LEAVE YOUR LEGACY FOR THE MINISTRIES OF MOUNT OLIVET Create a list of assets owned by the decedent, which may include the following: Savings and checking accounts; Brokerage accounts; Real estate; Life insurance; Annuities; Retirement plans and IRAs; Business interests. Confirm how the asset is owned and obtain a copy of the account statement containing the date of death value, if applicable. Obtain copy of recent income tax return. Prepare an inventory of personal property. Make a list of creditors, if any, but do not pay any creditor until you have consulted with an attorney. It may be prudent to obtain a credit report. Contact insurance companies. Determine whether the decedent had a safe deposit box. Keep track of memorial donations, if any. Collect mail and make arrangements with the United States Postal Service to forward future mail. Cancel newspaper and magazine subscriptions and social memberships. A loved one’s death can bring on many emotions which can make it difficult to accomplish these tasks. You may wish to handle these or have a family member or close friend do them. If you have made a planned gift in your estate plan, or for more information, e-mail or call Mari Carlson, Director of Development, at 612-821-3150 or [email protected] One of the greatest gifts you can give your loved ones is to have your affairs in order. Complete your own estate plan while you are healthy. Prepare a spreadsheet of your assets and provide investment advisor contact information. Consider preparing memorial instructions and investigate whether prepaid funeral arrangements make sense for you and your family. The more planning you do now will make the survivor’s checklist easier to handle for your family and other loved ones.
