This Sunday 11/17Star Trek Stewardship Series Week #2

Starship Enterprise as an analogy for the church… How could a TV series that only ran for three seasons in the late 1960s become,decades later, such a cultural icon, with eleven movies under its belt and five spin-offTV shows? Maybe it’s because that, beyond the phasers, communicators and transporter beams,Star Trek told stories about the strengths and frailties of humankind. Stories that spokenot only to the mind, but also the heart and the soul. Based on the book, “The GospelAccording to Star Trek” by Kevin C. Neece, this three-part worship series started lastSunday with the original 1960’s series, then continues this week and next exploring the

movies and more recent TV series.

Southwest Conference an amicus brief participantin Nov. 12 Supreme Court DACA case

Our amicus brief was filed in the U.S. Supreme Court on October 4, challenging theadministration’s rescission of DACA. Read the brief here. 127religious organizations signed onto this brief to protect hundreds ofthousands of Dreamers across the nation!

“As detailed in the brief, joining this effort is an extension of the amazing workall of you do every day to promote compassion and justice. Thank you somuch for lending your voices to the brief. We’re very grateful to be ableto provide the Supreme Court your perspectives, and we very much appreciateyour valuable support.

“The oral argument for this case is set for Tuesday, November 12 (some of you havetold me that you will be on the steps of the Supreme Court on that day to showyour support!). If the Supreme Court supports the administration’s decision to end DACA, hundredsof thousands of people who are Americans in every way but their status wouldlose the right to work and live without fear, and ultimately be vulnerable todeportation. We cannot let this happen. We must use our voices to protect ourcommunity.

Immigrant youth and activists across the country took their fight to the highest courtin the land, and on November 12, 2019, the US Supreme Court will hear oralarguments on the legality of the administration’s decision to terminate DACA.

As the Southwest Conference of the United Church of Christ (UCC) we are proud ofour progressive view of the Gospel and our mission statement, “extravagantlywelcoming and affirming followers of Christ called to embody God’sunconditional justice and love” is manifested in the ways we live out everyday.

The United States government for thirty years has failed to address immigrationreform by enacting legislation to protect families and those fleeing persecution andpoverty, and the federal government recently has stepped up detention anddeportation of ordinary people—not dangerous criminals—resulting in cruel injustice,extreme hardship, and family separation. We have therefore called upon the covenantpartners of the Southwest Conference to prayerfully organize, advocate, actprophetically, preach and teach about immigration justice, including local, state andnational legislation. Signing on to this amicus brief reflects that call to action.

The Box for November

WHY UNDERWEAR ? The Missions Team is asking for donations of underwear in November. Why? It is oneof the most requested items of the agencies we support.

We also know that this is the time of year that faith groups, social organizations, andeven businesses are gearing up for the giving season. Soon there will be turkey drives,food drives, toy drives and adopt a family opportunities throughout the valley tosupport those in need. We are glad people are so generous during the holidays andgrateful for the work that is being done. We felt since there were so manyorganizations working on food and gifts we would focus on underwear.

We know it not very glamorous, but to those in need it is very precious; so please give,any size, shape, color or gender, for the young, old, and those in between. Your missions team will see that they get distributed.

Yahweh Shalom, as we are lifting up in prayer oursisters and brothers in Morocco, we are thankingyou for your overwhelming peace in the midst oftroubled times, a peace that is available to us all,with no exception. Remind us that by standingfirm in peace, we will win life.Yahweh Yireh, we are praying for the ProtestantChurch in Morocco and all of the help they areproviding to the least of these – surely they arecontributing to the movement of wholeness in afragmented world. Please provide the resourcesthey need so that they can continue this important work of love, presence, andassistance for all. Remind them that by standing firm in their willingness to serve, theywill win life.Abba, we are lifting in prayer the new student pastors who are now serving in variouschurches all over Morocco. Please allow them to find strength and courage in this newera of their lives. Most of them are young and newlyweds, it will be hard to balance allof these new roles they will have to embody. Remind them that by standing firm inthese new roles you’ve assigned to them, they will win life.El Shaddai, we are praying for safety, health, and strength for all the dreamers who arelooking for a better future, not only for themselves but also for those attached tothem.
