O perating a motor veh icle on N ational Forest Systemroads, N ational Forest System trails, and in areas on N ationalForest System lands carries a greater responsibility th anoperating th at veh icle in a city or oth er developed setting. N otonly must you know and follow all applicable traffic law s, youneed to sh ow concern for th e environment as w ell as oth erforest users. T h e misuse of motor veh icles can lead to th etemporary or permanent closure of any designated road, trail,or area. As a motor veh icle operator, you are also subject toState traffic law , including State requirements for licensing,registration, and operation of th e veh icle in question. Motor veh icle use, especially off-h igh w ay veh icle use,involves inh erent risks th at may cause property damage,serious injury, and possibly death to participants. Drivecautiously and anticipate rough surfaces and features, such assnow , mud, vegetation, and w ater crossings common to remotedriving conditions. By your participation, you voluntarily assumefull responsibility for th ese damages, risks, and dangers. T akecare at all times to protect yourself and th ose under yourresponsibility.

PURPOSE AND CONTENTS OF THIS MAP T h e designations sh ow n on th is motor veh icle use map(MV U M) w ere made by th e responsible official pursuant to 36CFR 212.51; are effective as of th e date on th e front cover ofth is MV U M; and w ill remain in effect until superceded by nextyear's MV U M. It is th e responsibility of th e user to acquire th e currentMV U M. T h is MV U M sh ow s th e N ational Forest System roads,N ational Forest System trails, and th e areas on N ational ForestSystem lands in th e H O O N AH R AN G ER DIST R ICT th at aredesignated for motor veh icle use pursuant to 36 CFR 212.51.T h is MV U M also identifies th e veh icle classes allow ed on eachroute and in each area; and any seasonal restrictions th at applyon th ose routes and in th ose areas. Designation of a road, trail, or area for motor veh icle use bya particular class of veh icle under 36 CFR 212.51 sh ould not beinterpreted as encouraging or inviting use or implying th at th eroad, trail, or area is passable, actively maintained, or safe fortravel. Motor veh icle designations include parking alongdesignated routes and at facilities associated w ith designatedroutes w h en it is safe to do so and w h en not causing damage toN ational Forest System resources. Seasonal w eath erconditions and natural events may render designated roads andtrails impassable for extended periods. Designated areas maycontain dangerous or impassable terrain. Many designatedroads and trails may be passable only by h igh -clearanceveh icles or four-w h eel-drive veh icles. Maintenance ofdesignated roads and trails w ill depend on available resources,and many may receive little maintenance. T h is motor veh icle use map identifies th ose roads, trails,and areas designated for th e motor veh icle use under 36 CFR212.51 for th e purpose of enforcing th e proh ibition at 36 CFR261.13. T h is is a limited purpose. T h e oth er public roads aresh ow n for information and navigation purposes only and arenot subject to designation under th e Forest Service travelmanagement regulation. V iolators of 36 CFR 261.13 are subject to a fine of up to$5,000, imprisonment for up to 6 month s or both (18 U .S.C.3571(e)). T h is proh ibition applies regardless of th e presence orabsence of signs. T h is map does not display nonmotorized uses, over-snowveh icle uses, or oth er facilities and attractions on th e H O O N AHR AN G ER DIST R ICT . O btain forest visitor information from th elocal national forest office. Designated roads, trails, and areas may also be subject totemporary, emergency closures. As a visitor, you must complyw ith signs notifying you of such restrictions.
