Dr. Ruth Jefferson speaks to one of the students involved in the program. IT SHOULD COME AS NO SURPRISE that current research consistently shows that low reading levels in children affect high school dropout rates, involvement in criminal activity, and the probability that at-risk youth will remain in the criminal justice system throughout their adult life. When youth arrive on the YOC campus they are typically behind academically by two grade levels. They may not have had consistent schooling, a support system at home or self- confidence in a classroom setting. When children change schools they lose approximately six months in essential skills. However, it’s important to realize that struggling with vital reading skills is not a sign of low intelligence. At the YOC, we’re committed to providing quality services to each and every child. We believe that by teaching a child to read, we will impact their ability to be successful in life. In early 2016, Ball State University and the YOC, through a grant from the National Institute of Justice, collaborated to offer a new reading program at YOC for residents. This program is both research and a Ball State immersive learning class for the purpose of building positive relationships with residents and teaching them reading intervention strategies. Ball State faculty members Dr. Janay Sander and Dr. Ruth Jefferson refer to the project as Team 2. Ball State students meet with the residents who are enrolled in the project three days per week to help improve reading skills. All youth in the reading program are showing significant gains in reading skills in a very short period of time. In fact, one resident increased his reading level by almost two grades in just four months. YOC Education Coordinator Lindsay Price and her team of education assistants have also seen improvements in science and math as a direct result of the project. “Reading and comprehending what you’ve read are two very different things,” she said. “Understanding what you’re reading is a game changer. It boosts a child’s confidence, which allows for more participation in class. As a result, we’re seeing vast improvements in other subjects as well.” As the Team 2 research program begins to wind down in 2018, the goal at the end of the project is complete transfer to YOC. Ball State faculty will train YOC staff to deliver the reading program, and give the YOC all of the books used in the study. YOC is committed to sustaining this important programming. “The Reading Intervention Program has proven to be an excellent resource for youth on our campus,” said YOC Residential Director Char Hawkins. “When youth come to the YOC, we find they have often struggled to meet expectations in reading, but through their own personal hard work, and the collaborative efforts of BSU and YOC, we have seen them make great strides toward being at their appropriate reading level. Some have found a genuine love for reading, which will only serve them well in the future.” INDEX Reading is a Game Changer ............ Page 1 CEO Letter .....................................

They may not have had consistent schooling, a support system at home or self-confidence in a classroom setting.

As a result, we’re seeing vast improvements in other subjects as well.”

As the Team 2 research program begins to wind down in 2018, the goal at the end of the project is complete transfer to YOC.

Youth Opportunity Center Newsletter - Summer 2017

The Youth Opportunity Center celebrated its 25th anniversary with a dinner and program at the Horizon Convention Center on Thursday, June 8, 2017. Surrounded by more than 370 friends, donors, board members and staff, the evening celebrated visionary retired circuit court judge Steven Caldemeyer’s commitment to youth and families, honored direct-care staff who work on the frontline with the kids, and planted a vision for the care of the next generation of children in our community.

Following dinner, a tribute video highlighted Caldemeyer’s passion and commitment to our community’s families and children through the establishment of the YOC in 1992. Caldemeyer stated, “You know life’s ever changing. You don’t know what’s going to happen 25 years from now. All you can do is give the kids a good conscience and a good sense of responsibility. I learned one thing from dealing with kids, that they respect honesty and consistency. I suppose in all my time working with juveniles, that’s all I’ve learned. But that’s a lot.”

The evening was filled with fun and meaning including an inspirational talk by Chad Porter (Wilmington, NC), one of Zig Ziglar’s team. Porter shared his personal story of triumph following a boating accident which resulted in the loss of a leg and a very long recovery. Porter stated, “Hope keeps you going when you don’t know how to answer the question, ‘Why me?’” An all-around athlete turned motivational speaker, Porter also challenged the audience to believe and invest in the children in our communities.

Jeff Parsons, YOC board chair, provided a unique opportunity for the guests to express appreciation to the YOC staff. Each guest was invited to write a message of

hope on a preprinted card. One guest wrote, “Thank you for giving these broken children hope for tomorrow and providing education, emotional and loving support…” The cards will be framed and displayed on campus as a memento of the event, and as daily encouragement to staff.

At the conclusion of the evening, Mr. Kelly Stanley, a well-known community leader, YOC

board member, and campaign chair, shared his passion for the YOC and the kids in our community. “The YOC is an outstanding organization with strong leadership and a passionate, dedicated staff,” Stanley remarked. “My wife, Donna, and I had the opportunity to visit the YOC a few years ago and were immediately hooked and wanted to do more ‘For the Kids’. The needs of children in our community are extensive and this campaign is one way to secure funding needed to transform the next generation of children in our community.”

Can you believe we are already at the midway point in the calendar year?

At the YOC we just kicked off a new fiscal year at the beginning of July. We believe this will be a year full of growth and hope for the future.

Every year brings new challenges and exciting opportunities but this one is especially busy with numerous special projects. We recently celebrated our 25th Anniversary with a look back at the important events that shaped who we are as an organization and we recognized the significance our staff plays in the lives of those we serve. We are deep into the implementation of our multi - year strategic plan with four distinct focus areas. We are adapting current programs and launching new ones to meet the ever-growing need of children in the state. And finally, we are identifying the resources needed to secure the future of the organization through our Transforming Together: The Next Chapter Capital Campaign.

It is a great time in the life of the YOC!

On the following pages, you will get just a glimpse of the exciting things happening at the YOC. We invite you to join us in this challenging yet very rewarding work.

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS

Throughout the evening, videos recognized Steve Caldemeyer, YOC staff members, and the impact the YOC and its staff have had on the children and community.

A HEART FOR KIDS With genuine concern, care and compassion,

I am committed to helping children.

A WINNING SMILE I communicate positively, knowing my

encouragement will bring hope.

BROAD SHOULDERS Knowing that others depend on me,

I take ownership of my responsibilities and embrace new challenges.

HELPING HANDS I think of others first, reaching out to

serve and support with patience.

A STRONG BACKBONE With confidence and respect, I am firm, fair, and consistent.

CORE VALUES

If we can help save a child, then why couldn’t that child savethe family, the neighborhood, the community, the world?

VISION

We help catch children who have fallen...Fallen on hard times, Fallen between the cracks, Fallen from grace.

We pick them up. We stand up for them. We teach them to stand on their own. Then we watch them give back to their families,

their neighborhoods, their communities, their world.

Youth Opportunity Center - Summer 2017 Page 7Page 6 Youth Opportunity Center - Summer 2017

They may not have had consistent schooling, a support system at home or self-confidence in a classroom setting.

As a result, we’re seeing vast improvements in other subjects as well.”

As the Team 2 research program begins to wind down in 2018, the goal at the end of the project is complete transfer to YOC.

Some have found a genuine love for reading, which will only serve them well in the future.”
