Methanol – The marine fuel of the future (2012 – 2015)

• Conversion of a large Ro-Pax ferry to methanol fuel (Stena)

• Development of an engine conversion kit (Wärtsilä)

• Class acceptance of methanol as fuel (Lloyds)• Risk assessments of methanol fuel in the ports

(Port of Gothenburg and Kiel)• Bunkering facilities for methanol (Stena Oil)

Scrubbers: Closing the loop (2014 – 2018)

• Installation of closed loop scrubbers on Stena Britannica and Hollandica(Stena UK ltd)

• Improve knowhow about scrubber technology and how to handle resudies(IVL, Lloyds, Wärtsilä)

• Life Cycle Analysis (IVL)• Port single window(Stena Line BV)• Port efficiency (Stena Line BV, Port of Harwich)

Black carbon and heavy metal emissions are drastically decreased with Scrubbers. Closed loop offers environmental benefits. Soot amounting to Roughly 1% of fuel burnt can be recovered and disposed of/recycled in a responsible way by using closed loop scrubbers.

• Planning and implementation of an Action with multiple (not always directly related) activities;• You must believe in or need what you want to do.

• Focus on new technology implementation and/or infra structure development.

• Make sure it reflects EU policy and the call text.

• Support dissemination to other stakeholders.

• Difficulties

• To write a proposal is very complicated and time consuming. Some parts could be simplified e.g. the cost benefit analysis. If the excellence of the project can be communicated in another way, that should be enough.

• The needs for a ship owner vs needs in the ports are not always correlated.

• New business opportunities are hampered by the strict rules of core ports, comprehensive ports, transport corridors etc.

• Multi-beneficiary and multi-Member State involvement;

• The simpler the project plan, the better is the result. This is contradicted by the word multi-, thus we try to have clear and simple goals with one dedicated leader for each work package.

• A small consortium is probably more efficient than a large. The best way to avoid delays.

• Difficulties

• Short sea shipping is regional which makes it difficult to find/cooperate with partners in other parts of Europe

• Often the project cannot start until the Grant Agreement is signed which could take a big part of the first year. Plan for this!

• Coordinating a MoS Action;

• Is nothing to be afraid of, but it is time consuming

MoS gave us a chance to cut risks in early stage technology

• The cost of the methanol project (17 MEUR) could never have been covered with own assets. 50% EU funding made the difference.

• 10 Methanol fueled tankers were built for three different ship owners after Stena Germanica’s prof of the technology.

• I´m happy to announce that Stena just have ordered 2 methanol fueled 50 000 TDW chemical tankers.

It worked!
