MOTHER’S DAYwatercolor
CRAFT & POEM
In order to complete this project in one day, you will want to paint FIRST.
DIRECTIONS for the art:
1. Using a black (or dark colored crayon), students draw simple flower shapes.
2. The bigger the flower and the less detail they draw, the easier they are to
paint! I suggest each student make 8-10 flowers, and about 6-8 flowers
should take up one piece of paper.
3. Flowers should be drawn spread apart so that they have room to paint each
flower.
4. Students do NOT need to draw stems. The flowers will be cut out and
layered in the “pot” so that stems won’t show anyway (and they are tricky
to cut out!)
5. After drawing the flowers, students water color the petals.
6. While the flowers are drying, students cut out a pot. They can create their
own pot/vase, or you can copy the simple template provided onto colored
paper (or onto cardstock to create something for them to trace.)
7. When dry, students cut out the flowers and layer them into the pot so that
it appears to be a full bouquet of flowers!
8. Glue the pot down onto bright paper first, and then glue the flowers down
one by one.
DIRECTIONS for the poem:
1. Depending on the child’s age, you may want students to fill out the top
poem first so that they can edit for spelling. The bottom one can be used
as the Final Draft. OR, cut the pages in half for younger students.
2. Students complete the poem with answers that are all about their mom
(grandma, aunt, or nana.)
3. Cut out the poem and glue to the center of the pot/vase.
Happy Mother’s Day !

MaterialsEach item listed is per student:
• Water color paints
• Paintbrush
• Sheet of construction paper for background
• Sheet of construction paper for pot/vase
• Pot template (if using)
• Black or dark colored crayon
• 2 pieces of white construction/painting paper for drawing
flowers
• Glue stick
• Scissors
• Poem templateBy popular demand, I have included a ”template” of hand-drawn, simple flowers! This can be used in a variety of ways.
1. You can copy the flowers for students to cut out and paint. (They will likely need copies of both sheets so they have enough flowers to fill their pot.)
2. You can use the templates to show students the simple kinds of flowers they can draw themselves.
3. The templates can be used for you to create a sample.4. The templates can be copied onto a few pieces of cardstock
and used as “tracers” for students needing help with drawing the shapes.
