symbol, origin; (Greek, Latin etc.,). atomic#, atomic mass ; atomic structure-# of protons, neutrons, electrons; electron configuration;# of valence electrons; group and/or family; isotopes. physical & chemical properties (such as color, phase at room temperature, melting point, boiling point, density, is it flammable, explosive, radioactive? This slide features the title of the presentation and includes the author's Title Slide name and assignment number. A graphic or picture is included that 10 10 points relates to the most important concept of the presentation.

(The title should be the largest font on the slide)

Introduction This slide provides a thesis statement that makes the research topic

Slide 10 10 points

clear.

Scientific terms and concepts are properly used. 5 Report of

All concepts within the assigned topic are covered. 5 Research 15 points Research findings are presented in the student's words, not "cut and 5 pasted" from research references.

Conclusion Slide This slide ties the total presentation to the thesis statement. 10

10 points

Bibliography This slide shows all research references used for the presentation.

Slide 10 10 points

(Make a buffeted list of the references.)

Font size makes each slide easily read from a distance. (PowerPoint is meant to be viewed from a distance, not sitting in front 10 of the computer. Don't try to put too much information on one slide.)

Slide Color combinations make the information easy to read. Composition 10

25 points (Font should stand out against the background.)

Graphics or pictures add to the impact of the slide. (Graphics should be used in support of information, not in place of it.) 5 You must have at LEAST one photo/picture per concept

The overall presentation has a professional look.

Overall (Include, but are not limited to: Choice of colors and graphics is for an

Presentation adult audience, not elementary. Slide transitions add to the 10

10 points presentation, not detract from it. Slide margins are centered on the computer screen. Shadows are added to font when appropriate. There are no grammar or spelling errors.)

PowerPoint All assigned PowerPoint tools have been used. Tools 10

10 points (Tools include slide transitions, motion, sound, and timing.)

Score Total Points 100

Self-Students are expected to honestly evaluate their own work. If the difference between the student

evaluation evaluation and the teacher evaluation is more than 1 0 points, 5 points will be deducted from the teacher's score when the grade is recorded.

Deadline PROJECT grade: PowerPoint presentations will not be accepted the day after the deadline *MUST TURN IN: 1) Paper HONOR BOUND CODE on it 2) Disk or CD
