and making their dreams a reality. The
space now fully reflects the life changing work going on inside the

On June 6th, 2014, we moved back into our completed facility just in time for
our annual DanceAfrica, DC Festival. Through the wonderful design of Hickok
Cole Architects, guidance of our owner’s representative Richard Pilkinton
and hard work of Bognet Construction Company, we have expanded our
building from 7,000 to 10,500 square feet. Our totally renovated facility
now includes a greatly improved theater, second floor studio, wonderful
backstage area, expanded offices, inviting lobby, café area for refreshments
and vibrant exterior.
The state of the art Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation
Theater helps us serve artists, audiences and students with more comfort and grace.
Renovations include a new sprung floor, specially
designed retractable steel risers, comfortable theater
seats, hard-wired lighting grid, improved theater equipment and the enclosed Philip L.
Graham Fund Technical Booth. Behind the stage, our well-lit, spacious dressing room provides space for our talented artists to prepare (funded generously by an Anonymous donor).
Named after the Founding Director’s father, the Hyman M. Perlo Studio increases our capacity for serving artists with vital, affordable rehearsal space, provides a home for the Dance Place Step Team, serves as educational space for our teen Junior Staff program, as well as allows room for additional children’s classes and a new green room space for performers.
Our second floor expanded Prince Charitable Trusts Office Suite includes three enclosed offices, a new wing for our youth programs and production staff and meeting space.
Our bright new Howard and Geraldine Polinger Family Foundation Lobby provides a welcoming atmosphere for students and parents during daytime classes, professional dancers before rehearsal and audiences attending weekend performances. Café Florence is buzzing before the performances, at intermission and after the performances, as patrons enjoy their beverages and mingle with artists.
The outside our building with the Christopher Janney tower and “Touch My Building” installation is a favorite for children
and adults alike who are encouraged to place their hands on our building and enjoy the collage of sounds that respond.

“YES! ANOTHER EXCELLENT ART ON 8TH SESSION. BROOKLAND AND GREATER NE ARE FORTUNATE TO HAVE DANCE PLACE AS AN ANCHOR AND INCUBATOR FOR THE GROWING ART SCENE HERE!”

Enlivening Our Community
PHOTO: NIESHA ZIEGLER
As part of our capital campaign, Dance Place pledged
to raise $500,000 in our Program Enhancement
Fund to support new artistic initiatives that would
expand our reach into our growing Brookland/
Edgewood neighborhood. For the past five years,
we have diversified our presentations to include free
outdoor public art programming that includes dance,
music, visual arts and gardening.

RESIDENT
“YES! ANOTHER EXCELLENT ART ON 8TH SESSION. BROOKLAND AND GREATER NE ARE FORTUNATE TO HAVE DANCE PLACE AS AN ANCHOR AND INCUBATOR FOR THE GROWING ART SCENE HERE!”
Our Program Enhancement initiatives began with Dance Place’s Artland/Brookland Temporium in Summer 2012, supported by an ArtPlace grant awarded to the DC Office of Planning. Dance Place operated two 3-month “temporiums” in vacant spaces, transforming a former real estate office into the 12th Street Gallery and local restaurant Island Jim’s into an Arts Club. Following this model of free multi-disciplinary activities, Dance Place launched Art on 8th in Summer 2013, utilizing the Arts Walk at Monroe St. Market as a prime location. Now in our fourth year of Art on 8th, we have brought together almost 7,000 participants and 1,000 artists over 94 weekends, utilizing multicultural and family-friendly arts events as a force for community vibrancy and cohesiveness. Our free GET CREATIVE arts & crafts workshops continue indoors year-round.
Partnering with public, private and artistic entities, Dance Place continues to serve as a leading partner in Brookland/
Edgewood’s cultural and economic revitalization. We are engaged in extensive wayfinding and neighborhood marketing activities including: the installation of Art on 8th telephone pole banners; a first-ever Arts & Entertainment Map for Brookland/Edgewood; and an annual Fall neighborhood festival Be In Brookland/Experience Edgewood, in addition to our continuing Art on 8th programming.
WE AREN’T DONE YET!Our vision for a neighborhood “Arts Campus” concludes with the transformation of the vacant alley next to Dance Place into a creative gathering space, the 8th St Arts Park. Enabling us to expand our free cultural programs and increase opportunities for artists, the Park will be a site for public art commissions, artistic seating, flexible stage space, decorative surfacing for creative play and community gardening. The Park is being designed by Lee & Associates Landscape Architects, with leadership from a wonderful volunteer steering committee and funding from The Kresge Foundation. Look for the Grand Opening of the Park in 2016 and follow our progress at www.danceplace.org/arts-park

“It feels vibrant and exciting when
