A DIGITAL PLAN

Page 3: Movie Poster - Digital Plan

Why Have I done this? Like with my other ancillary task, the magazine

cover, I decided to create a digital plan as I found that, for the magazine cover, it was an extremely useful experience and piece of planning. By doing this, it will provide me with a clear understanding of where everything will go and keep me focused when creating my first rough drafts. However, like before, it will also help me to identify aspects of my idea that work and places where I will have to make changes as this is a great place to find out if certain things look good or not as well as identifying where improvements can be made.

My Decisions ExplainedI have decided to include various awards on my movie poster as it adds a professional edge: most movie posters feature some kind of awards of reviews. However, as well as this, it also acts as a great advertising technique as it shows the audience that the film is a success and is universally liked by multiple institutions: something which psychologically shows the audience the film is worth watching.I have included the tagline for the movie on the poster as it supplies the audience with a brief idea of what the film will be about without giving away too much or taking up a large space on the poster. Furthermore, it also helps with marketing as the audience will be able to recognise the film over various platforms and forms of promotion just by a simple sentence; the more that they see it, the more accustomed they will be to it.

Naturally, I have made the title of the film the largest text on the page so that it stands out and is clearly visible to the audience; in order for it to attract them, the audience needs to clearly see what the film is.

Here I have included all of the vital

information about the film and its

various institutions and contributors.

This is an essential part of the poster as

it not only adds a professional look,

but also gives them the credit which they deserve and require.

In terms of the layout for the poster, my intention was to keep everything very simplistic to match the simple, low production values of the social realism genre. This is why most of the text is all in one place instead of being spread out everywhere.

In terms of the image used, I have a lot of detail about my choice on my blog prior to this plan but here I decided to keep it as the only image on the poster. By doing this, it matches the simplistic nature of the layout and overall social realism genre; it keeps the audiences attention focused especially as most posters are looked at with just a quick glance. Furthermore, I also wanted to keep all of the text and other aspects of the poster away from the characters as they are the most eye catching element; covering them up would be unprofessional.

What I liked?

For the main areas of text on the poster – the title and tagline – I liked the use of the colour red particularly. This is because, in my opinion, it went well with the main image used and I felt that it was relevant to the genre of the film. For instance, instead of being blue, which carries connotations of calmness for example, the red connotes things more like danger.

One area of the poster that I like now that I have put it together digitally is the overall layout. I feel that it manages to keep all of the information needed on the poster but doesn’t ‘overkill’ it. For instance, having all of the text in the bottom hand corner provides space for the image to attract the audience and allows enough room to feature the awards without them dominating the poster.

I particularly like the use of text colours here as it manages to keep most of the audience’s attention on the actual advertising of the film

rather than to what them would be the ‘boring’ information. Furthermore, I like the

inclusion of all of the institutions and contributions as it makes the poster look

more professional

What I will change? One area that I will look to change on my for my first drafts will be the use of awards on the poster. Whilst I feel they are a useful and relevant contribution to the poster and that there placement is good, I will try and make the look more professional and ‘cleaner.’ At the moment, they are all different awards which means that they are different sizes and look different. By making them all look the same on the poster, it will make it look more tidier and professional. Furthermore, I will also look to actually change the content of the awards. At the moment, they are all random film awards and, to make the poster more believable, I will incorporate more authentic and relevant awards that focus on British and/or independent film.

One area that I will change for my poster is the font used for the main text. However, where as for my magazine cover I looked at a lot of different fonts to find the best one possible, here I will just use the font previously found. By doing this, it will make the two ancillary tasks link together and make my work more cohesive as a group of material. Furthermore, as for the text, the one I settled on will aesthetically pleasing edge to the poster and the youthful nature will make the audience make links between that and the characters: showing the young age.

For the credits on the movie poster, whilst they are needed, I will make them more realistic by looking at examples: making certain names and parts in capitals for instance. However, as well as this, I will also look to incorporate the relevant logos and symbols as they are missing here and are an important part of the credits.
