    West Nile Virus?West Nile Virus (WNV) is a mosquito-

    borne virus that can cause disease inhumans, birds, horses, domestic and

    wild animals.

    The WNV virus wasfirst isolated in the

    Is WNV Dangerous?

    West Nile Virus is now the most prevalentmosquito-borne disease in the United

    States.

    How does it happen?

    The cycle begins when an uninfected female

    mosquito bites an infected bird during theperiod (1 to 5 days) that the virus is circulated in

    the blood.

    Will I Be Infected?

    The majority of

    infected individuals

    fail to produce a fullset of signs and

    symptoms. This is

    referred to as aninapparent

    infection.

    How Long Do Symptoms

    Last?These symptoms can last two to three

    weeks with an uneventful recovery or the

    disease progressing to involve the centralnervous system (CNS) resulting in severe

    disease in roughly 1% of cases:
