Thank you!The following slides include information from a separate handout given to those attending the presentation at TESOL New Orleans Conference
What is Skype?Have you ever used Skype? [Do you know of others who have used Skype and talked with you about it?] ~ Did you start the call or join the call (or both)? ~ Or did you just text chat, sending IMs? [IM = instant message]
~ one-to-one chat or group chats (or both)? ~ text, audio, webcam? ~ personal use? pleasure/social use? professional use? professional development? with students?Have you ever downloaded Skype?Do you know if Skype has already been downloaded on your computer? (at work? at home?)What do you need to have to use Skype (minimum requirements?) What are some of the reasons you might want to consider using Skype? What are some of the challenges to using Skype? (for you, for students, for colleagues)?
Motivate and Energize with Skype! Questions you might consider:
QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT ASK STUDENTS DURING OUR LIVE CHAT!
1. How have Skype classes helped you gain confidence and competence in your English language learning and practice?
2. What types of Skype classes have you participated in? What have you liked or not liked about them?
3. What advice do you have for teachers new to using Skype?
4. What questions would you like to ask me?
5. Have you ever been to New Orleans? What places would you recommend I be sure to try and see? If you were going to visit New Orleans, what would you want to be sure to see and do?
Motivate and Energize with Skype! Questions you might consider:
Tips! • Remember “wait time” = always an important consideration = during a
Skype chat “wait time” silences are really “loud”/awkward – but rewarding! I find that IF I make myself stay silent, students feel mandated to “fill the air space” by replying – it works!
• Record your Skype chats (use Pamela or other tools) • Ask participants to type a “T” or “C” if they want a turn to talk or
comment – (or Q if they want to ask a question) so all can see who wants to speak, and can help monitor the order in which people speak.
• Sometimes there are “quiet ones” – people in a chat who do not appear to be participating (vocally or with IMs) – sometimes I’ll open up a private chat Skype window with just me and that person – and ‘coax’ them into sharing – other times I’ll type a note with a direct question to that person – some simple way of letting him/her know that I know they are there, that their presence is valued
Motivate and Energize with Skype! Questions you might consider:
Tips! • Share the responsibility for ensuring all have a turn [be upfront about
expectations / community (as with any classroom, establish ‘rules’/respect/rights/responsibilities – in classes I facilitate, this includes the responsibility of every participant to help everyone in the group feel ‘heard’
• Skype allows for screensharing (1:1 Skype chats), share documents, photos, PDFs, more (share file)
• Review what others have done – several links here: http://www.diigo.com/user/blogblossoms/skype and http://www.diigo.com/user/blogblossoms/skypehowto
• Skype has been a very rewarding way to encourage beginner speakers -- IF they have the access and orientation and comfort level with technology [Skype is MUCH easier than many other tools for many learners = is similar to texting / cell phone / seems fun (affective filter)]

Another idea to share ~ • At last year’s TESOL conference, I saw another
attendee use a different sort of ‘business card’ – one created especially for the conference.
• I really liked the idea, and ‘stole’ it for this year’s conference.
• The following two slides show the front and back of info cards I gave out at this year’s conference.
• If you like this idea, feel free to adapt for your own use at future conferences.
