Editors Letter

Spring is Here! and so is our September edition. This one is our

biggest yet. 54 pages in total.

Anyone who says nothing ever happens in the Eastern Cape needs

to be pointed in our little magazine’s direction, because its clear to see there is a lot going on

here.

We once again have a busy month ahead with some exciting events coming our way including East London’s Top End Run which is

sure to Wow the Crowds.

Speaking of WoW, there is also the Wizards on Wheels car show in East London which is always a

great event.

From the Port Elizabeth side, we have karting and main circuit

racing which we know will be great.

Thank you to everyone who has helped to bring our magazine to life this month. To our readers. Happy Reading, we know you will enjoy

BMSC Border 200

Saturday 1 August 2015 Saw the Border 200 race day take place at the historic East London Grand Prix Circuit. Coming off the back of both the Extreme Festival and the Super GP, this event would be met with

high expectations and once again, would not fail to deliver.

Travis Naude was the man to beat in the motorcycle category after blowing his opposition away with a blistering lap time in qualifying to take pole position ahead of Cameron Sweetman. Heat 1 would see much of the same as Naude cruised home to victory ahead of Sweetman who also had a fairly comfortable race. Gerrie Havenga took home 3rd in the

heat.


Heat 2 saw the status quo remain with another fine victory for Naude

ahead of Sweetman and Havenga, with John Quin coming home in 4th ahead of William Kew and Michael Botes in 5th and 6th respectively. This was enough to give Naude the overall honors on the day ahead of Sweetman and

Havenga in 2nd and 3rd overall.

REGIONAL MODIFIED’S

In the Regional Modified’s Simon Thesen seemed to be the main to beat after qualifying. Fresh from a solid performance at the Extreme Festival, Thesen’s red e46 BMW looked to be once again ready to

dominate. Heat 1 went the way of Thesen ahead of Bruce Butler in

2nd and Owen Naude in 3rd. Daryl Hall found himself in a race long fight with Nicholas Naude for 4th and 5th. Craig Harper and Shaun Miller were the next pair on the road in an intense battle for 6th and 7th. The next group on track to

finish in close proximity of one another was headed by Troy

Marais in 8th, Anton Ehlers in 9th, K Reynolds in 10th, Rob Rowe in 11th and Jono Stephens in 12th. Graham Montonera, Neil Stephens,

Shannon Barrun, and John Montanari made up the final

positions.


HISTORIC’S

In the Historic’s, Chris Blom was once again in fine form leading the

pack from qualifying. 2nd place went to Chris Landman ahead of

Daron Gudmanz in 3rd. Reece Thompson was in 4th ahead of Chris Radloff in 5th and Johan

van der Westhuizen in 6th. Brendan Smith was 7th ahead of Danian Staffen in 8th. Bradley

Johnson was 9th ahead of Graham Lessing in 10th. Gordon Bennet was 11th with Roger Howard in 12th. Derick boy was 13th ahead of Wayne Botha and Gary Schultz

in 14th and 15th respectively.

The Next Main Circuit Racing Event to be held at the East

London Grand Prix Circuit will be on the 5th of September 2015.


The 1st of August saw the start of a busy month for Eastern Cape

Karting with another round of the Algoa Kart Club championship. As

has become customary, the event was well

supported by East London competitors and for the 1st time

Kaylim Padayache made the trip to P.E and joined the group.

The Racing on the day was once again close and full of action throughout all of the classes.

CADET CLASS

In the Cadet class, Tristan Coertze came out guns blazing as he took wins in all 3 heats as he prepared

for the national. Ethan Jacobs came home in a solid, but hard fought 2nd place ahead of East

London’s Kaylim Padayache. Kiara Potgieter took the final honors on

the day finishing in 4th place.

60CC JUNIOR CLASS

The 60cc Junior Class was won by Kenzo Barnard who put together a fine performance to finish ahead of

Aidan Barnard in 2nd overall. Sebastian Smith fought hard to

finish 3rd ahead of Thaiyen Govender in 4th, while Kiesha

Potgieter took home 5th overall on the day.

CLUBMAN’S

Clubman’s A was won by Johan Stander who was in a class of his

own on the day.

a dominant mood as he took the victory ahead of Craig Borges in

2nd and Shabeer Fredricks in 3rd.

Arno Seyfert took the overall honors in Clubman’s C.

The Junior Clubman’s saw Cameron Kelly narrowly fend off

Kean Barnard for the day’s victory.

Clubman’s X saw Chad Evans take home the victory ahead of

Motorcycle Racing Veteran, Robbie Breakspear.

SUPER ROK

Craig Borges managed to take the overall victory in the Super Rok

class ahead of Chad Evans.

DD2

The DD2 class was a well-supported field and it was Wesley Jones who managed to

sneak home with the win ahead of Shaun Gradwell and Geoff

Stephens. The trio fought tooth and nail throughout the day in an action packed display. Craig

Borges and Shaun Vallance were also regularly in the mix and

came home in 4th and 5th overall respectively.

The next race will be held on the 5th of September 2015.


After heavy rains the week before, Victory Raceway was blessed with a perfect, but cold winter's evening for their Regional race meeting. Unfortunately the undersurface of the circuit was just too wet and the track surface could not withstand the forces from the race cars and

one heat had to be Scrapped.

Thank you very much to the folk from East London, who once again

provided valuable support.

JUNIOR HOTROD CLASS

In the Junior Hot Rod class, Laurika van Tonder crossed the line first in the Final, but Damon

Miles was awarded the win as a result of an incident on the last

corner. Damon is getting better and better and what a pleasure to see him do doughnuts after his honor lap. Laurika was awarded second and Petri Greeff a well-deserved 3rd with a car that is not as fast as

the two in front of her.

BEGINNERS CLASS

The Beginners class was complimented with 2 beautiful

Golfs from Border, driven by Carla and Amy Naude. Carla won the Final ahead of Amy with the only other starter, Letitia Renison 3rd in a Mini. Zandri Weitz elected

to withdraw earlier due to the challenging track conditions.

1660 CLASS

The 1660 class started off with Reggie Beldon losing a rear wheel in heat one and almost rolling the car. Daniel Renison was back on

track, but had bad luck in the Final on a challenging track

surface, leaving Percy Noah from Border, very little competition.

Enrico Els had a close call with a fire in the petrol tank area of his

Golf.


2.1 CLASS

In the 2.1 class, Pieta Victor drove a brilliant race to beat a very

determined Jody van Zummeren. Chanell Brink fought bravely to

finish 3rd in the Final.

Hot Rods

Quentin Ellard had to retire early in the Hot Rods with a broken

differential while Brendon Beldon also retired his beautiful Opel

Tigra. The Final was won by Percy Noah in his 1660 Opel Corsa ahead of Stef van Niekerk in his 2.1 Ford Fiesta. Ruan van Tonder raced the evening in this class and came

home in 3rd.

SUPER SIXES CLASS

Abri Pienaar was the star of the Super Sixes in his repainted, now

white BMW. Excellent close racing again in this class saw

Pienaar win the final ahead of Jan van Tonder and Brendan Fourie in 3rd. An interesting new entry was Johan van Rensburg, well known in the 2.1 class, but now in a very fast

rear wheel drive V6 Golf.

MODIFIED V8 CLASS

The modified V8 class was won by Pieta Victor with Johan Swart in second place. Johan continues to impress, although the Lexus V8 power cannot match the mighty


Chevy mills. Leon Ferreira did not enter and Johnny Weitz retired early in the evening with a broken side shaft. Ruan van Vuuren's ex Curt Alchin car went very well and has had some very effective visual upgrades.

Pity about the track conditions, otherwise the fans would have seen more exciting racing.

The Next Race will be held on the 5th of September 2015.


Round 5 of the BSCA Dirt Oval Championship was held on 8 August. It was truly a night of thrills and spills from most classes. Even the karts that

entertained during interval contributed to the thrills and spills.

RWD CLASS

The RWD (Rear Wheel Drive) class saw close racing and sideways action between all the drivers. Franqios Hammond drove spectacularly to take the overall honours ahead of William Hunter in 2nd, Cameron Hammond

in 3rd, Chris Partridge in 4th and Raymond Smith (who had technical difficulties and was unable to start heat 2) finishing in 5th overall for the

evening.

1660 CLASS

Zaine Knickelbein had the perfect night in the 1660 class.

Zaine dominated the night’s proceedings winning all 3 heats and the final. Delwin Crous drove

hard to finish in 2nd ahead of Andrew van der Westhuizen who also showed a turn of speed on the night. Jarryd Hurn survived a wall ride on the start of heat 2 to come home in 4th overall ahead of George Noah in 5th. New Driver

Dale Beukman put in a solid performance to finish 6th ahead of

Percy Noah in 7th. Unfortunately Percy had to retire early for the Night with car trouble.

2.1 MODIFIED CLASS

The 2.1 Modified class was one of the classes where the action

really heated up. Wayne Victor was an early casualty in heat 1 where

contact left him with major damage to the fibreglass front end


of the car. Heat 2 would see Wayne have a CV joint failure on the 1st corner which was also possibly as a result of the previous contact. Heat

3 saw an incident where Rene Stroebel got tagged, sending her spearing into her Father Gert and then straight head on into the wall. Rene was taken to the ambulance for observation, but emerged ok.

Gert’s car was eventually terminally damaged for the night along with Wesley Collins whose steering column broke and Allan Hurn who blew the Head Gasket. In the end it was Julian Herman who rose to the top and avoided the drama as the dust settled to take his first overall victory. Jason Prinsloo came home in 2nd ahead of Allan Hurn and Wesley Collins. Wayne Victor finished 4th overall with

Gert Stroebel and Rene

Stroebel in 6th and 7th overall respectively.

BEGINNERS CLASS

The Beginners class is not really the class that you would expect to have the most action on the night. Although the racing in generally good, the drivers here are normally quite calm with none of the drivers being old enough to hold learners licences either. This time it was not

the case though, as the majority of the action happened

here in this class. The biggest incident came in heat 2 when first,

Carla Naude lost her rear wheel spectacularly pitching the rear of her car into the air and luckily coming back to the ground. Then on the very next corner, Rudi Smith

and newcomer Viaan Mostert


unfortunately got locked together and were pitched into the wall at full speed which resulted in both cars spectacularly barrel rolling in tandem. All 3 drivers emerged from their cars uninjured after their respective incidents. This was not all for the night though as in heat 3 (with only Stephen Page and Amy Naude left in the running), Amy lost both of her rear wheels in a bizarre turn of events. This Left Stephen to take home the victory unopposed. Rudi Smith ended 2nd

overall for the night ahead of Carla Naude in 3rd. Amy Naude took home 4th place ahead of Viaan Mostert in 5th and Corbin

Holloway in 6th.

HOT ROD CLASS

The Hot rod class was a little down on numbers on the night with some of the regular drivers unable to race

as they are still busy with repairs to their cars. The racing on the night was still close and exciting though. Shawn Collins took victories in the first two heats with Derick van der Westhuizen coming back to take

victories in heat 3 and the final. Dylan Victor Suffered a stuck throttle and managed to do very well to avoid major damage to the car. In the end Shawn Collins did enough to take the overall victory

ahead of Derick van der Westhuizen in 2nd and Dylan Victor in 3rd. Percy Noah and

Jouwert van der Walt both had to contend with car problems to finish in 4th and 5th overall respectively.

FELXI V8 (AMS) CLASS

The Flexi V8 (AMS) class saw some awesome racing between Sarel Hattingh and his sons Arnold and


Ryno. Clinton Green was up in the mix with the front runners

(especially towards the end of the night) and this youngster seems to be improving every time he comes out. Gavin Frohbus Jnr, Willem Kirsten and Keith Frohbus all had bad luck with various car problems. Ryno Hattingh was 1st overall for

the night ahead of Arnold Hattingh in 2nd and dad

Clinton Green was consistent and came home in 4th ahead of Gavin Frohbus Jnr in 5th, Willem Kirsten

in 6th and Keith Frohbus in 7th.

Overall it was a very good nights racing and our next race is on 12

VW Rally 2015 17/18 July

Leeroy Poulter and Elvene Coetzee, the defending national champions in their Castrol Team Toyota Yaris, overcame extreme

weather conditions and treacherous road surfaces to slip-slide their way to victory in the 2015 Volkswagen

Rally.

The Toyota pair finished the waterlogged rally, shortened from twelve to ten stages as a result of the atrocious conditions, in a time

of 2:10:06.5 – beating the Ford

Performance team of Mark Cronje and Robin Houghton (Ford

Performance Fiesta) by a margin of 27.2 seconds after two days of tough rallying in the vicinity of Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape

Province.

This victory, following on their win in the Bela-Bela Motor Rally last month, further strengthens their

position in the championship, cutting their points deficit to log leaders Cronje and Houghton by

another four points.


The perilous conditions, with torrential rain turning the already muddy roads into mini quagmires, Poulter and Cronje were in a class

of their own, between them winning all the special stages, bar

one.

This stage victory (in the penultimate stage 9) belonged to a highly motivated Giniel de Villiers and Carolyn Swan (Castrol Team Toyota Yaris) who put in a superb performance over the two days, matching the two front-runners’

times stage by stage.

With the final place on the podium secured, the pair slacked their relentless pace in the final

stage – crossing the finishing line at the PEOTR oval track 2 minutes 13.9 seconds behind Cronje and

Houghton.

“It was very difficult out there today,” Poulter commented. “The conditions were really bad, and in some places the car aquaplaned and then suddenly found grip, throwing you completely off-line.

I’m just happy we could keep it together and secure the win.”

Driving a well-paced, sensible rally the NAD Ford Fiesta pairing of Japie van Niekerk and Gerhard

van Niekerk secured fourth position, well clear of the trio of

Sasolracing Volkswagen Polo


chasing them.

Hergen Fekken and Pierre Arries were the first of the VW

Sasolracing entries to finish. They were more than a minute behind Van Niekerk/Snyman after a very frustrating event in which they just

could not find their rhythm.

Behind them, team mates Gugu Zulu/Hilton Auffray and Henk

Lategan/Barry White, both suffering misfortunes on Friday costing them heaps of time, were

having their own little dice.

Lategan, relishing the wet conditions, went on a late charge, passing Zulu/Auffray in the final stage to finish sixth overall – 28.4 seconds clear of their team mates.

While the S2000 teams had difficulty coming to terms with the road conditions, it was outright terrifying and scary for the S1600 competitors. With only two-wheel drive and less power they had a torrid time trying to negotiate the route while not drowning their

cars’ engines in the process.


Paulus Franken and Henry Kohne (Manitou Group VW Polo),

leading the class at the overnight point after the demise of early leaders Guy Botterill/Simon

Vacy-Lyle (Yato Tools Toyota Etios) and Richard Leeke Junior/Rikus Fourie (ATS Ford Fiesta), stayed out of trouble to secure victory in

the class.

They finished the rally over a minute clear of Simon Vacy-Lyle and Schalk van Heerden (Fragram Tools Toyota Etios) – the only other team in the class to see the

chequered flag.

The conditions were not so kind to Tjaart Conradie and Tiaan Rabe

(VW Polo). Lying third in class after the eventful first day, their

VW Polo came to a halt in stage 8 with a drowned engine.

While still classified as finishers, they lost position to Leeke/Fourie and Marko Himmel/Gert Nienaber ((North City Panelbeaters VW Polo), classified in third and fourth

position under Superally rules.

Botterill/Vacy-Lyle, also competing under Superally rules, had to withdraw again, this time with a blown engine in stage 8, while Chad van Beurden/Nico Swartz (Jem Sport Ford Fiesta R2) were classified sixth in class, also

under Superally rules.

Piet Bakkes/Shaun Visser (Accident Guru Panelbeaters

Toyota Auris) was the only team


to finish in the NRC4 class, while Tjaart Coetzee/Anza Muller won the newly introduced Cup category

in their Volkswagen Polo.

The three factory-backed VW Sasolracing crews finishing fifth, sixth and seventh in S2000, a VW Polo crew winning the S1600 class and a Polo first in the Cup category

secured Volkswagen the Manufacturer’s title for the rally.

Q & A WITH SEBASTIAN SMITH

Sebastian is an up and coming Kart racer in East London, racing under the Border Karting banner. We have seen him in a few karts to date and

he currently races in the mini Rok class in East London and Port Elizabeth. He is an eager sportsman as he also enjoys sports such as cricket, rugby and hockey. He is currently having a strong season in

karting and leads the Border 60cc junior championship.


Let’s begin with asking you about your role models. With your name being Sebastian is this year’s new Ferrari driver on the top of your list? Who are your biggest role models?

Yes, Sebastian Vettel has always been my role model. I love F1 and when I was 5 I wanted to start karting like he did. I got my first kart when I was 6. I would very much like to grow up and achieve what he has achieved. Michael Schumacher, Mika Häkkinen and Valentino Rossi are also role models for me.

How old are you and what school do you go to?

I am 11 years old and in Grade 5 at Selborne Primary.

What has been your biggest sporting achievement to date and what would you like to achieve in Motorsport?

I came 1st in the 2013 Cadet Championship in East London. I would love to win the Mini-Rok Championship here in East London and someday


hopefully win it in PE.My ultimate dream is to race F1

Do you have any routines and procedures on the day of a race?

I always close my eyes for a few seconds and take 5 big breaths before every race.

Which Drivers do you enjoy competing against most and Why?

Kenzo and Aiden Barnard and Matthew Rowe. It’s such fun dicing with them.

What do you do in your spare time when you can’t be at the race track?

I play racing games on my PS3, and Five Nights at Freddy’s on the computer. I love to go kicking at Hams Club with my dad and walking the dogs at Nahoon beach with my mom.


I also enjoy it when we all go and play cricket in the nets at Beacon Bay Country Club

What is your favorite Brand of Car, and what is your Dream Car?

I like BMW’s – they are German so are definitely good cars. I have 2 dream cars , an X5 and of-course a red Ferrari

Which Circuit do you most like to race on?

The PE circuit is my favourite with all the loops, except the first loop. I don’t like that one, I have mowed the lawn there a lot. The track also has red lights at the start like in F1 so it makes it more exciting.

Which Circuit do you want to go to most?

I would like to try all our circuits out but the one I want to go to most is Idube. It looks so cool. I would like to do a National there one day.


On the 15th of August 2015, The Border Motorsport Club Drag Racing Division hosted a Dyno Day at Alex Motor’s in East London. A

strong turnout of both Spectators and participants were present on the day. The most powerful car that ran, was a BMW 135i of Ray Gise which generated 268kw and 571nm.

The Women’s Day weekend of the 8th and 9th of August was an

exciting weekend for the Border Karting Club as they took part in the Annual Koi expo with their own mini kart expo. Various club

members made their karts available to be displayed at the expo to gain some valuable exposure for

the sport.

The foot traffic on the day were able to liase with the karting fraternity

and gain some good advice and insight into the sport which will no

doubt benefit from thispublicity. On Saturday at 1pm the drivers took their karts for a low speed parade around the expo so

that spectators could hear the engines rather than just view a

static display.

Sunday had another twist as the club hosted a “Kleen Kart”

competition with prizes and bragging rights for the club

member having the cleanest kart.

I wonder how many people have had that feeling of wanting something so bad, and sometimes waiting for a lifetime (it seems) and then getting it and thinking it wasn’t

really worth it after all. Does time diminish that need or craving perhaps? The reason I’m asking is very simple. I started in 2007 with MX pics at the Border Motocross club, and like most sporting

clubs, they have their fair share of photographs on the walls. One

particular photo that caught my attention was that of a Jaryd

Geldenhuys (probably about 7 or so, or maybe a little older) standing next to his bike on the track in knee deep mud! Some other pics depicted a very similar situation

and some with this awesome mud spraying out the back wheels. Since then the rain gods have either thrown too little

or too much rain at the track. Saturday the 22nd August 2015 they got it spot on and with the BORC members down too, I was literally grinning like

a Cheshire Cat, with Luc Hannan even commenting “Ja Deano you finally got your mud race!” What made it even better was that race day was a super sunny day!

Perfection!

Now look, big boss Gerhard Spies wasn’t going to “bend” any rules hey? Safety was

his first concern and after consulting senior and junior riders and parents, we

were all set to start racing.

The A Stream riders were sent out first to “plough” a line through the mud (which was what it looked like to me). To see even the top guys battling like they did, we

knew it was going to be even tougher for the smaller bikes, and in Heat 1 Wade Wright was having a bad day with him putting the bike down at least 3 times (and in this mud that was probably the last thing you wanted to do as it just sucked

onto the bike making restarting a nightmare). On the other

hand, Gareth Green on his trusty red machine was having a good first heat and was slowly pulling a sizable lead on second man Christopher Renwick on the KTM. Shaine Webber was hanging in at 3rd place with Chad Howard scoring DNF after a hard fall in the bottom corner and injuring his lower back (was lying 3rd at the time).

That’s the way the first heat would end.

Heat 2 in the A Stream class saw Wade Wright keeping the bike upright and he

powered through to 1st place, just edging Christopher Renwick in to 3rd overall with Gareth Green taking the top spot (obviously very at home in the mud) and Shaine Webber in 4th overall for the day. I must mention that a big thanks goes out to Mr T Fernandez for lending his bike to Wade for the day (his Yamaha having some problems). I personally believe (and only my opinion) that Terrence heard his

nemesis from the mountains Sandy Wicks was coming to race and he saw a

“gentleman” way out of competing “lol”.

The B-Stream guys was a mixed bunch of local and visitors from BORC MX Club

and don’t forget TJ Simmons who is living in Port Elizabeth at the moment but popped into to come and play in the mud and still knows how to get the holeshot.

Ryan Moolman (the Bloem rider showing he is just as good in the mud as on his red surface back home) easily

took the top spot in heat 1 & 2 with TJ taking an awesome 2nd place in both heats, leaving Wesley Lockem and young

Michael Crisp to fight it out for 3rd place. Michael scored a DNF in the second heat

putting the yellow machine ofWesley’s into a well-earned 3rd place. Jaun Van Niekerk came home in 5th spot in

heat 1 but a DNF in heat 2

allowed Crisp to sneak home in 4th overall for the day.

With just 2 ladies competing, young Kylie Kotze (still in primary school) took a welcome 1st place in the second heat

giving her overall 1st while Wendy Jane Seton Campbell couldnt push through due to extreme muddy conditions and scored a

DNF in both heats.

The senior man on the day, Wayne “dude”van Vuuren went out to have fun as the only enduro rider. With the “Dude’s” many years of MX riding, this wasn’t to be the first time in conditions as these but

“The Dude” took strain (with me overhearing him saying that he thought he

was gonna “expire” at one time and at another time “ordering” young Chris

Renwick to start his bike after a wipe-out). Hats off Dude! We all appreciate your

enthusiasm for the sport.

The 85cc/pro mini class ran together, with 9 starters in heat 1. The marshals and dads were going to have their hands full. Titus Iveson on his 85cc took both heats quite comfortably with Cooper van Heerden digging deep and securing 2nd spot while TKY rider Chad Lundie scored a DNF in the 1st heat and didnt make the start of the second. This mud was very tough and as

hard on the bikes as it was on the rider.

The 65cc class saw 4 riders starting Heat 1 but just 3 managed to finish. Those small wheels were basically swallowed up in the muddy ruts. A welcome return to mx was

Breece “The Beast” Romans who together with Kyle Phillips and Titus Iveson on their orange machines battled it out in really tough conditions to finish the race as Titus once again going 1-1 Kyle 2-2

and Breece 3-3 in both heats.

consisted of a “newbie”, (Junior Enduro and 50cc Pro), Jayden Boucher on his No7 KTM. He did really well, in tricky wet conditions even after hitting the deck (or should we say the mud) in heat 1, and came back and finished his heats. Dad

Matthew Sparg on his trusty Honda not only won the Junior Enduro but also

powered ahead of the 50cc Pro class guys. At times Ricardo Monsanto was hot on his

back wheel. Matthew Mentz and Joshua Fletcher from Bloem tried hard to keep out local rider Merrick Collins, but Merrick squeezed in a hard fought 3rd

place overall with Matthew 2nd and Joshua 4th. The other local young rider

Damian Howard was ever consistent and came home in 5th place.

With KwikFit Beacon Bay sponsoring the awesome trophies and medals for the day,

much fun was had. Yes, some very tired faces and dirty as well. I heard the

pressure cleaner working hard the whole day. So did I have fun? Oh yes! Was it

easier to take pics in the mud? Well yes and no. There was no dust, but to get around the track and across it was not easy and the mud flying around from back wheels added another dimension to the dangers of motocross photography. Would I want another muddy race? Most definitely yes! A big thanks to all at Border Motocross

and to the riders and event sponsor KwikFit Beacon Bay. Without sponsors like these, events such as Motocross could

so easily disappear into the mud in the future. See you all at the next race day.

We headed up to Port Elizabeth on Saturday 22nd of August 2015 to cover the regional racing at Aldo Scribante Raceway. It’s been quite a while since I have been to the track and it really was good to spectate at the circuit for a change. We were at the track bright and early, just in time for the last morning warm up

sessions and the 1st of the Qualifying sessions to begin.

Coming from a fast circuit like East London it was a bit of an

adjustment to be able to sit in 1 spot and literally follow a car around the

entire twisty circuit. The Weather was good and we knew we were in

for a fine days racing.

Regional Saloons

In the Regional Saloons there were some great close battles. The tight

nature of the circuit really done assist in this as the cars are

never more than a couple car lengths away from each other. Class B was won by George Economides whose turbo golf is something spectacular. He was only beaten in 1 heat and that was by the Skyline

of Brent Watts. Watts had mechanical difficulties though and was forced to retire in Heat 3. This left him in 3rd overall for the day behind the BMW of Ian Riddle whose consistency had him well

placed all day long.

Class C saw Arno Loock take the top Honors ahead of Marais Ellis in 2nd, Andrew Raaf in 3rd and Thys Geyser in 4th overall. There was some really tight racing between these competitors throughout the

day.

Things were a little more settled in class D where Gerhard Oosthuysen took the victory with 3 wins from 3 starts ahead of Robert Langer who

was 2nd in each heat and Kevin Kelly who finished 3rd in all the

heats.

Steven Du Toit won Class E for the Day.

Historic’s

The Historic class is always an interesting class to watch. These old cars really do have a turn of speed and on a tight track like Scribante the racing is extremely close and competitive. Young Daniel Rowe took pole position for Heat 1, but it was Johan Barnard who took the

victory in Heat 1. Rowe then unfortunately retired the car for the day with a blown Head Gasket.


This left Barnard to take the overall Victory in class B unopposed for

the day.

Class C was a tight affair with Deon Gouws Narrowly taking the overall victory by a single point over Jeff Guscott with 2 heat victories to 1 on the day between the pair. Ryno Burger came home in 3rd overall

with Richard Rath in 4th.

Harold Webster’s consistency brought him home a comfortable Class D victory for the day ahead of a hard charging Dinesh Coopoo. Coopoo’s 2 heat victories were enough for him to edge out Kurt Ludwig who finished in 3rd overall.

Bikes

In the Unlimited Class Trevor Westman was the overall winner for the day ahead of JB Schoeman in 2nd. Arie Korf was 3rd overall ahead of an unlucky Jason Joshua

who retired in heat 3 with mechanical difficulties to finish 4th

overall for the day.

Trevor Wilson won the 600 Class ahead of Brandon Wilson in 2nd and Paul Roelofse in 3rd. Melt Koekemoer came home in a solid

4th overall.

The PSP Class saw Ray Wood take victory ahead of Malcolm Botes who fought hard to fend off Paul


Jansen. Greg Browne came home in 4th while Ivor Vermaak and

Johan Anker came home 5th and 6th respectively.

The Historic Motorcycle class was won Brian Ellard ahead of Ross Guscott in 2nd and Glen Kendrick in 3rd. Ifraan Johnson came home in 4th and William Kew finished in

5th overall.

Open Tops

Chris Cuyler dominated the open top qualifying session, but

unfortunately had to load the car onto the trailer early as he suffered a blown head gasket. This left the door open for the rest of the pack

and it would be interesting to see how the day would unfold. Jeandre Marais was an early

casualty in heat 1 as his car ground to a halt early on after he had taken

the lead. A strong recovery drive in heat 2 saw him take victory only to spin in heat 3

destroying his hopes of a podium finish. In the end it was Joel Steenekamp who triumphed ahead of a consistent Shaun McManus in 2nd. Rolan Killian took 3rd overall ahead of Jeandre Marais in 4th and

Anton Ehlers in 5th.

All in all it was a great days racing at Scribante. The Next event is due to be held on the 19th of September

2015.


Saturday 29 August 2015 saw the next edition of the Border Drag Racing Series take place in East London. The event was once again very

well supported by the spectators and competitors alike. Once again a contingent of out of town racers travelled down to compete at the event and we saw some rather quick times get run on the day as competitors

continue to strive in bringing their times down.

Another Round of the Supadrift National series was held at Dezzi

Raceway in Port Shepstone recently. This was the last Round in

KZN for the season. As the season draws to a close, the title race is heating up. We have seen reigning Champion, Wade van Zummeren of the Eastern Cape playing catchup all season due to

car trouble at round 1.

This Round saw Wade once again bring out the “New” Skyline. This

R34 Monster powered by the R35 GTR VR38DETT twin turbo is something spectacular to see. Wade

has had some teething problems with this beast, but in Port Shepstone he looked strong.

This was emphasized with a back to form pole position from Wade as

he carved his way through the hillside track with speed

precision and of course bucket loads of smoke. The Top 16 battle saw Wade easily overcome Mathys

Naude driving an e36 BMW powered by a 540i V8. He then moved on to face off against Jim

MacFarlane in a Nissan 350z powered by an enormous 6l Chevy V8. MacFarlane would also pose no threat to van Zummeren as he swiftly eliminated the Gauteng

driver.

Wade would then be paired up against his arch rival Jason Webb in his Nissan 200sx. The first run saw

Webb literally left behind in van Zummeren’s smoke as Wade

opened up a huge gap dominating the run. The 2nd run would be his undoing though as while trailing Webb, Wade missed a gear in his unfamiliar beast and

the slight straightening was enough for the judges to hand the victory

over to Webb despite the passionate crowds cries for an

OMT. (One More Time)

This meant that Wade would have to fight it out for the last spot on the podium against Richat Kahn. This he did successfully and by doing so is still in the championship hunt. Wade is now in 4th spot with 449 Points with Jason Webb taking the series lead on 486 points. With 110 points available per event, the fight is far from over and the title could

still head back home to East London.
