STUDENT EXPECTATIONS

In order for students to learn best and be successful during their virtual learning experience, students

will be expected to do the following:

• Attend classes during scheduled time: If students do not log into the class when they are

supposed to, they will be marked absent. Teachers and principals will follow the School Board

Policy 204: Attendance. Students who do not log into their classes on the assigned days will be

marked as truant. Habitually truant students may be subject to discipline such as being issued

truancy citations with the Magistrate’s Office.

• Be on time: Students are expected to log on at the time class is scheduled. Students signing late

will be marked as late and consequences may be administered.

• Only use district approved devices and/or programs for learning: The school district was

able to purchase a device for each student. The devices are designed to work with the approved

programs we offer. The technology department is not responsible for the maintenance or

troubleshooting of non-district devices.

• Remain active and engaged: Virtual learning is expected to mimic face-to-face to learning the

best it can. In order for a student experience to be successful, students must participate and be

engaged the same way they would in a classroom. Students should not be turning off their

camera and should have their microphones muted unless otherwise directed by their teacher.

• Recording of a lesson is ILLEGAL!: Students and families are prohibited from recording any

teacher lesson. Should a student or parent be caught doing so, the matter will be turned over to

the police per § 5703. Interception, disclosure or use of wire, electronic or oral

communications: Purdon's Pennsylvania Statutes and Consolidated Statutes Title 18 Pa.C.S.A.

Crimes and Offenses

• Students must maintain proper classroom behavior: Students are to use their name when

signing into their programs and should not have inappropriate backgrounds.

• Student dress: Student dress should follow the district dress code policy (SB Policy 221). In a

virtual environment, comfortable clothing is acceptable; however, inappropriate clothing is not

acceptable.

• Asynchronous Learning Time: Students are expected to use this time to work on assignments

that may be used for reinforcement of skills learned, and/or online resource work.

• Treat each class equally: Each class is equally important. Students are to attend Core Content

classes along with special area/unified arts classes. The classes are graded.

• Submit work on time: Students are expected to submit work on time. Student work will be

graded in accordance with the district grading policy.

6

ATTENDANCE

During virtual learning students will follow the school district’s attendance policy (SB Policy 204).

Attendance shall be required of all students during the days and hours that school is in session, except

that authorized district staff may excuse a student for temporary absences upon receipt of satisfactory

evidence of mental, physical, or other urgent reasons that may reasonably cause the student's absence.

Habitually truant shall mean six (6) or more school days of unexcused absences during the current

school year by a child subject to compulsory school attendance.

Truant shall mean having incurred three (3) or more school days of unexcused absences during the

current school year by a child subject to compulsory school attendance.

Parental excusal can be done by emailing the addresses below for each building. Parents must submit

in writing the name of the student, grade, and reason for absence.

SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES

All IEP supports and services will be conducted in accordance with the current IEP. IEP case

managers are your main point of contact for any concerns or issue you encounter regarding special

education supports and accommodations. Please contact your case manager first and they will involve

the appropriate parties to address any concerns. Please note, in order to avoid additional school

visitors, we will hold all of our IEP and 504 meetings via virtual methods such as our Microsoft Teams

platform. Some of our students are being considered for in-person instruction, if your child is being

considered you will be contacted by Student Services staff directly.

7

DISTRICT GRADING POLICIES

Chichester School District’s grading policies will remain in effect during the virtual learning

experience. Students are expected to submit work on time. In the event of an issue with submitting

work electronically, students should contact their teacher via the chat/messenger feature in Microsoft

Teams or Schoology, or they can email their teacher directly. The district recognizes that electronic

submission is new to some families and will be working with families on directions on how to submit

work and allow for a grace period in the beginning of the virtual learning as students and families

become more familiar with the process. There are different grading policies for each level, and they

can be found later in this handbook in the school’s section.

DISTRICT ALERT/MESSAGING SYSTEM

Beginning July 1, 2020, Chichester School District will be implementing a new school alert

system called SwiftK12. This will take the place of our current alert system School Messenger.

To guarantee the alert system is used efficiently, we will need to confirm your contact

information is accurate and up-to-date always.

SwiftK12 allows our schools to send messages using phone, email and SMS text messaging.

Phone calls will be sent with 610-485-6881 as the caller ID number. Text messages will be sent

[From Name of Building:] Please note you will not be able to reply to text messages sent from the

school.

SwiftK12 is integrated with the existing PowerSchool Parent Portal. If you log-on to the Parent

Portal, you will now see a new link called SwiftReach SwiftK12 on the left navigation pane under

Alerting. We suggest you log-on using Chrome or Firefox.

You will be able to see Contact Information button in the top navigation.

Within Alert Preferences button of the Parent Portal, you’ll be able to choose your

communication preferences (email, phone and/or text message) by placing a checkmark into the

fields.

Note: Setting up parent preferences is your responsibility. You will receive messages to every

contact field shown in Alert Preferences until updated in parent portal. Tolls and charges

associated with messages from the school are your responsibility and not the responsibility of the

school. Please be sure to set your preferences if there are any numbers or addresses to which you

don’t like to be contacted. All phone numbers & email addresses must be in valid format.

8

Emergency messages are always sent with all three message types (email, text, and phone) and

to every contact field shown. We can’t change this. If you do not have access to log into the

Parent Portal, you may contact your child(s) school directly to request changes.

ADDITIONAL DIRECTIONS IN APPENDIX A

on the Internet.

The building administrator shall have the authority to determine what is inappropriate use and his/her decision is

Security

System security is protected through the use of passwords. Failure to adequately protect or update passwords

could result in unauthorized access to personal or district files. To protect the integrity of the system, the

following guidelines shall be followed:

1. Employees and students shall not reveal their passwords to another individual.

2. Users are not to use a computer that has been logged in under another student's or employee's name.

3. Any user identified as a security risk or having a history of problems with other computer systems may

be denied access to the network.

10

Consequences for Inappropriate Use

The network user shall be responsible for damages to the equipment, systems, and software resulting from

deliberate or willful acts.

Illegal use of the network; intentional deletion or damage to files of data belonging to others; copyright

violations; and theft of services will be reported to the appropriate legal authorities for possible prosecution.

General rules for behavior and communications apply when using the Internet, in addition to the stipulations of

this policy. Loss of access and other disciplinary actions shall be consequences for inappropriate use. Depending

on the nature or degree of the offense, and whether the offender is a student or employee, discipline may be

suspension, termination or expulsion.

harm or destroy data of another user, Internet or other networks; this includes but is not limited to uploading or

unsolicited communication. Any network user who receives threatening or unwelcome communications shall

report such immediately to a teacher or administrator. Network users shall not reveal personal information to

other users on the network, including chat rooms, e-mail, Internet, etc.
