Motupipi School says, “Namaste Nepal!”
Last Friday, the 22nd of May, the children, staff and parents of Motupipi School held a gala to raise funds to help the
people of Nepal after their recent devastating earthquake experiences.
The day before consisted of an organised activity rotation of “family groups”; where each group consisted of around 24
children with a spread of mixed ages from 5 years to 11 years.
All the children participated in the range of activities including making prayer flags with messages for the Nepali people;
cooking a whole school meal of the traditional Nepali dish, „Dahl Baht” complete with a chapatti-making workshop;
drawing and dying vivid, brightly coloured candle lanterns; creating paper mache seed cards; team-mountaineering with
real equipment and learning the details of Sir Edmund Hillary‟s expedition of Mount Everest.
The Gala was a kaleidoscope of colour and activity as the children‟s prayer flags messages were carried on the wind to
the people of Nepal and screams of delight plummeted over and under the NBS Bouncy Castle. Stalls of all shapes and
sizes offering a variety of goods from pre-loved toys and clothes to a “Style yourself Up” hair chalking operation.
Participation events included, “Guess the weight of the mountaineering pack?” or “Guess the number of lollies in the
jar?” and a gruelling, highly competitive, “Sherpa Challenge” over mountains and down valleys, balancing on low ropes
and crawling through forests carrying a loaded mountain pack of course!
Funds raised amounted to $1632.00. Well done to the Motupipi Staff, parents and children who really put their hearts
into the event.
