Our red letter days remain the same each year so join us for the Classic Car Rally on the first Sunday in August each year – and don’t miss the fantastic Christmas Fayre held annually across the second weekend in December.

A land of romance and adventureMount Edgcumbe has always been a land of romance and adventure; it was from here in 1588 on Cornwalls rugged South Coast that the approaching Spanish Armada was first spotted and beacons were lit to warn Plymouth.

Mount Edgcumbe is a place of ancient barrows, mystical woodland, beautiful formal gardens, listed monuments, battle sites, forts, chapels and holy wells dotted along a remote coastline above secret beaches and smugglers’ coves.

The sea coast, river banks, open grassland, wooded valleys and sheltered slopes allowed the family to invent and reinvent Mount Edgcumbe time and time again. Rare, unusual and exotic plants and trees were introduced over hundreds of years all of which has led to the creation of one of the most diverse and magnificent Grade 1 listed landscapes in the UK.

The Edgcumbe’s developed pleasure gardens in the lower park and today visitors can travel through English, French, Italian, American and New Zealand gardens each with distinct planting, trees and landscaping. There is also a Jubilee garden, a relic garden, a rose garden and a fern dell. Mount Edgcumbe is also the home of the National Camellia Collection. Admission to the wider park and formal gardens is free year round.

General informationThe House and Earl’s Garden (including the Metta Catharina exhibition) are open Sunday – Thursday each week between April and the end of September from 11am to 4.30pm (last admissions at 4pm). The HouseMount Edgcumbe House (1547) was a pioneer building in the development of the great Elizabethan country home. Its revolutionary layout reversed centuries of defensive design with the house looking outward to maximise the spectacular views.

The House was struck by incendiary devices in 1941 and fire gutted the interior. The family rebuilt using the original walls and turrets and furnished it with possessions saved from destruction. Today visitors can enjoy portraits by Sir Joshua Reynolds, Alexander Stanhope Forbes and Nicholas Condy amongst a myriad of paintings, tapestries, period furniture and some of the earliest examples of porcelain made in Britain. Admission fee’s apply to House entry.

The Shipwreck Exhibition: Metta CatharinaAn ordinary ship, an extraordinary story During a storm in 1786 the Metta Catharina was dragged to her doom in Plymouth Sound. She lay undisturbed in the deeps off Mount Edgcumbe for 200 years before her remains were uncovered by amateur divers. Explore the story of the ship and crew, understand what life was like onboard and marvel at the amazingly preserved cargo and personal possessions. Shipwreck exhibition, admission is included in the price of a ticket for the House and Earl’s Garden.

The Earl’s Garden One garden – the Earl’s Garden around the House – was always retained as the family’s private retreat. It is situated on the shoulder of Mount Edgcumbe itself, protected from prevailing winds, and offers wonderful glimpses of the sea through a canopy of Mexican pine, Cedar of Lebanon and a magnificent Lucombe oak. This calm green space is populated with three summer houses and an extraordinary shell seat. The public are welcome to visit and entry to the Earl’s Garden is included in the price of a House ticket.

The Children’s Adventure Play ZoneIn addition to enjoying the wider landscape, the seashore and the woods - children can engage in healthy play amongst tree platforms, cargo climbing nets, bridges, stepping logs, slides and balancing beams.

Situated amongst the tree line of the Cremyll Shop’s picnic garden, families can now enjoy outdoor fun in a pleasant, safe and enclosed area.

The Cremyll ShopOpen 7 days a week from April to the end of September the Cremyll Shop can provide a quick snack, hot and cold drinks, ice-cream and those much needed essentials you forgot to bring along.
