Team Lightning students continue to work hard in their studies, developing every day in gaining insight and wisdom as we work to become safe, responsible, and respectful students.

In Language Arts classes we finished reading The Lightning Thief. Students had a unit on Greek gods/goddesses and myths to help them with background knowledge before we started the novel. We are also working on essential reading skills like analyzing the author's strengths and weaknesses, inference, cause and effect, as well the minor elements of fiction. We will finish the unit before Thanksgiving with a culminating compare and contrast essay about the novel vs. the movie.

In Science class we are finishing up our unit on the human body and it's systems. When we return from Thanksgiving break students will finally get to dissect their frogs to further study the organ systems we've discussed in class. For the remaining weeks of this semester, we will dive into the world of heredity; learning about how cells divide and why we look the way we look.

This month in Math we will begin learning about decimals, fractions and percents and relating them with ratios and proportions. Each class will also do one or two projects

relating to ratios and proportions. Adv. Pre-Algebra and Pre-Algebra A will be doing a project that relates to the hand size of Michael Jordan; while Math and Pre-Algebra A will do a project that deals with the idea of capture and recapture. This should be a fun way for them to wrap up the semester!

Finally in Social Studies classes, we continue learning about ancient cultures and the development of new religions. The past few weeks, students have learned about ancient India and the religions of Hinduism and Buddhism. We are really excited because 7th grade students have the opportunity to visit the Hindu Temple here in Omaha on Thursday, Dec. 5th. This is a unique first-time opportunity that our 7th graders are getting to experience.

Mrs. Sheets' Language Arts students are finishing up working cooperatively in their Lightning Thief book clubs. Next, we are looking forward to making stop motion videos about the Lightning Thief!

The World History classes are studying the ancient civilization of India! Kids are learning about two of the world's largest religions, Hinduism and Buddhism, as well as the achievements of the ancient Indians. Students are also spending time learning about the life of Mohandas Gandhi, and his use of nonviolence to create change in the world.

In Ms. Redemske's Math classes, students are learning about proportional thinking and using ratios to solve everyday problems. We even did an experiment to see if the Statue of

Liberty's nose is too long. (We found out that it is!) We will also be working on a project related to Michael Jordan's hand size and use proportions to make scale models of objects.

In science, we are beginning Unit 3 covering Reproduction and Heredity. We will be learning how all living things produce offspring and why some organisms look exactly like the original organism and why other organisms look like a combination of the parents' characteristics or might not even look like the parent at all. We also will be discovering the way that these characteristics (traits) are passed from parent to offspring. At the end of this unit, the goal is to do a project demonstrating students' knowledge of traits (characteristics) passed on from parent to offspring by building creatures.

Team Ice is staying with cool with showing off their creativity in Pre-Algebra by making data posters. They surveyed 100 people and displayed different ways to show the data like bar graphs and circle graphs. Algebra classes are also creating cool projects about slope. They took pictures around the school and are calculating the slope of various objects to make a slope portfolio. In science the students are learning all about the periodic table of elements.

History classes are working to understand all about the Constitutional convention. Language Arts classes are reading Lord of the Flies and working on their descriptive writing skills. We are looking forward the more snow on Team ICE!

Team 8B is catching Fire...burning through 2nd quarter so quickly. History has been working on the Declaration of Independence. Science has finished up a project on the periodic table and adopted an element. Language Arts is working on writing skills and in math we have a data analysis project and Algebra is sliding through slope. The end of December brings an end of the semester and all students in Algebra will be taking a final. We want to give them the experience of what it will look like and be like to take a final before going into high school. Hope all have a safe and blessed holiday!!
