Case Study: Tomato Conveyors - D&D Engineering, uKone of D&D Engineering’s customers was john Baarda Ltd, a company specialising in the growing of tomatoes. john Baarda Ltd needed to replace its current tomato handlingconveyorsystem, whichusedinefficientchains and sprockets, with a solution that would allow it to pack tomatoes more quickly and accurately while allowing quality inspection of the tomatoes.
ABB servo motors controlled by ABB high performance machinery drives were used to match the speed of the tomato handling conveyors to the speed of the packing machine. ABB component drive were used to control rollers on the conveyors, allowing the tomatoes to be turned for inspection.

Case Study: Biscuit Machine - Bake-o nomic, IndiaBiscuit making is a continuous process, with a number of stages feeding into each other, it is important that each stage is controlled at its own appropriate speed. All the machines, such as biscuit cutting, forming, ovens and cooling conveyors are linked to each other, accepting materials or part processed biscuits and passing them on to the next stage. As each type of biscuit has a different baking time, there needs to be areliableandefficientwaytovarythespeedofthevarious parts of the process. An example is mixing, which is done in two stages. Shortenings and sugar are mixedathighspeedandsubsequentlyflourisaddedand mixed at a slow speed.
About 20 drives were used in a single biscuit making line, most of them below 5.5 kW, although for mixers, drives as large as 30kW can be used. Above 0.75 kW, ABB standard drives are used, while below this power ABB machinery drives are used.
ABB Drives’reliability proves criticalin manufacturing
Drives bring innovative solutions to the oil and gas industries where the need to reduce rising costs and optimise production has never been more critical.
use of ABB drives can:•run equipment at its optimum operating points.•Improve product quality by adjusting the speed precisely
to optimise the operation of process machinery.•Easily convert rotating power, sync to grid frequency and
feedback into the supply network.•reduce starting impact on network and machinery.
Dedicated HVAC drives are programmed with several HVAC applications, including supply and return fans, cooling tower fans, booster pumps and condensers.
