Pick Up Rental Car From Hertz

The biggest challenge for American drivers and others accustomed to driving on the right is likely to

be driving on the left side of the road. Aggressive local drivers may also cause some stress — stay

alert and drive defensively. For example, if you see a car from the opposite direction overtaking

another vehicle, you are expected to go into the shoulder lane to allow them to pass. The driver will

flash a quick “thank you” with his or her high beams. On highways, be wary of pedestrians walking on

the road, and in rural areas watch for animals.

Fire and third party liability insurance is mandatory and is included in all rentals. Third party liabilityinsurance covers up to US$570,000 in South Africa in case of damage or injury to people orproperty outside of the rental car.In all but the most remote areas, gas stations are easy to find, are open 24/7 and accept creditcards. Station attendants will pump the gas for you, and a small tip is appreciated.

Car break-ins in urban areas are a frequent problem; keep valuables out of sight at all times. You’ll

often see “car guards” in parking lots; again, a small gratuity when you leave is welcomed.

December 11 - Wednesday

Take A Tour Through The Stellenbosch Wine CountryLeave early from Cape Town. The Wine regions open around 9am so you’ll want to leave by 8:30am to

get a full day in. It takes roughly 30 minutes to get from downtown Cape Town to the first place.

Thankfully, modern technology has introduced Uber to wine enthusiasts. Nowadays, there’s no reason

to drive yourself anymore when there are Ubers readily available all over Cape Town and the wine

regions. An Uber from Cape Town to Stellenbosch city is R300-400 ($20 - $30 USD) which split

between two or three people is worth not having to deal with South African police. Ubers are readily

available for pickups in between wine farms. It should be easy to have a solid day on under R1,000

($70 USD) for transportation.

Of course, some cab drivers will negotiate and you may be able to hire a driver for the entire day for

around that same price.

First Stop: VergelegenStart your day with one of the oldest and most beautiful wine farms in South Africa. Vergelegen is

amongst South Africa’s top wine producers. Located in Somerset West, this wine farm offers world-

class wines at the modern tasting center, and informal diving at the Stebles bistro, and fine dining at

The Camphors signature restaurant.

Next Door: Morgenster

Located next door to Vergelegen, Morgenster is famous for its wine as well as olive oil production. If

you’re a big fan of olives, olive oil, and olive oil & bread, this is the perfect place. They offer wine

tastings with olive oil pairings, which can perfectly together. The views from the front porch where you

have your tastings is absolutely breathtaking as well. Make sure to try the truffle olive oil!

Lunch: Waterkloof Wine EstateStaying within Somerset West, the next stop is Waterkloof Wine Estate. This is one of the most

picturesque and stunning wine farms. The wine farm is perched at the top of a hill with panoramic

views of False Bay from its modern, yet classy interior. Have lunch here at their award winning

restaurant offering some of the best South African fare in the area.

After Lunch: Tokara Wine EstateFrom Waterkloof, take another Uber further into the mountains of Stellenbosch to Tokara wine estate

on the Helshoogte pass. The wine at Tokara is consistent winners of numerous wine awards and the

best part? The tastings are 100% free. The views are also quite incredible as well.

Last Stop: Delaire Graff Wine Estate The views of the mountains and vines from their massive estate is nothing short of breath-taking.

Their wine is some of the best rated and their restaurants are consistently rated as some of the best in

South Africa. They also have a luxury hotel here, as well as a diamond store.

Cape Town International AirportCape Town International Airport is located 20 kilometres (13 miles) from the city centre and is easily

accessible from all parts of the city. Shuttle buses connect the airport with the city centre and the trip

takes about 45 minutes. Tickets are sold at kiosks inside the terminal.

Licensed taxis operate from a rank outside the terminal and take 25-30 minutes to central Cape Town.

Luxury hotels also offer chauffeur-driven transfers to and from the airport, bookable through the hotel.

Airport shuttle bus tickets are also available from the Cape Town Tourism Visitor Centre in the arrivals

hall.

Electricity230V/50Hz

When traveling to a foreign country, the electrical outlet most likely is different from ours. In manycountries you will need a converter plug to fit your electric devices. I travel with an iPhone and aCPAP. So, I bring two, plus one for my wife’s tablet. Converter plugs are very difficult to find, andexpensive overseas, and why waste time looking? Buying online before you go will save you timeand money.

Public TransportThe safest and easiest way to get around town by public transport is the Cape Town Explorer, the city’s

official sightseeing bus services, which stop at all the city’s main attractions. You can get on and off as

often as you wish, and tickets can be bought on board or at the Cape Town Tourism Visitor Centres in

the city centre and the V&A Waterfront. First bus leaves the V&A Waterfront at 9.30 and buses then

leave every 45 minutes until 15.00.

Public buses, privately-run minibuses and commuter trains operate in and around Cape Town but if

you value your comfort, safety and security using them is not a good idea. Minibus safety standards

are poor, petty theft is common on buses and trains and violent crime is not uncommon on trains.

Cape Town Explorer:

and have them write down exactly how much of the foreign currency you will receive. Check thatagainst the posted exchange rate for buy and sell. Not all Change Currency places are equal. Another thought, if you are going to multiple countries, get a small amount of each currency so youcan pay for the transportation from the airport or train terminal to your hotel. Your local bank will nothave foreign currency, so get it when you make your first exchange.Choose one or two credit cards to take with you and call the issuers shortly before you leave toinform them of which countries you will be visiting. Otherwise, your credit card could be denied, asthe issuer may find the international activity suspicious.Traveler ’s checks are no longer universally accepted, and you may have trouble using them inmany countries, especially the less developed ones. Instead, use your bank card to withdrawmoney from ATMs, which can be found in even the most exotic destinations. Memorize your numericPIN, as many ATM keypads will not display the numbers and letters we use, or they may be placeddifferently on the keypad. Generally, your most favorable exchange rate will be through the ATM,although most companies will charge a transaction fee.Write down your credit card numbers, but don’t keep the list in your wallet. Know how to contactyour company from abroad. Toll-free numbers do not work from outside the U.S., but credit cardcompanies will accept collect calls at a designated number.
