MOTIVATION

•Why was SCUBA not used to try and locate the titanic?

Why was SCUBA not used to locate the titanic?• The titanic was 2.5 miles deep, the crushing effects of deep-sea pressure and a

limited air supply prevent scuba divers from attaining great depths. • Scientists used submersibles-steel hulled vehicles designed for underwater research.

A submersibles thick hull(bottom of boat) and larger air supply enable researchers to dive deeper.

• The TITANIC WAS LOCATED using submersibles

• GUESS THE AIM??????

AIM: HOW WAS THE TITANIC LOCATED?• Instructional objectives• 1. Explain how the titanic was finally located • 2. Describe some of the technology used in locating titanic.• 3. Identify other technologies used in underwater exploration

How well did people explore using the early submersibles?

How well did people explore using early submersibles?• In 1934, American oceanographer DR. WILLIAM BEEBE, reached a depth of 900

meters in a steel chamber called a bathysphere• In 1960 the swiss team of Auguste and Jacques Piccard made the deepest dive in a

submersible to the bottom of the Mariana Trench(10,852 meters). In the BATHYSCAPHE

BATHYSCAPHE-Trieste late1950’s-1960• Jacques Piccard went 10582 meters deep or about 6.6 miles into the marianas trench

• Deepest dive ever recorded

VOCABULARY• Aquanaut-a person who explores under the oceans surface• Inner space-what is found beneath the oceans surface• Submersible-underwater vehicle or submarine• Robots-mechanical objects that are connected and controlled by a surface ship or

submarine

How do modern submersibles explore the ocean floor?

Page 10: MOTIVATION Watch titanic video NOTICE THE EQUIPMENT AND TECHNOLOGY USED DESCRIBE TECHNOLOGY IN VIDEO

Dr. Sylvia Earle 1979• Deepest solo dive to a depth of 380m• In a special jim suit that is tethered to a surface ship• Dr. Earle lives and teaches in Hawaii

ALVIN the submersible• Modern submersible with advanced technology• Logged over 900 research dives

ROBOTS• Unmanned vehicles, called robots, are used for exploring in the deepest parts of the

ocean. The robot Argo was tethered to a surface ship and used to photograph Titanic.

• The robot Jason, tethered to the Alvin, photographed the Titanic’s interior.

How is Ocean depth determined?• SONAR• Depth of sound wave x time divided by 2• D=s x t divided by 2• D=st/2• SOund NAvigation and Ranging• Actual speed of sound wave is 1454m/sec• Use the # 1500 for practical sense

• SHOW ILLUSTRATION• ACTIVITY SHEET

Who located the final resting place of the TITANIC?

Page 17: MOTIVATION Watch titanic video NOTICE THE EQUIPMENT AND TECHNOLOGY USED DESCRIBE TECHNOLOGY IN VIDEO

Who located the final resting place of the Titanic?• Dr. Robert Ballard in 1985 located the titanic 2.5 miles deep on the North Atlantic

seafloor• He used sonar and robots to locate it• Alvin the submersible• Robots Jason and Argo were used to study the ship

SUMMARY• The development of advanced technology, in the form of submersibles, robot

vehicles, and sonar equipment, has culminated in such achievements as finding the sunken Titanic 3600 meters deep.

EXIT QUIZ• 1.Which scientist went underwater in the bathysphere?

A. Cousteau B. Earle C. Ballard D. Beebe?• 2. Describe some equipment used to locate and videotape the Titanic in a few

sentences.

• 3. why wasn’t SCUBA used to locate the Titanic?
