FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear parents and carers,

At 11 am on 11 November 1918 the guns of the Western Front fell silent after more than four years continuous warfare. Today the staff and students paid their respects to the fallen soldiers with gathering at the Australian flag and a minute silence for Remembrance Day. Lest we forget.

Congratulations Mrs Buchanan, the school choir, soloists and comperes for an outstanding performance at the Westcoast Songfest. Mount Claremont was one of 27 primary schools to make a massive combined choir of over 1000 students all singing together. The finale Geronimo had everyone up and singing. There was a lovely level of self confidence in our students who had starring roles as comperes and soloists. Over the four days of the festi-val 4600 students were involved.

Every music teacher from every school collaborated over three workshops, many emails and school rehearsals to ensure a high quality musical pro-gram. The audience was full high praise and a quote from grandparents, “We’ve got 6 grandkids, been to many performances and this was the best yet!”. Personally I had plenty of “goose bump moments” too.

The recent pre-primary assembly reinforced an environmental message to rethink, reduce, reuse and recycle. They spoke, danced and sang to an en-vironmental tune as environmental super heroes. Well done Mrs Hender-son, support staff and pre-primaries you are all stars!

Today, we welcomed the 2016 kindergarten children and families to the school. Some children and parents are new to the school and they look for-ward to being part of the school community.

Before school play is working well. A reminder, before school play and su-pervision and starts at 8:30am and not earlier. Skipping is very popular and I am going back to my childhood skipping rhymes and the kids love it. Par-ents, you are welcome to join in and play.

It would be appreciated if payments for excursions, dance, swimming etc could be finalised by the end of November.

I would be delighted to see as families as possible attend the busy bee on

Sunday 22 November to spruce up the school gardens.

IXL MATHS

Congratulations to all students who have been extremely busy working on IXL. It is great to see so many high performances this week. Keep up the

great work. The reporting format to teachers has changed slightly and from now on the top 3 students from each class will be announced. The

data teachers are now receiving about each student’s performance is more in depth and provides a thorough analysis.

Music Count Us In 2015 ‘GOLD’

On Thursday 29th October at 9:30am our school community sang the Music Count Us In song for 2015, ‘Gold.’ We sang the same song, on the same day, at the same time as over 500,000 school students all over Australia. Music: Count Us In (MCUI) is Australia’s biggest school initiative, celebrating music and to promote music educa-tion.

Westcoast Songfest 2015

Last Thursday, 5th November our school choir members travelled to the HBF Arena, Joondalup to sing, as One Big Voice with 25 other Primary Schools Choirs, in the Westcoast Songfest. The massed choir rehearsal was in the morning and the concert was in the afternoon. It was a long day but the children had a wonderful time and represented Mount Claremont PS very well by following instructions and behaving respectfully. They remem-bered all the actions and joined in the singing with gusto!

Six of our talented students featured in this year’s festival. In the Pre-Concert Entertainment, in the Young Talent section, Minjae Kim played violin, Dominic Bertschinger & Fionn Pitman both sang while Dominic also played keyboard. Paris Millar and Josephine Lewis sang as part of 2 small groups and featured in the songs, We Can Build a Bridge and We Will Remember Them, and Sophie Murray introduced the song Happy as one of the stu-dent comperes. Congratulations to these students who all delivered outstanding performances. They all rose to the occasion and gave heart felt performances. I was so proud all our students as were their parents who came to watch. DVDs of the concert are available to purchase through Muse Media, for only $10. They would make wonderful Christmas presents for family and friends. You may collect an order form from the office. Please tick the date of concert box with the date, Thurs 5th November.

The Westcoast Songfest was first established in 2000 and is run by the Westcoast Songfest committee which is made up of volunteers (music teachers) and lead by Musical Director Donna Marwick O’Brien. Its purpose is to provide a positive performance opportunity for all primary school choirs in a non-competitive, fun environment.

Choir Rehearsals

Reminder: it is very important that all choir members attend all rehearsals for the rest of this term where possi-ble; Thursdays during school hours (30mins straight after lunch) and Friday mornings before school from 8am until 8:40am, in the music room. We will be preparing items for the Graduation Ceremony on Friday 11th December and the End of Year Assembly and Book Awards on Tuesday 15th December.

Mount Claremont’s Got Talent, Thursday, 26th November (Week 7)

Reminder: please encourage your children to practice and audition for this year’s Mount Claremont’s Got Tal-ent. All students need to prepare an item in their own time which they will perform individually or as a group in front of their peers during classroom music. We create a safe environment of ‘no put downs’ and students are given positive feedback and encouragement from their peers after each performance. Two to three items will be chosen from each class (K–5/6) to perform in the Grand Final on Thursday 26th November (week 7) commenc-ing from approx. 1:15pm in the undercover area. All parents, family and friends are invited to attend this event.

If you have any enquiries please feel free to contact me. My email address is: [email protected]. I work at MCPS on Thursdays and Fridays.

Sports News

T20 Blast Cricket

Yesterday a number of our senior students travelled to City Beach Oval to compete in the T20 Blast Cricket com-petition. We had 2 boys and 2 girls teams represent Mount Claremont PS against other western suburbs schools, and it was fantastic to see so many happy, smiling and dancing bodies competing throughout the day. One of our boys teams performed brilliantly winning all 4 of their matches by such a large margin that they were crowned champions of their division, it was a huge team effort! The girls also had great success, with one team winning 3 of their 4 matches and finishing 3rd overall in their division. Our other boys and girls team also competed well both winning 1 match each and were involved in some close losses. I would like to congratulate all students for their magnificent representation of our school, and in particular Devon, Darcy, Sophie M and Kya for captaining their teams so brilliantly over the day, Well done to all!

Thank you
