A Message from Our

Pastor Craig M. Corbin

Over the past several weeks, during the season of Easter, we have heard and read some very inspiring gospel texts along with the sec-ondary lessons. Most of our gospel readings have come from John. Personally, I find the gospel of John to be the most inspiring and up-lifting of the four gospels. The imagery and sense of promise that flow from this gospel give us much to reflect upon.

When we read the gospel of John, we get a true sense of who Jesus is and what his purpose was all about as he lived among us as the “incarnate” Christ. In some of his parting words to his disciples he told them, “Trust in God and trust also in me.” In one of my most recent sermons I commented on this “trust” im-perative from Jesus. I said, “Trusting in Jesus, this is what we have always known. It’s what we do each and every day of our lives, to simp-ly entrust our lives unto God and unto Christ.” I also said, this trusting in God and trusting in Jesus also, “empowers us, because Jesus lays claim to us and his promises of salvation and grace become and continue to be the corner-stone of our faith.”

I also stated and proclaimed, that “when we look to Jesus, when we take the time to really look to Jesus and look at Jesus, we see God.” And perhaps most importantly, when we look to Jesus and look at Jesus, we begin to see how Jesus sees and looks upon us. I reminded you and I reminded myself, because as I have stated multiple times, I have always been a firm be-liever that the meditations that I give are as much for me as they are for you.

June 22 in the Music Room.

Our Annual Mother’s Day Lunch was a huge success. Thank You to your Women’s Minis-tries Board for chairing the program this year, and especially Lois Scharnhorst for her assis-tance in putting the program together.

. Judy Thomas Emceed.

. Jill Ada gave our devotions:

Mother’s in General

. Several girls from our Youth Choir enter-tained us with a medley.

. Bryant Christensen {piano} accompanied Marcia Niemi and Liz Porter {violins}.

Also a big Thank You to the behind the scenes kitchen volunteers who prepared our luncheon plates, drinks and ‘clean-up’.

. A hostess from each table served their table guests which provided a smooth and quick delivery of plates for all.

. We started out with two tables full of deserts which quickly disappeared.

. Thanks to everyone who donated and par-ticipated.

The National WELCA Triennial Conven-tion is scheduled in July, 11-13, in Minne-sota. Our own Jean Anutta and Lois Scharnhorst will attend as MOLC repre-sentatives.

Speaking of Summer, this is your reminder our Ministries will be dark June through August. The Board will meet again the first Wed. in September at 9am. The first Circle meeting will resume on the second Tues. at 1 pm. Put these dates on your cal-endar as we look forward to planning the 2017 White Burro Sale {Oct. 26, 27, 28}, among other newsworthy events.

Due to the successful fund raisers of your Women’s Ministries, a new kitchen floor will be installed on July 5th by Cary’s Carpets. Cary’s is the business that did all of the floor-ing on our church remodel. Have a great and safe Summer! Pat Scheel – Secretary.

Pastor Craig Continued from page 1…

So how does Jesus see and look upon us? The words from I Peter 2: verses 9-10 say it most succinct-ly and eloquently.

“You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy but now you have received mercy.”

There is a hungry world that is still yearning and desiring to hear these words of promise. May the Holy Spirit inspire us and “kindle in us the fire of Christ’s love.” We are blessed for the journey!! “Yes, with the help of

God.” Pastor Craig

Grab your capes and masks!

You guessed it right! Our Vacation Bible School theme this year is Superhe-roes! Together we will help the children discover their Superhero STRENGTH in God! VBS will be Mon-day, June 12, through Friday, June 16, 6:00 to 8:30 pm. We have a variety of jobs, needing assis-tance. We will take your help whether it is for one day or the whole week. You can sign up to help in the Narthex on the Superhero board next to the main doors to the Worship Center or call Catie Sondrol at (928) 208-6036 or Jenifer Clark (928) 662-8764. We will have a volunteer meeting to lay out the flow of the VBS week-Monday, June 5, at 6 pm in the Friend-ship Cafe. On Saturday, June 10, at 9 am we need all Superhero muscles, strength, and power to assist with transforming the church into a Superhero village! If you have a Superhero in the making who is in the age category of "going into" kindergarten through "going into" 6th grade, you can register them on-line at: http://2017.cokesburyvbs.com/mtolive or pick up a paper registration form at the church office.

We won’t leave anyone hanging because we have a

super VBS program planned June 12th-16th please check out Hero Central!

Beginning now and moving through VBS and sum-mer any time the kids come by church we are asking them to bring an item to help us fill some backpacks for children in need. Those who donate will have an option to enter a drawing for some awesome prizes. Backpacks will be filled, and our own students have the opportunity to be part of Blessing of the Back-

packs. August 6th after service we will celebrate Sunday school Rally day. Be sure to look for more updates over the summer!

We would like to thank everyone for sup-porting our Youth this year and look forward to con-tinued support. It takes a village to raise a child and we are doing a great job together!

Keep an eye out for information this summer for Pop-Up events. We promise they will be fun so plan to join us. Remember that VBS needs our help so sign up in the Narthex for any time you can commit to. This counts toward your service hours required in Confirmation.

Start thinking about our BIG TRIP TO TEXAS in 2018. We will be putting together our plans for fundraisers, and getting ready to meet lots of new friends.

We are looking forward to an exciting New Year be-

ginning in the fall and meeting our new 7th Grad-ers as they join us. Be safe and enjoy your summer.

As always we are here for you if you need us!

Sunday School We finished a great year of Sunday school. Thanks to all our volunteers and parents for support-ing our children’s ministries. An unsung hero of Sunday School escaped recognition however, Mary Hawkins, without Mary our kids would not have had healthy delicious snacks at Sunday School! A huge thanks to Mary from all of us at Sunday school!! Sunday school is preparing for a super hero fun filled year coming up and we will kick off festivi-ties August 6! Blessing Backpacks at the 9am service. Immediately following service will be Rally Day! We will have registration available along with games, food and fun! Sunday schools first day will be August 13 at 9am. VBS is coming up June 12-16 at 6pm if you haven’t regis-tered or signed up to be a Super Hero please do. We need your amazing talent! The weather is starting to warm up and most of our winter visitors have gone back to cooler climates. Did you ever notice how many of our winter visitors become involved in service at Mount Olive while they're here? Many are involved in Bible studies, men's fellowship, woodwork-ing, music groups, quilting, prayer shawl group, Stephen Ministry, working at the White Burro sale, WOLCW, worship assistants, greeters and ushers, making and serving food, and the list goes on. I think part of

the reason for this is that serving God has just become a way of life for them and they don't take a "vacation" from serving. They have learned the secret that when you share your time, talents and re-sources for the work of God that you receive blessings. We are the hands and feet of Jesus here on earth and He's counting on us to share His love by serving others. We are each given time and talents and if we are willing to use them, God will equip us with what we need to accomplish His purposes. Most of us who were called to be a Stephen Minister began our training with reservations about our abilities but with the training, prayers and God's help we have 20 people who are now serving God in this way. We want to share God's love by being present when people are going through the "valleys" of their life. We are here to serve you and our ministry is available not only to members of Mount Olive but to our entire community. If you or someone you know might benefit from someone walk-ing alongside them, we encourage you to take that first step and contact Pastor Craig, one of the lead-ers listed below or any of the Stephen Ministers in our congregation who wear the blue name badg-es. Then one of our referral persons will meet one on one and thoroughly explain Stephen Ministry to the potential care receiver and they can decide whether they think they would like to have a Ste-phen Minister assigned to them. Hav- ing a Stephen Minister is not a sign of weakness but rather it's like giving yourself a gift!

Finally, "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers." Galatians 6: 9-10

Josh and Catie Sondrol will be traveling to Chiang Mai, Thailand August 9 through 16 to participate in an International Family Retreat through Joni & Friends. As you know, our church provides funding to the Tell Family who live in Thailand and manage the RICD Wheel-chair Project that supplies and adapts wheel-chairs and mobility aids to individuals with dis-abilities. Every year they have a Family Camp Retreat. Catie will be volunteering using her occupational therapy skill set and consult with the families and children. Josh will volunteer as a program lead for games and crafts at the camp. We will be ministering the word of Je-sus to these families. Janice Dewey along with her Friendship Cafe friends have generously volunteered to assist Josh and Catie Sondrol with their fundraising efforts to support their trip.

Watch for upcoming events!

"SIX LITTLE STORIES" (well worth your 30 seconds read!)

{1}

Once all villagers decided to pray for rain.

On the day of prayer, all the people gathered;

But, only one boy came with an umbrella.

That's FAITH.

{2}

When you throw babies in the air,

they laugh because they know you will catch them.

That's TRUST.

{3}

Every night we go to bed

without any assurance of waking up the next morning;

but, still we set the alarm clock to wake up.

That's HOPE.

{4}

We plan big things for tomorrow

in spite of zero knowledge of the future.

That's CONFIDENCE.

{5}

We see the world suffering;

But, still we get married and have children.

That's LOVE.

On an old man's shirt, was written a sentence,

'I am not 80 years old;

I am sweet 16 with 64 years of experience.'

That's ATTITUDE.

Mount Olive Lutheran Church Congregation Council Meeting Minutes-Highlights

Thursday, April 20, 2017, 7 PM

Meeting called to order by Leighton Kidder at 7:03 pm in the Friendship Cafe

Present: Catie Sondrol, Mary Ann Fleharty, Pastor Craig Corbin, Alice Hayes, Nello Ruscitti, Leighton Kidder, Susan Leifer, Rita Kidder, Jason Anderson, Dorita Bare, Dick Newark, Amy Conway, Steve Philo

Reports: Minutes from March: Jason Anderson made a motion to accept the minutes as written, Steven Philo second, motion passed with the following correction:

Clarification on when audit will be completed as in minutes it stated end of year. In February it was dis-cussed that it would be completed by end of May 2017. Susan Leifer reports that she talked with Mike Bonney, CPA’s office and they have requested a back up copy and close of year-end 2016. Susan Leifer will follow up to ensure the agreement is end of May 2017.

Minutes reflect that January Minutes were approved, however it should have stated February Minutes were approved.

Committee Reports: See written reports. Fellowship did not have a meeting. Mary Ann Fleharty reported that Social Action and Outreach are now merged together and their first meeting is May 1 at 10 am.

Pastor’s Report: See written report.

Treasurer Report: In the restricted funds report the debt reduction matching fund with a balance of $113.50 will be removed

and the funds will put into the debt reduction funds. Income is actually under by $3,000, quarter to date, but doesn’t reflect in page 3 of report. Cub Scouts now shows $1,000. Friendship Café food for fundraisers isn’t budgeted or forecasted for and that is why the number is high. Last page of packet Stephen Ministry expenditure of $664 needs to be in Wheels for Christ instead of Ste-

phen Ministry. Closing cost of refinance wasn’t recorded and that is being fixed so next month the ledger statement will

match Thrivent Mortgage Statement with $762,000 as the actual debt.

Audit: Leighton Kidder did sign engagement letter with Mike Bonney, CPA. Leighton Kidder will provide a copy of the letter to the Council.

Parish Center Painting: Susan Leifer received 2 bids for painting the outside surfaces and side doors (not front door) of the Parish Center. The bids were $2,801, and $2,730 these bids were from individuals with experience, but not professional painters, as they haven’t returned the calls. The stucco is flaking along the ground on the most recently painted walls. Susan Leifer will seek additional bids for that. The Property Board will need to look at how the water drains off the roof so that future stucco damage doesn’t occur. Nello Ruscitti made a motion that Daniel Brown (bid of $2,730.00) completes the painting of Parish Center out-side walks and side doors, Steve Philo second, motion accepted.

New Business: Sunday School Superintendent: Jenifer Clark is now the superintendent. It is a volunteer position at this time.

Stand Alone Sound System for Friendship Café: Pastor Craig Corbin reports that there are getting to be larger events in the Friendship Café. Amy Conway will discuss possibility of a booster for sound booth microphone with Dennis from Sound Bank.

Synod Assembly: Jim and Judy Day volunteered to attend on behalf of the congregation. We typically send 2 individuals plus the Pastor. No action needed.

Dean and Carol Hendricks: Alice Hayes will coordinate a going away party for them on Saturday, June 3 after 5 pm services.

Thank you to outgoing Council members: Amy Conway (running again), Rita Kidder, Mary Ann Fleharty, and Dick Newark.

Jason Anderson made a motion that the approved Council minutes be made publically available on Facebook/Website, Olive Branch, and placed in office, Mary Ann Fleharty second, motion approved.
