On Mount Kilimanjaro.
SHANE Pophfer has never beenone to back away from a chal-lenge, which is a good thing,because where he is going thereis no room for fear or error.
The father of three, ofCharmhaven, is teaming upwith his best mate and formerparatrooper Darren Wise totackle two mountains which areamong the seven highest moun-tains of each continent.
‘‘Darren and I met when wewere 18, when we were in thearmy in the 3rd Royal Aust-ralian Regiment or parachuteregiment,’’ Mr Pophfer said.
‘‘We lost touch for a few yearsand then when we met up againwe became adventurers andstarted paragliding and then wedecided to climb the seven sum-mits.’’
The action men kicked offtheir campaign in 2008 in Africaclimbing Mount Kilimanjarowhere they set themselves thechallenge of following thehardest route to the top.
‘‘We climbed the mountain ina record time of three days,’’ MrPophfer said.

arations for their latest ex-pedition, which will see themscale Mount Aconcagua inSouth Amercia and MountElbrus in Russia in just fiveweeks, Pophfer said they de-cided to use their adventure of alifetime to make a difference forchildren who are showing brav-ery beyond their years, with thepair hoping to raise $25,000 for

To get ready for the mammothtask, Pophfer, who is also agrandfather, has been undergo-ing intense training, carrying a
30kg pack along the hills ofCatherine Hill Bay.
‘‘If I asked you how long ittook you to run 100m you’dprobably say 30 seconds. Whenwe start climbing it will take usabout one hour to climb 100mand that’s with 150-200km/hwinds whipping around us andtrudging through snow and ice.It can get down to -30C.’’
