On Tuesday afternoon Y4 & Y6 travelled down to Chichester Festival theatre to watch a children’s concert with a full orchestra playing. They were treated to a variety of well-known classics from a variety of composers. Different instruments were show cased for children to see with the whole event narrated by a magician who engaged the entire audience! Everyone was encouraged to clap and sing along at various times and great fun was had by all. As ever our children were impeccably behaved amidst a packed theatre and clearly enjoyed their afternoon out. Well done and thanks to all involved and a special mention to the Foyle Foundation for their financial support with transport. As our older children were travelling back on Tuesday the teachers of our younger children in school invited parents to a short presentation about early reading, with the purpose of explaining some of the changes to routines of books going home. Miss Channon talked about the importance of reading with your child, even though it may feel like your child maybe can’t really read yet. It is SO important in these early years for children to develop a love of books and to enjoy a story being read to them. Whatever you are doing at home – please write it in the red log book as all these reads go towards the 3 reads a week challenge that has started in Reception. Miss Hurrion and Mr Aldren explained that the school has invested heavily in buying new Read write Inc (RWI) phonics books which will be coming home each Friday with your children for a week, as well as their usual reading book. Please spend some time talking about the RWI book and encouraging your child to sound out words and read it to you. If this is a struggle, then read it to them first – there may be some questions and prompts for you to ask your child about the book in the front cover if you find this tricky. There is a link on our school website to supporting children with phonics at home: http://www.midhurst-primary-school.co.uk/parents/phonics/ There is more online advice and resources to use with your children on the Oxford Owl website. I believe logins and passwords for this came out last week but if you have any further questions please talk to your classteacher who I am sure will be only too pleased to help you. Our school council met again on Wednesday lunchtime and explored further their classes discussions on designs for the local skate park up at Carron Lane. Mrs Bowles was delighted with their enthusiasm and creative thinking and now has lots of ideas to share with local town councillor Jeanette Sutton who is visiting next week to listen to the children’s ideas and take away their designs.

Thursday saw both woods sessions taking place without any weather disasters this week – although it was rather chilly! Miss Channon’s group enjoyed making and tasting potato and onion soup while Mrs Moorcroft’s group are still getting used to exploring our ‘big woods’ and enjoyed a fire and hot chocolate. I was up at the woods on Friday afternoon with the Year 5’s – we had a building session with many children working on their palatial dens, while others helped Gareth re-build our bridge into the woods and Jodi enjoyed creating a bird table for our Forest School robin that visits us every week. Of course typically he was nowhere to be seen – but we hope he enjoys his new place to eat! Other activities included weaving and pancake making - delicious!!

ASPIRE COACHING – FREE DAY ON OFFER AT HALF TERM – NOMINATE YOUR CHILD!! Aspire have given the school 2 free places for one of their half term courses (see poster below for the dates) for 2 lucky children at MPS. However, as the courses are held outside of Midhurst and transport will be needed, I thought it best to ask parents if they would like to put their child’s name forward for this opportunity. If you are able to take your child to one of these events and they are keen to attend then please pop into the office and let Mrs Cain, or one of her team know. We will close the draw on the morning of Friday 7th Feb and pull out the lucky winners in assembly on the same day. GOOD LUCK!!

SPARE TIGHTS, SOCKS & PANTS PLEA! I gather we are running low on spare supplies of clothing in school and are in quite desperate need of clean, second hand tights, socks and pants – especially for our younger age children. So, if you are having a clear-out at home and/or your child has had a growth spurt – please do think of donating items to school before throwing them away. Thankyou!

REMINDER - VACANCIES – PTA & GOVERNORS At 7.30pm on Thursday 30th January the PTA are holding their AGM at school. During this meeting both Tory and Brenda are stepping down from their roles as Chair and Secretary respectively and these posts will need to be filled to assure the future of Midhurst Primary School’s Parent Teacher Association. PLEASE come along to support this event and consider if you, or one of your friends, might be able to take on one of these roles for the coming year. As budgets become ever more tight in schools, monies raised by the PTA will be increasingly important to support the work we do across the school and supplement the budget we receive. We look forward to seeing you there! Our school governing body also has a current vacancy for a parent governor – please watch out for more details coming home in book bags giving more information about this interesting and important role.

PTA NEWS FROM TORY Well after nearly 7 years of being involved with the PTA at Midhurst Primary, and 6 years as Chair, this will be my last memo. At 7.30 this Thursday 30th of January we are holding our ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING (AGM) in school. During this meeting both myself and Brenda will be stepping down as Chair and Secretary respectively. In order to assure the future of the PTA at Midhurst Primary School, these posts will need to be filled. These posts don’t have to be done by one person, you could maybe have joint Chairs or Secretaries or indeed any structure you like. Jenny our current Treasurer will be standing for re-election, so will be on hand to manage the financial side, but she can’t do it alone. Please come along to support us and maybe consider if you might be able to take on one of these roles (or part of a role) for the next year. Unfortunately, if we do not get any volunteers to help form a committee, then the the PTA will have to CLOSE. This will be a great loss to all our children. Not only will they miss out on all the fun activities that the PTA runs, for example there will be no more Summer Fairs, Discos, Easter Egg hunts, Textile recycling, Cake Raffles, Winter Fun days, personalised Christmas cards, or year 6 hoodies; the school will also lose the valuable financial support that the PTA provides through its fundraising. Did you know that over the last few years the money raised by PTA has been spent on supporting the mini bus provision, Quad (Recepion class room and building) refurbishment, revamping the book corners in every class room (providing 100’s of new books), Theatre performances and lots of playground equipment, gazebos and benches to name but a few. In a time of education budget cuts and austerity, this is when Midhurst Primary School needs the financial support of a PTA the most! It would be such a shame for the school to lose such a valuable asset that benefits all of our children in the way of additional resources. More importantly, it helps make our children’s experience of MPS even more memorable and fun through the enrichment activities we provide. Please come and have a chat to Brenda and I if you feel that you (or maybe you and a friend or small group) could help fill these important and fulfilling roles. Thank you everyone for your support over the years - it’s certainly been a lot of fun and I look forward to seeing the next phase of the PTA. Thanks Tory

***UNCLAIMED RAFFLE PRIZES! *** FINAL CALL!!

We still have ONE unclaimed Christmas raffle prizes – GREEN ticket number 370 has no name – please check your tickets and pop into the school office to claim your bag of goodies – thankyou!
