Queensland Music Festival has had an association with Mount Isa almost since the Festival began - and over many years we have collaborated with the people of this city to deliver events as diverse as Bobcat Dancing and Swingin’ Utes. All this music making seems to have had an effect on the culture in the Isa and now we see the inauguration of one of the world’s most remote symphony orchestras! This is not to be taken lightly and such an occasion deserves a world premiere, which we have in the form of Matthew Dewey’s Symphony of the Inland Sea. This wonderful turn of events is due in no small part to the unfailing support of Mount Isa City Council and the corporate community as well as the extraordinary hard work and passion of the music teachers and students of this truly cultural city. Congratulations Mount Isa, you are making musical history!

James Morrison am Artistic Director, Queensland Music Festival

MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

From humble origins, across the course of its history Mount Isa has proven itself an economic powerhouse, not just in Queensland but throughout the nation and the world. Shaped by our rich mineral bounty and remote, rural location at the heart of Queensland’s North West, our great city has earned its rightful place as Australia’s premier mining city. Today the Isa is an icon of industry, oasis for commerce and land of bountiful opportunity. Mount Isa’s stark desert beauty, breathtaking landscapes and unique events combine to create the thriving outdoor and cultural community lifestyle we enjoy today. We remain dedicated to making our city ever more liveable and creating a vibrant, progressive and increasingly cosmopolitan place for people to visit, and to live.

The Hon. Cr Tony McGrady am Mayor of Mount Isa

Lake Moondara; from the harsh heat rising from the rocky ground at Mary Kathleen, to the gentle light drifting across the hills around the Isa as the day moves to an end. The symphony pays tribute to a complex and amazing landscape, and celebrates the amazing people that live within it.
