HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT IDENTIFYING THISPROBLEM?

GBV and children with disabilities

are not taken seriously such thattheir cases are pending in thecourts of law.

Their independence is questionedin all spheres of life.

They cannot even account fortheir own stories because they aredenied their right to do so.

There are no reportingmechanisms conducive for peopleof this nature from the police to

the judges.

IS THIS ISSUE IMPORTANT?

It is because there are differentdegrees of mental retardationfrom moderate to profound.

Those that are moderate are ableto relate every thing but needs

assistance here and there. For justice to be served, we found

it fitting for them to be given achance to relate and expressthemselves on issues that concernthem as people with mentaldisabilities.PR

HOW ARE YOU GOING ABOUT ADDRESSING THIS PROBLEM?

We are lobbying parents, NGOs,Parliamentarians, teachers etc forsupport in advocating for changein the judicial system and thepolice to accommodate people

with mental disabilities in thequest for justice.

We intend to have forums todebate and finally come up withlaws that support children withmental disabilities and their rights.

WHAT IS THE TIME-FRAME FOR THE PROJECT?

The project will run for two yearsand beyond, with the hope thatwe would have paved a wayforward for them (Children) to beable to comprehend how to

protect themselves against GBVperpetrators, and know what theyare faced with and how torespond to GBV.

It is a lifetime as more childrenwith mental disability are bound to

be born due to various causes.

We are currently financingourselves as many privatecompanies declined due tofinancial constraints.

CREATIVITY: ARE YOU USING ARTS, CULTURE, MEDIA AND SOCIALMEDIA TO POPULARISE THE ISSUES?

We are using different forms ofmedia to mobilize and popularizethis issue. Some parliamentariansare also members of the disabilitycoalition group but do not

understand fully what we areadvocating for.

MONITORING AND EVALUATION

We have devised a monitoring andevaluation programme.

We visit the beneficiaries onceevery month and themassessment (occupational and

other wise), unless there arepressing issues to be addressed.

We right reports and evaluateprogress, even suggesting whatnext to be done.P

WHAT RESULTS HAVE BEEN ACHIEVED?

We have achieved a lot and goodresults are yielding.

The mentally disable and parentsare now able to report GBV casesand we make follow-ups.

Some lawyers are even reviewingthe way the handle these cases.

Police structures and courts arealso trying to have conduciveenvironments that will be friendlyto the mentally disabled.

SUSTAINABILITY AND REPLICATION

Yes it is sustainable and can bereplicated by others given thesituation in Lesotho, wherechildren and people with mentaldisabilities are vulnerable andtaken advantage of.

They are exploited, ill treated andare prone GBV.

LESSONS LEARNED

That the mentally disabled areabandoned and there are nospecific laws that protect andregulate the lives of people withmental disabilities.
