Expansion - adding details to the sentence.

The woman bakes bread.

Put students in pairs to try and rewrite the paragraph with better word choice. Have them count the repeated words and brainstorm other words that could be used instead.

Simple Sentence - The family is only a single adult. (IC)

Compound Sentence - The family is a married couple. (2 IC)

Complex Sentence - The family is a single parent with one or more children. (1 IC, 1 or more DC)

Compound-Complex Sentence - The family is a married couple with one or more children (2 IC, 1 or more DC)

Adults are independent, children are dependents!
