President’s MessageI would like to thank everyone who took time to attend our national convention which was held in Toronto in mid-October.We had a record turnout of nearly two hundred people with delegates from across Canada, the United States and one fromGermany. The theme for our convention was an extremely appropriate one, "Remembering the Past…Facing the Future".

Our convention was a celebration of Atlas Van Lines (Canada) Ltd. and its agents’ forty-one years of shared history. I wasextremely proud to present seventy-eight "Agent Service Recognition Awards" on October 15th. These awards are past dueand were created to honour those of you who have been part of the Atlas family for an extended period of time. Since thiswas the program’s inaugural year, we began with those agents who have been with us for at least ten years. Recognition willbe ongoing at the annual convention, recognizing those agents that have been part of the agency family for a minimum of10 years and in 5 year increments thereafter. I firmly believe that the strength and success of our organization is due inlarge part to the long-standing relationships that we have in the Atlas network.

The second part of our theme, "…Facing the Future” was a timely one. Our industry is at another crossroads in its long history. We face many challenges in today’s highly competitive environment. Like other industries (i.e. airlines, telecommuni-cations and retail) we are under enormous pressure to find creative solutions to the issues of the day. As we agreed duringour business session, we plan to do just that at our upcoming "Strategy" meeting in February, 2005.

This issue of Moving Up is a commemorative one with lots of photographs from the convention including a special insertfeaturing all of our guests who had their portraits taken during our Saturday night Gala. As you know, Donna and I wereunable to join you that evening due to the sudden passing of Donna’s father. I understand that the vocal talents of our special guest performer, Michael Burgess added an extra touch of enjoyment to the evening.

You should all be very proud of the company and net-work that you have helped build here in Canada. I feel very confident that together we will find thestrength and commitment needed to forge ahead intoan even brighter and more prosperous future.

D.G. Auld, CMAPresident

Paul Leader, Atlas’ Senior Vice President, Operations and Government Liaison hasbeen appointed to Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) Board of Directors, commencingJanuary 2005. The CTA is a federation of provincial trucking associations representinga broad cross-section of the trucking industry, namely 4500 carriers, owner-operatorsand industry suppliers. The CTA’s head office is based in Ottawa and has provincialassociations in Vancouver, Calgary, Regina, Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal and Monctonwho represent the industry’s viewpoint on national and international policy, regulatoryand legislative.

As a Past Chairman of the OTA, Paul continues to serve on their Executive Board.During his tenure as Chairman Paul was faced with a public relations nightmare whena separated trailer wheel killed a motorist in the east end of Toronto, followed shortlythereafter by a similar incident in the west end. It was a difficult time to be representing the industry but Paul and the OTA pressed on with initiatives on manyfronts to both improve truck safety through cooperation with the provincial governmentin refocusing enforcement and improving driver and mechanic training opportunitiesand also to achieve positive media coverage for the trucking industry.

Facing the Future…Strategy ConferenceFebruary 27 – March 1, 2005

Atlas Van Lines (Canada) Ltd. and it’s agent network began a journey together back in January, 1991 when we held our firststrategy conference. Over the years we have accomplished a great deal through our ongoing series of strategy meetings. Manyof our existing programs are a direct result of these endeavours. The bond of mutual trust and respect generated by Atlas andits agents’ ability to have open and honest dialogue and to listen to each other’s opinions are the major reasons why thesemeetings result in creative and practical answers to the issues of the day.

The 2005 Strategy meeting is expected to be one of the most important held to date since the challenges our industry facesare real and in need of immediate solutions. To assist us, Atlas has once again engaged the services of the eminently quali-fied, Dr. Peter Richardson to facilitate. Peter has been a member of the faculty at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario forthe past twenty-five years. He teaches both introductory and advanced strategy courses at the School of Business, on theExecutive MBA programs and on a number of the school’s one and three week intense Continuing Education Programs.Through his research and associated consulting activities, Dr. Richardson has developed a unique concept of "Strategy inAction". He has authored over 75 papers and case studies on strategic management including one based on Atlas Van Lines(Canada) Ltd.

Currently Dr. Richardson is exploring the impact of the increasing demand for speed in business, which he believes has pro-found implications for organizational change. His 2002 book, "Fast Forwards: Organizational Change in 100 Days" and theaccompanying "Practitioner Guide”, published in 2003 have received rave reviews. Recent and current clients include Alcoa,CVRD Barrick Gold, Bell Canada, Canada Steamship Lines, Falconbridge, Inco, the Supreme Court of Canada and HealthCanada. His previous book, "Cost Containment: The Ultimate Strategic Advantage" is one of the few books written on costimprovement.

Together with Dr. Richardson, the Atlas management group and our attending agents will work together to map out our plansas to how best to "Face the Future".

Atlas Van Lines was very pleased to have David Bradley, CEO, Canadian Trucking Allianceand President, Ontario Trucking Association as a guest speaker at our fall, Board ofDirectors’ meeting. Mr. Bradley joined the OTA in 1985 and took on the additional roleas CEO of the CTA in 1997. Prior to these appointments, he worked first as a financialmarkets analyst for one of the major chartered banks and then as a management consultant. With a Master’s Degree in Economics, he brought a wealth of knowledge andexperience to the transportation industry. During his tenure, Mr. Bradley has served onnumerous federal, provincial and international boards, committees and advisory groups. He has spoken to industry groups all over the world and is much sought after by the mediaas the "voice" of the transportation industry.

Mr. Bradley graciously gave us permission to reproduce some of the details from his highly informative presentation. Hefocused on the many issues and challenges that the transportation industry is facing including our very real and very serious driver shortage. Some of the facts presented were startling, even for those of us working in this sector.

Canadian Trucking Industry Facts

• Revenues $50+ Billion• % of Revenue From Trans Border Shipments 47%• Number of Trucking Companies in Canada 9,700• Trucking as % of GDP 1.2% (Air 0.4%, Rail 0.5%)• Number of Direct Jobs 400,000• % of Consumer Goods Moved Via Truck 90%

During his presentation, Mr. Bradley indicated that cumulatively, the issues facing the transportation industry have the potential of creating the "Perfect Storm".

Issues and Challenges

• Appreciation of Canadian Dollar• Escalating Fuel Prices• Sky-rocketing Insurance Premiums• Driver Shortage• Security/Border Issues• New Hours of Service Regulations• US EPA Emission Regulations

All of these issues impact Atlas Van Lines as it relates to both our household goods moving and our special products/freightoperations. Of the seven noted above, the driver shortage is one of the most critical. Mr. Bradley shared some informationfrom a series of reports, collectively titled "Canada’s Driving Force" which was recently released by the Canadian TruckingHuman Resources Council (CTHRC) in conjunction with Human Resources and Skills Development Canada.

Overall the calculation of the number of new drivers required over the next five years takes into account not only those drivers who will be needed because of industry growth, but also those drivers who will act as replacements for the driverswho leave the industry through retirement or change of occupation. The aging workforce factor is an integral part of thisissue with:

Transportation Industry FacesMajor Challenges

Page 17: Moving Up · our business session, we plan to do just that at our upcoming ... Demenagement Ste-Julie Inc. Dowell’s ... Atlas’ Vice President Business and Agency

17

Challenge …Aging Driver Workforce

% Over 45 Years of Age 40%% Over 55 years of Age 13%

The CTHRC study conducted extensive interviews to determine the reasons why there are so few new entrants to thisemployment group. The major ones cited are:

• Difficult lifestyle (especially long distance hauling) – away from home for long periods• Unfair compensation considering hours, expenses, lifestyle demands• Poor industry image• Poor treatment from shippers, receivers and dispatchers

A particularly encouraging segment of Mr. Bradley’s presentation came in the form of:

One Shipper’s Message to Traffic Managers

• The driver shortage is real and will continue• Carriers will not be adding (buying) new equipment• Existing good customers will get priority • Carriers are going to use present assets more efficiently• Customers should solidify partnerships with existing carriers• Work with the carrier as a partner when discussing terms• Be reasonable in any rate discussions

Atlas Van Lines and its agency family will be doing its utmost to find appropriate solutions to these challenges, and is in theprocess of determining how to align the company with either the OTA or CTA in 2005.

Fred Haladay was honoured to have been chosen as theChair of the Conference Planning Committee for theCanadian Employee Relocation Council’s (CERC) 2004relocation conference. This year, St. John’s, NF was thehost city to nearly 250 delegates from across Canada, the United States and several overseas countries. Eachyear, this meeting brings together corporate relocationmanagers, third party relocation specialists, movers, destination service providers, tax experts and a wholerange of other relocation related service providers.

Fred, his committee and CERC Executive Vice President,Stephen Cryne laboured for nearly a year to put together a truly outstanding educational program and tohelp coordinate the various social and networkingevents. Logistics were a bit of a challenge with sessionsbeing held in two separate hotels but Fred’s transportation expertise must have come in handy sinceeverything went according to plan. For many of the delegates this was their first visit to Newfoundland andthey were as captivated with it as the Atlas delegateswere when we had our convention there in 2001.

The theme of the conference was "Embracing Change"and this year’s conference faculty included industryexperts and senior managers from some of Canada’slargest and best-managed organizations. They sharedthe experiences of their success and outlined how they are adapting to change and preparing for the future. Every imaginabletopic was covered including new trends in relocation, intercultural training, organizational effectiveness, taxation and immigration laws and domestic and global perspectives on issues that are shaping the relocation industry.

The committee’s choice of keynote speaker for the opening session was a truly inspired one. Dr. Richard Heinzl, Founder ofDoctors Without Borders, Canada gave a riveting and thought provoking address to the group wherein he shared his personal experiences of working in war torn countries such as Cambodia, Iraq and Mozambique.

Hearing how this Nobel Prize winning humanitarian relief organization copeswith the challenge of doing such good work with very limited resources madeevery member of the audience realize that the problems we encounter in ourday-to-day working life are miniscule in comparison. His comments set the tonefor the rest of the conference.

The closing plenary session, "The Summit of the Rock" was also a very uniqueone. A panel of leading experts engaged the audience in a lively debate on awide variety of issues that affect "how we work" including the impact of technology, out-sourcing, research and development, education, innovation, thedecline of traditional industries and the need to improve Canada’s productivity

The annual CERC conference is also an outstanding networking opportunity for Atlas and its participating agents. We’re happy to report that as a Gold Sponsor, Atlas had a lotof exposure at this year’s conference which is very good forour agents and our brand. Our new display booth with the"Puppy" image and our soft, cuddly puppy giveaways were abig hit with conference delegates. A number of Atlas agentsattended the conference and were pleased to be able to bringtheir clients to the Atlas suite in the Fairmont hotel. It provided a comfortable, quiet setting to chat and do a littlenetworking. Next year’s conference will be in Niagara Falls,ON and once again Atlas will be an active participant. Wewould encourage our agents to consider joining us at thisimportant event.

Atlas Front & Centre atRoyal LePage’s Sales ConferenceIf getting in front of the right audience is the key to business development thenAtlas has once again, moved well ahead of the competition with our recentparticipation at Royal LePage’s National Sales Conference in QuebecCity. Atlas’ long standing relationship with Royal LePage, (one ofCanada’s largest and most successful real estate organizations)guaranteed that Atlas and its participating agents would be welcomed warmly to this gathering of over 800 brokers and salesagents.

As a major sponsor, Atlas was showcased in all of the conference materials, the convention magazine, signagethroughout all of the venues and in the exhibitors area whichmade for excellent name recognition. To attract a little extraattention, Atlas’ booth was refurbished using the new "Puppy"image. This proved to be a real eye-catcher as people made theirway around the exhibit area. The stuffed dog giveaways were ahuge hit with the delegates, so much so that to quote, Bob Clark,Atlas’ Vice President Business and Agency Development, "…we had abit of a feeding frenzy at the booth".

A number of Atlas agents took advantage of the opportunity to attend and meetmany of Royal LePage’s influential brokers and sales agents from all across Canada.Participants included:

Gary Kofoed, AMJ Campbell, Oakville; Susan Friest, AMJ Campbell, Mississauga; John McAdams and Mathieu Belanger-Grouxl, AMJ Campbell, Montreal; Francis Quinn, Trans Canada Moving, Montreal; Bernard Auclair and Martin Tremblay ofAMJ Campbell, Quebec City. According to Susan Friest, The Royal Lepage folks, from the conference organizing committeeto the president, made sure to payextra attention to Atlas Van Lines. “Itmade me proud to be a part of theAtlas Family!” she said.

It’s become a tradition for Bob Clarkto give a keynote address at RoyalLePage conferences in Canada andthe United States. Each year, theirdelegates look forward to his presentations since each one is trulyunique. Bob makes a supreme effortto create an appropriate theme for hisaddresses. His goal is to make themeducational and inspiring. Accordingto the comments received from bothRoyal LePage management and conference attendees, he managed totop previous performances with thisyear’s address.

Above: Always the "mover man", Bob Clark got behind the wheel of a truck to pickup all of Royal LePage'sconference materials. Atlas then arranged for their transport from Toronto to Quebec City.

Bob weaved the themes of competition, faith, teamwork and achievement into a truly dramatic performance which includeda professional choir. His presentation was dedicated to Royal LePage’s 90-year history of success and made mention of thefact that at the beginning of 2004, they signed up their 10,000th agent and will complete the year by signing their 11,000th;a remarkable feat by any real estate company’s standards.

Atlas Van Lines is extraordinarily proud to be known as Royal LePage’s "Preferred Mover". It is an honour we cherish and onewhich we work hard to deserve.

Atlas World Group ResultsBreaks All RecordsThe mood around Atlas World Group headquarters in Evansville, IN is most definitely upbeat these days. Third quarterresults are in and the news is very good. AWG is having the best year ever in its nearly 60-year history. Sales volumes areup 8% over the previous banner year benchmark of 2000. Overall, operating revenues are up 11% from last year.

The major source of revenue continues to be from Household Goods Relocations which represents 64% of AWG revenue.Increases were the order of the day from all three customer sectors:

Government +30.0%

Consumer (COD) +14.5%

National Accounts + 8.0%

It was especially encouraging to see the National Account sector rebound as the country’s economic climate improved. Ascorporate America’s confidence level increases, so does the volume of corporate employee relocations. Proof of this factwas revealed in Atlas’ 2004 Corporate Relocation Survey with over 33% of respondents indicating they expected anincrease in the number of employee relocations as opposed to only 13% who gave that same answer in 2003.

Similarly, all but one of Atlas World Group’s subsidiary companies turned in impressive results in their own right. The oneexception was the International division which has been impacted by geo-political events around the world. In spite of this, the International division still managed to be profitable. The increases for the other members of the AWG family were:

Cornerstone Relocation 15.0%

Atlas Canada 8.4%

Specialized Transportation 8.0%

AWG’s new logistics arm, BDS is proving to be a great addition to the Atlasfamily. Already they are turning in some healthy revenue numbers and arebusy establishing working relationships with Atlas agents throughout NorthAmerica.

To cap off the celebratory mood, we recently learned that for the seventhconsecutive year, Atlas has been recognized by Logistics Magazine as a GoldMedal Quality carrier. This ranking is based on the assessment of the peoplewho purchase our services and includes both our logistics and relocationservices divisions.

In his address at the recent AWG convention in California, Mike Shaffer,Chairman and CEO made a statement that clearly defines Atlas’ business philosophy. He said, "…We’ve known throughout nearly 60 years in thisbusiness that we can never rest. There is no stopping…no quitting. We

never arrive at a destination without asking ourselves…what is our next destination?"

In Loving MemoryLaurie Romman – 1941 –2004

All members of the Atlas family mourned the loss of LaurieRomman. A native of Filmore, Saskatchewan he developed astrong work ethic at an early age. He moved west to PortMoody, BC in 1964 with his wife Louise and his three children,Raelyne, Shawn and Rise. Here he became involved in thefreight industry. When his last child Grayson was born in 1971the family decided to move to Prince George for a better quality of life and it was here that he was introduced to themoving industry. In 1981 he incorporated Peace Moving &Storage. Over the years he was able to expand the companyand to include additional companies in Alberta.

Laurie was best known for his love of the outdoors, his senseof humour and his love of life. He is greatly missed. Atlas wanted a living tribute to Laurie and so in lieu of flowers, anevergreen tree was planted at Laurie and Louise’s lakeside residence.
