Textbook and Calculator Information

1. ALL Reinhardt Math Classes:  Graphing Calculator:  TI83 or above is required. I will teach using the TI83/TI84. If

you have another type of graphing calculator, you need to have a manual for it or already be familiar with how to

use it. You are welcome to use an online graphing calculator in class and for homework but you MUST have your

own hand-held calculator to use during tests. NO sharing of calculators during tests.

2. Math 102 College Algebra Text: College Algebra in Context with Applications for the Managerial, Life and Social

Sciences, Third Edition by Ronald J. Harshbarger and Lisa S. Yocco  ISBN 032157060X, 9780321570604

3. Math 121 Pre-calculus Text: Precalculus, Eighth Edition by Larson and Hostetler     ISBN-

10: 9781439045770      ISBN-13: 978-1439045770. If you are not easily frustrated by being on the wrong page and

you want to get a CHEAPER 7th edition – that is fine. The info is the same just a few different problems and different

page numbers. If you are easily stressed out with math then you are better off with the 8th edition

4. Math 221 and 321 Calculus 1 and 2 (same book is used) Text: Calculus: Concepts and Contexts (James Stewart's

Calculus Series)  Publisher: Brooks Cole Centegage; 4th edition  ISBN-10: 0495557420   ISBN-13: 978-0495557425

5. Math 210 and 211 Concepts and Connections (same book for both classes) Text: A Problem Solving Approach to

Mathematics for Elementary School Teachers, 10th Ed, by Billstein, Libeskind and Lott, 2004

6. Note: Online books are fine if you like to work in that forum – just be sure to have access during every

class.

Homework Policy› Homework Assignments – due at the beginning of class on

test days. NO late work will be accepted. You can work together or get help from anyone at anytime. You MUST turn in your OWN homework before each test.

› A good online source for homework help is http://patrickjmt.com/. If Cramster (or other) helps you get a hint to get started use it – but do not get so much help that you cannot start problems on your own for the test!

Note: After earning an A average after Test 1 you can choose to do as little or as much homework as you need to. Some sections you will want to do MUCH MORE than what is assigned in order to better understand the concepts.

5 Easy Steps to Earn an A in Mrs. Smith’s Math Class

1. Have Textbook and graphing calculator available from day 1 of class AND bring to every

class meeting!

2. Always be on time to class - have all your materials out and be ready to begin as soon as

class starts.

3.  Be ready to take all 4 tests then your final exam is optional or you can drop your lowest

grade.

4.  Do all homework before the next class meeting. If you have do the homework as we go

along then you will know what I am talking about in class and you can ask questions to gain

more understanding. The homework is useless if you save it all up for right before it is due.

5. ASK FOR HELP. You may get help with homework from me, The Center for Student Success

(free tutoring - bottom of Lawson), a friend or a private tutor. Get help when you need it

do not wait until the night before the test!! There have been MANY students get an A in

math that have struggled with it all through high school – the big secret is that they ASK

FOR HELP!!! I am here to help you many different times of the day not just during the

posted office hours – email me to set up a time that works for your schedule.

Need some help with math (or any subject) …

1. The Center for Student Success, located in room 035 of Lawson, offers free peer and

faculty tutoring for all subjects.

2. To make an appointment,: go to Reinhardt's homepage click on Academics click The

Center for Student Success

3. This page enables you to see tutors and times available for each subject area.

4. At the bottom of the left column, click on Student Appointment Form.

5. Fill in all required fields, signaled by a red dot, and submit your request.

6.  Dr. Emanuel will contact you within the same day to confirm your appointment. Call

770 720 5950.

Your GradeIt is easy to keep up with your grades by using Reinhardt Eagle Web. You will know your test grade and current

average the day after each test. https://eagleweb.reinhardt.edu/ics* Your grade will be based on four one-hour tests, a final, and notebook grades (homework)* Tests (final exam and chapter tests)   80% Notebook 20%* If no tests have been missed then the lowest test will be dropped.

* If you have not missed a test AND have 3 or less absences (2 lates count as an absence) AND if you are happy

with your grade before taking the final, you may exempt the final as your drop grade.  Example: You meet the

above requirements and you have an 84 average you can take your B in the class and exempt the final exam.

• No makeup tests will be given. If you have to miss a test due to other Reinhardt obligations (music, sports etc)

then see me BEFORE the test to work out another class time to take your test. IF you do miss a test it will count as

your dropped grade and you MUST take the final exam.

* Print your syllabus from Eagleweb for this class for more detailed information

Grading Scale:A 90-100B 80-89C 70-79D 60-69F Below 60

Rules to Remember

1. 3 or more absences = 5 points off a test for each absence over 3

2. 2 times late to class= 1 absence

3. ALL homework is due before you begin your test. NO late work will be accepted for any reason.

4. No make up tests - if you have to miss a test for ANY reason this will be your dropped test and you MUST take the final exam. Even if you miss a test the homework is still due on the test day or the next class meeting if this was an unplanned absence

5. If you must miss a test for a school related reason you do have the option to make an appointment with me to take the test early - this must be arranged BY YOU at least 24 hours before the test is given

6. If you are an ASO student it is YOUR responsibility to make arrangements to take the test with Mrs. McNally

7. No cell phones or internet devices may be used during a test

8. Good News: +5 extra points on a test if you send in a jpeg (or bring a print of) you and your calculator in an interesting or funny place,+5 if you join the math/chess club and beat me in a game of chess, +1 point on the next test for THE WHOLE CLASS – if you notice I make a math mistake on the board – like I say 34 but I write 43 etc

Is this the correct class for you?

Having heard the spiel – do you think you were properly placed in this class? If you have any question about that AT ALL – stay after for a minute and talk with me about it or come to my office or email me. Sometimes mistakes happen and students end up in the wrong class. Too difficult a class is a problem for obvious reasons but too easy a class is bad as well since students tend to slack off and get a low grades!

Take action if you feel this is not the correct class for you!!
