Fr. Adam’s Corner
Dear Parishioners: To keep you up to date on our buildings, I am sorry to say we have discovered mold in several rooms in the parish rectory. As I write this we do not yet know much about this situation, but we are working to find out the extent of it and what course of action will need to be taken. This needs to be dealt with thor-oughly and as quickly as possible for the health and wellbeing of our staff and myself. I’ll keep you updated as we learn more. As our nation once more observers Veteran’s Day the week-end, I add my prayers for and thanks to all of you who have served our nation with honor and distinction. Your service is appreciated and will never be forgotten. I pray God to reward you with many blessings! In the prayer of the Liturgy of the Hours, specifically the Hour of the Office of Readings, the Church currently has begun reading the book of Maccabees. In this Old Testament book, which takes place just after the reign of Alexander the Great, in the 2nd century BC, the Jewish practice of religion is outlawed and many of the Jewish people fall once more into apostasy, forsaking the covenant and taking up the immoral pagan prac-tices of the pagan Greeks. Even the temple in Jerusalem is de-filed by pagan worship. There remains however a faithful remnant, led by Mattathias and his son Judas Maccabeus, who fight to preserve their fideli-ty to the covenant to the one true God. I encourage you to read both 1st and 2nd Maccabees, as they remain a powerful exam-ple to us of remaining faithful to the Lord while living during a pagan occupying force. Judas is a warrior who takes up arms to defend the practice of true worship. We are also called to be warriors, who take up the sword of right reason to defend the free practice of true religion. We, like the Maccabees, are living in the midst of a pagan occu-pation of our land. To defend against it we must pray and study our faith so that we can withstand the constant barrage of lies we are subject to in the pop culture of today. We are even tempted to accept the desecration of the temple, the temple of the human body, which is made wonderful by God and be-stowed on us as a gift, not for immorality but for becoming the Temples of the Holy Spirit. The “Temple” today is being de-filed by acts of abortion, of sexual perversion, promiscuity and immodesty. The “Temple” is being defiled by greed and by violence. None of these acts are new to humanity. What a more modern twist is to say that these acts are not immoral, but rather the result of a kind of new and enlightened view of humanity and the world. This is the great danger for all of us, to be co-opted into think-ing that perhaps some of these things, which are gravely immor-al, are not all that bad, to live with them as so many of the Cho-sen People accepted the pagan practices of their neighbors. But like Judas Maccabeus and his companions, we must resist the temptation to go along to get along. For us, like for them, it will undoubtedly lead to suffering. In fact, Judas dies in battle, but his death inspires many to hold fast to the covenant. While it is not beyond the realm of possibility, it is more likely that what we will suffer for being true to Christ is not death, but ridicule.

(Continued Fr. Adam’s Corner) We may also suffer fines and even imprisonment, as more laws will be proposed that make standing against or speaking out against immoral behavior, such as so called same sex marriage, a “hate crime’. In these times we need to always remember, that such suffering does not end in our defeat, but in a greater share of Christ’s victory. Like Judas Maccabeus our suffering, our fidelity and our well-reasoned defense of our faith will inspire others to hold fast to the true faith.
Peace Fr. Adam
