Metered Market Close-Up: Baltimore, MD (DMA Rank #26)
With hundreds of identified districts, Baltimore has been dubbed "a city of neighborhoods". It surrounds a major inland port on the upper
portion of the Chesapeake Bay, with prosperous shipping, transportation, and manufacturing industries among others. Many areas of the
city, particularly downtown, have experienced a vast renewal with a strong emphasis on historic preservation. The restored waterfront
adjacent to the rather ordinary downtown is now a commercial and leisure destination with excellent museums, a first class aquarium and
plenty to do. Transportation has always been one of the city’s strengths. Baltimore is one of the few East Coast destinations of discount
carrier Southwest Airlines. Train service and interstate highways make Washington D.C., New York, and other cities along the Northeast
Corridor easily accessible. The city is home to the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Other large companies in Baltimore include Under Armour, BRT
Laboratories, Cordish Company, Legg Mason, McCormick & Company, T. Rowe Price, and Royal Farms.
• Baltimore was the first city to implement a 311
service as a non-emergency hotline.
• Francis Scott Key wrote the National Anthem while
watching the bombardment of Fort McHenry during
the War of 1812.
• Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all
time (he holds 22 medals), was born in Baltimore.
• During the 1800s, Baltimore served as the second
greatest port of entry for United States immigrants.
